Because he generally prefers to drive large, comfortable cars that look, handle and reach 60 in the same time as a wheeled coal barge. Oh, and he gets lost. A lot. --- "Together we will build an empire of a million shining suns." -- Dave, Dictator of Utopia. |

As of S16E1 he has been given the Ariel Atom V8 500. You remember the car that caused Jezza's epiglottis to become full of bees? That had 275bhp. The new model has 500bhp. And they gave it to James. It's mostly schtick. In the Top Gear family, James is the middle child - consistently bullied by the eldest (Jeremy) and harassed by the youngest (Richard). He's portrayed as the slowest driver of the three because he's the most deliberate, and because he does have a poor sense of direction, which often causes him to be late for rendezvous - but it has been shown on a number of occasions, such as their three-supercar road trip to the Millau Viaduct in France, that under the right conditions he can, in fact, drive like hell. He just doesn't do so at the drop of a hat, whether the conditions are really right for it or not, like the other three. This tradition is continued in UF by moments like the one in The Most Outrageous Top Gear Episode in the World... Ever when he's the one who takes the Jet Car to the 8th dimension, and the "Honorless dogs! Make way for Captain Slow!" moment in Road Film with Fighting. Basically, James takes the view that traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. I've been told that he's been to a well-respected performance driving school at some point... and was considered a pretty good student. Sometimes you become quite deliberate when you can basically EAT 90% of the drivers out there in a contest. As for the occasional races, I get the impression that, even normally, hard competition just doesn't actually excite him when he's directly involved.

Sir Jackie Stewart, who as Hammond says is a very wise woman, noted that of the three, May was the one he thought not only was the best driver. It should also be noted that he was, in may of 2009, one of the highest-flying people in the world, and certainly one of the highest flying civilians, having travelled to the edge of space in a U-2. And, he has excellent taste in real, proper, brown beer. To wit, London Pride. ...! Stoke Mandeville, Esq & The Victorian Ballsmiths "Nobody Want Verdigris- Covered Balls!" |
