"So you're wondering..."

... about our roughly-monthly three-to-five-day outages, eh?

Well, so are we.

Basically what it boils down to is that Zoner's DSL provider - or possibly his DSL provider's DSL provider, since all of this stuff has two or three levels of resale in Massachusetts - is crap. The link goes down and either it won't come back up because a port on the vendor end needs to be cycled and they won't do it for several days because they're unwilling to bounce the other customers on that set of ports, or it won't come back up because the device on Zoner's end isn't self-correcting and needs to be power cycled, and naturally the outage happened while Zoner was on the plane outbound for a several-day trip to California.

Either way, as the saying goes, is bad for Zathras.

We're looking at other options, but they all have drawbacks that have the potential to be just as irritating for us on the administrative side, if not necessarily for outside users. One costs money (no, don't offer, we've had the I-can't-accept-money-for-this debate before, but thank you), another involves moving to a shared-hosting situation that means less direct access from our side... it's a mess.

Anyway, we're back up for the moment, until the next time something goes wrong. If we get set to actually make any major alterations that we know will cause downtime (wouldn't that be a refreshing change!), we'll be sure and warn you in advance.

Thanks for your patience. Assuming the line stays up, there will be new UF tomorrow - er, later today... Wednesday, anyway. Prelude in A Minor, the first part of Symphony No. 5, is in final review.
