"CSI 109: Outward Trajectory"

[11] In fact, it was originally a closet.

[34] This part of the preliminary report turns out to be wrong, but hey, that's why they call them preliminary.

[71] On the CSI episode that serves as the pilot for CSI: Miami, Catherine initially doesn't seem to know what to make of Horatio at all, but by about halfway through the episode they're sort of semi-antagonistically flirting. It's rather a shame they've never met again; the only crossovers the Miami show has done since then have been with CSI: NY.

[218] Catherine actually kind of likes the lady in question - Captain Heather Kessler (otherwise known as Lady Heather), commander of the Hellfire Club's rather ostentatious pleasure zeppelin, the George and Vulture - but she does find it annoying that Grissom, of all people, has a VIP pass to said zeppelin.

[348] Go! Mighty Orbots! They're joining together to fight for what's right everywhere. Mighty Orbots! Protecting the Sphere from the shadow of evil and doom...

[441] To implant myomer muscle augmentation fibers in the slow-twitch muscles, but presumably Nick hasn't read the Project SPARTAN-II specification document.

[454] The UF version of the Master Chief would be played by Daniel Craig.

[570] In the real world, M1911-type pistols sometimes develop this unfortunate habit thanks to wear. It goes a little beyond simply being modified to be full-auto; in fact, what happens is that after the first shot, the hammer won't stay cocked and follows the slide back into battery. The result is a weapon that's not merely full-auto, but cannot be stopped until it runs out of ammunition. So it's not simply a matter of Dawson taking his finger off the trigger. Presumably he tried that and it didn't help, contributing to his loss of control of the weapon.

[786] Some men are like a rock; Agent Depew prefers to be like a gazebo.

[829] Actually there's only one Dantrovian holiday that involves fudge sauce: the aptly-named Festival of the Fudge Sauce, which commemorates an early-colonial-period tanker crash which the natives found quite entertaining. The punch line to any Dantrovian's explanation of the holiday to an offworlder is, "It wasn't until years later that we found out what it was really for!"

[830] Sara must have heard about the previous year's Terzayyl observance from somebody who went along. Valera in DNA, maybe.

[985] "When do you sleep, 007?" "Never on the firm's time, sir." Dr. No, 1962.

[1070] I think this is the first time Enrique's name has appeared in an actual CSI story; before this, he was named only in an Avalon 17 program listing blurb on the Forum.

[1105] During production, Chad noted that, until the giant ants appear on the scene, Them! is practically a CSI story anyway. Also, by an amusing coincidence, the protagonist of Them! is a cop named Peterson.

[1130] All beetles hate ants. They're the insect world's Nazis.

[1170] As the old Canadian Broadcasting joke goes, everything is half an hour later in Newfoundland.

[1326] You'd be surprised how helpful it is, in certain circles, to be able to answer the question "What is best in life?" in Klingonese.

[1358] Speed's chronic inability to keep things tidy was a running theme in the first two seasons of CSI: Miami. His kit was always disorganized (and usually out of something important), his CrimeLite always needed charging, and his gun was always filthy. In the third-season premiere, "Lost Son", that last item finally got him killed.

[1368] We don't actually see Sofia Curtis in this episode, just hear about her. This was mainly because the cast was already getting a little unwieldy, and the "Ecklie loyalist" angle was already being covered by Speed.

[1505] A pride of lions; a pack of hyenas; a murder of crows; a spatter of criminalists.

[1537] Warrick's actually talking about his own major screw-up, which involved leaving a newbie at a crime scene while he went off to place a sports bet for a senior judge as part of a barter exchange for a search warrant. Not only did he foul up the bet itself, the newbie got capped while he was out hunting for his bookie. Not exactly Mr. Brown's finest hour.

[1545] Warrick's guessing... but he's right.

[1600] Gryphon's new Bentley is grey partly as a nod to James Bond, who drives a grey Bentley in Ian Fleming's early novels, and partly because, unlike British Racing Green, grey looks good with a grey interior.

[1624] This, by the way, is true, and the Flying Dutchman, "animal style", and "protein style" are really in the computer at In-n-Out.

[1652] These items, on the other hand, are only to be found at the In-n-Outs in New Avalon, particularly the Satriani Avenue store, which happens to be closest to the headquarters of both the NAPD and the IPO. Other items on the really secret menu include the Mad Monk (a fresh magazine of ammunition for a Jackal automatic pistol), the Florence Nightingale (a Miraculon slap patch), and the Joe Friday with Extra Hots (a .38-caliber snub-nosed revolver loaded with unusually powerful rounds).

[1682] The best visual effect for the following fight is this: view it as if Geoff is moving at what appears to be a normal speed... and the Black Hoods are moving at about quarter to half speed. Also, he probably could have handled the Hoods without activating the Daodan, but it would have taken a lot more time and risked a lot more damage to the restaurant as well as possible casualties. GD

[1922] Not a burglary, mind you, a robbery. The bank was open.

[2225] Like Jamie Hyneman, Gil Grissom has been many things in his life. Unlike Jamie, he prefers not to discuss many of them. The notion that he's a semi-renegade Jedi Knight has been kicking around the studio pretty much since "Locard's Exchange", when, by sheer luck, I happened to make one of his lines to Geoff vague enough ("I don't want to draw my weapon," not "I don't want to draw my firearm") that the whole thing started to fall into place. This also helps to explain where he was coming from when he was trying to talk to Sara about her future in "Upward Mobility". No doubt she's wondering where he gets off pontificating about the difficulty of keeping one's "special abilities" out of the way when working as a criminalist... well, now we know (though Sara still doesn't).

[2255] The day-shift coroners: Dr. Alexx Woods from CSI:Miami and Dr. Sam Fujiyama, former protégé of the legendary, now-retired Dr. R. Quincy (Avalon County's medical examiner in the days before the IPO took over those functions from the county).

[2270] Corrigan Gardens (named for the late Jim Corrigan, of The Spectre fame) is the city's municipal cemetery, the so-called potter's field, where those who are buried on the city's nickel wind up. This includes a good many criminals who unsuccessfully resisted arrest. The joke around town is that Corrigan Gardens "residents" get a 3-by-3-by-8 grave and a 55-gallon coffin, but this is not actually true.

[2295] The Bertillon system was a forensic identification system that was a precursor to fingerprinting, and involved a complex series of body measurements based on the idea that no two people have exactly the same proportions as regards arm length, leg length, neck size, etc. Nowadays we'd call it a form of biometrics, and as that field expands, Bertillon is coming back into fashion - not as a method of criminal identification, as it's rather too cumbersome for that, but as a way of verifying the identities of people in security situations.

[2333] Washoe Colony (or just Washoe), a desert planet, is best-known for its capital city, New Las Vegas, which is just about what you would expect. ("Washoe" is an earlier name for what is now Nevada, if you didn't know.)

[2513] Not a case we've seen here (its mention is in the same vein as those never-seen cases of Sherlock Holmes's that Dr. Watson used to mention offhandedly in his narration), but akin to that seen in the CSI episode "Blood Drops".

[2567] If nothing else, his health insurance is probably better than hers.

Heh. And here I was assuming that it was a reference to Schrodinger's cat.

On other notes, some of the later scenes feel... different. As if you re wrote them slightly to better convey what you'd originally intended; such as now its much clearer just what Enrique's status is. And I'm fairly sure the quip about leaving nick's stuff at Allison's wasn't there the first time around either. Makes a great piece even better.

Of COURSE you wernt expecting it!

Nope; 109 hasn't been significantly altered (I may have fixed a typo here and there, I don't recall offhand) since it was released.

I still think it should be Stallone, but even when I was with the studio, I was outvoted. Ah well.

Not really (surprised, I mean). It's a very Klingon question and (traditional) answer; they've always had a lot of Mongol influence, going back to the TOS makeup.

HEE.
