"Annotations: A Certain Obligation"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-14-08 AT 11:21 AM (EDT)

[9] Every greasy spoon in the universe has a cook named 'Solly', 'Charlie' or 'Stu'. I am convinced of this after many years of diner eating.

[23] He's not a Lensman, and they need some kind of ID that's at least harder to forge. Thumbprint ID at least means you can't use a stolen one.

[38] There are worse fetishes to have. For instance, a man could have a thing for Althenian nuns. That would be awkward. --G.

[53] Amusingly, this discontinuity in spelling "equalizer" is Stuart Copeland's (or his record label's), not ours. --G.

[67] Zardon is the cutting edge of both nonlethal and lethal antipersonnel weaponry in a lot of ways.

[115] One of his hallmarks is the obsessive attention to detail that he has - when you are an assassin, it's a job skill; when you're hunting down your employers from when you were an assassin, it's a life skill.

[135] I asked Marty to write his own dialogue for this. He graciously consented.

[139] juuuust a little.

[172] as noted in the picture we used in the BPGD file, this is more movie Daredevil.

[202] "If it's good enough for the Batman..."

[236] NeuBonn Cybernetic Limbs makes a line of 'oversized' limbs based on landmate/battlemover designs. The people who have them tend to need a lot of muscle and bone work just to carry them around, and more than a few have them on pop-off mounts so they can wear 'normal' ones when they're not going to the chromeboi bar to show off.

[246] It is, perhaps, worth noting that - in the UF universe, at least - Thanagarian cops wear body armor. As opposed to bondage gear. --G.

[249] Considering the Thanagarian tendency towards isolationism, the image of someone in hawk-cop gear is rare across the galaxy.

[286] Named after, predictably, Gene Colan and Frank Miller, two artists who did a great deal of work on the Daredevil comic.

[319] Offscreen, since Geoff was still technically 'on probation' with Kurt and Peter as his watchers, the fact he didn't call Kurt after filing the report meant Kurt had to come and look for him.

[324] 442/N New Contact, Armorer's Special Equipment Review, 9923/A Contact Review (I Was Talking With Someone...) and 9923/B Contact Incident Review (...And Then A Fight Broke Out), respectively.

[328] The IPO has many forms at the field-agent level, though most are fairly short and a good percentage are somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Other examples include Form 2283, I Didn't Hit It That Hard, It Must've Had a Self-Destruct (a form inherited from the Golden Age 3WA), and Form 6197, It Really Was the Red Wire. My favorite is Form 497, We're Going to Need a Bigger Boat. --G.

[328] There's also Form 2323, Insurance Just Doesn't Cover This, another inheritee from the Golden Age 3WA.

[411] Logan is pretty good at this stuff by now.

[434] This entire joke was meant to explain why Geoff didn't show up in anything else related to the Duelists that happened between 'Locard's Exchange' and this story. (Besides, the ninjas needed beating.)

[458] "Excellent. Someone knows how to properly review equipment." is the Armorer's usual line. (Yes, that's 'pleased' for him.)

[485] Bruno is patterned after the Huge Butler Guy from Dirty Pair: Project Eden, but isn't him. Maybe he's a clone? I mean, lots of people might want a strapping huge butler who's also good at combat.

[501] He's not that subtle, really.

[552] Just how this happened did get explained eventually.

[603] Unfortunately, Bruce Wayne doesn't give classes in this - Warren would have loved a tutor in that art.

[626] I had to. Mostly because it let me get in the bit about Logan's costume, and also allow me to visualize that moment in Geoff's eyes of realizing the damn video game even warned him about this stuff.

[626] Not to be confused with Madman Omar's House of Entertainment, which is in Salutown. --G.

[701] He's still not good at the idea of working with someone, or the idea of someone seeing him be wrong. In this case, his pride...

[707] Kaiser Island is named for the American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser (1882-1967), whose California shipyard became famous during World War II for building Liberty ships with jaw-dropping speed. --G.

[729] ...literally goeth before a fall.

[755] no, no, no, no taunting happy fun cyborg. Really, he's stupid here.

[785] says the master of unauthorized solo operations...

[792] Gryph and I spent a bunch of time working out some of the Ignatine maneuvers.

[861] being a master of probabilities doesn't mean they'll all work out perfectly. Random chance can bite you hard.

[925] I borrowed this from 'Hopelessly Lost'. I admit it.

[945] Not that your everyday pair of patrolling NAPD radio car cops could handle this situation. They'd probably call in the IPO, or at the very least an ESWAT squad. --G.

[1008] I don't remember now whose idea it was to bring Diana in here; I just remember we spent a while sitting around the lab going, "Okay, well, clearly someone is going to have to come bail these guys out." --G.

[1008] An earlier draft of this had it be Deadpool, resulting in everyone going, “Deadpool?!”. Because that’s what you do when Deadpool shows up. Then we decided we wanted Deadpool in a far bigger fight, and so we got to use this in ‘Thankless’ from the 2-in-1.

[1009] And the winner of this story's 'stupidest line' goes here, I think. Diana wouldn't have been nearly so brutal if she hand't been called 'girl'.

[1042] Those of you who have played City of Heroes may recognize this guy's predicament - he missed (Deflected!) and now he's stuck waiting for the Flurry animation to finish. --G.

[1055] This guy looks like, but probably isn't, the KGBeast of Batman comics fame. --G.

[1095] Geoff is closer than he thinks, of course; Antiope is Diana's aunt, the sister of her mother Hippolyte, Queen of the Amazons. --G.

[1139] I remember Gryph saying to me, "are you TRYING to beat Gryphon in the 'worst injuries' sweepstakes, because I think you just managed to do it in one."

[1209] Charles had the responsibility to offer that under New Avalon law; BJ cut him off before he could say 'However, Dr. Hunnicutt has a possibility you should hear first.' Charles Emerson Winchester is an excellent trauma surgeon and takes it as an affront when he loses a patient; he hates the fact that he has to mention that to people who are so critically injured. He, like his fictional counterpart, is far more complex than you see at first, and I hope to get to use him again. Maybe I can talk Gryph into letting him go on the next summer tour. (He's a tremendous fan of the Art of Noise.)

[1305] In his defence, wouldn't you be a little surprised?

[1373] After this, one of the signature images of Geoff using the Daodan is his hair growing out. No one's figured out why that really happens yet, but it does give something besides the purple glow. Also, it appears to be mostly the back and sides of his head, thus granting him something that someone will eventually call the 'daodan mullet'.

[1380] We really need to meet up with the UF Victor Creed, who is considerably less unpleasant than his Marvel counterpart.

[1404] Though Gryphon knows that Diana is a princess of the Amazons of Themyscira, he presumably isn't aware that she was actually made of clay and given life by the gods, not born and raised like a normal person. --G.

[1483] I really enjoyed writing this. Partridge comes up as a very crusty man, which he is, really. It also gives us a hint as to someone we'll meet later, a mention that drove a lot of speculation and had me cackling at the guesses.

[1514] We now know he's talking about R.D (R. Dorothy Wayneright, Mk 1), now known as Sister Mary Destiny. --G.

[1610] The Lost City of Kolkular is a mythic lost city on Cybertron, purportedly the original capital of the Decepticons before their move to Vilnacron during the Third Cybertronian War. --G.

[1683] "Roger?" "Yeah?" "Grab the cat." From the third 'Lethal Weapon' movie. There were a couple times in this I had something I wasn't sure about, and one or another of the suspects pointed out a way I could do it better; a couple of them would have gratuitously mucked up the entire story if I hadn't fixed them, imploding it like a building. In the referenced scene, Riggs screws up defusing a bomb, and tells Murtaugh to grab the cat that was nearby as they run like all hell to get out before it explodes.

As I recall, I was one of the guessers.

(I still like the idea of Leeloo as an Ignatine... :) )

Indeed! The full list speculated was:

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
Alice, from Resident Evil
Kyra, from Riddick
Aurra Sing, from Ep II
Asajj Ventress, from Clone Wars
Mathilda, from the Professional.
Leeloo Minai Lekararibaba-Laminai-Tchaii Ekbat D Sebat, from Fifth Element
Rally Vincent, Gunsmith Cats
Mirelle Bouquet, Noir
Kirika Yuumura, Noir

It's mentioned somewhere tht Mirelle and Kirika are actually WWWA agents. The rest haven't been seen anywhere.

Mention has been made in a couple of BPGD files of another member of the Croft clan, the late Derek J. Croft (first Earl Langley-Croft), who was a 21st-century explorer. Whether Lara was his mother in the UF universe is unknown at this time. We do know he had a descendent named Lara - she's mentioned in Indiana Jones's BPGD file - but not whether she was named for a 20th-century one.
