"Manhunt 01"

[12] The Strenuus system is one of the explorable systems in the galaxy of the computer RPG Mass Effect. As the location note here reflects, it's in the Horse Head Nebula (referred to here by its Index Category of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars designation, because presumably it looks nothing like a horse's head from Salusia). Its one planet capable of supporting a landing, Xawin, is indeed a frozen nowhere with a thin ethane atmosphere, and there is indeed a pirate base on it. No crashed Federation starship, though.

[76] This track by the Who was Chad Collier's pick for the CSI: New Avalon opening theme, but got edged by "Who Are You" because, at the time, the New Avalon series was a straight-up riff on the original CSI. It gets its day in court (so to speak) here instead.

[99] In the Halo games, ODSTs are the semi-elite (not as elite as SPARTANs, obviously) ground troops of the United Nations Marines. Since the SPARTANs are/were Salusian troops in the UF universe, it made sense for the ODSTs to be a Salusian institution as well.

[124] As we'll see as the series progresses, at this point in the UF universe's Starfleet is still using the style established in the original Star Trek television series, in which the starships' markings were in a considerably narrower font than the Bold Extended (and red-outlined) variant of Microgramma used on the ships in the movies.

[147] 30 years later, Major Jaleen Orman would be the commander of the ODST detachment aboard the Imperial Salusian Guards battleship HMS Illustrious, and would lead the ISG component of the surface assault force in the IPO operation to liberate Tau Ceti IV (Operation TRIDENT).

[157] In that same engagement, Captain Sir Doren Soandso would command Illustrious, having been elevated to the peerage and transferred to the Guards at some point in the interim. From Major Orman's presence on his Guards ship, we can infer that Captain Soandso has tried to keep some of his key people with him throughout his career, a common practice among command officers in the Salusian service.

[263] Another indication of the difference in starship technology bases and styles: Lt. Adaji is expecting the interior of the Invincible to look like the Enterprise on the original series, and it doesn't; it looks like the Enterprise in Star Trek VI.

[256] Dau'kar is a Cheltarese word of quite antique origin. It has no direct translation into English, but is essentially something one says when suddenly and unexpectedly confronted with violent death. From this and its phonetic base, one expects it evolved from the ancient Padishah word sardaukar, which was (among other things) the name of the force of elite soldiers of that empire who were garrisoned and trained on ancient Salusia before the indigenous people rose up and drove them from the planet. The word also exists (and means much the same thing) in most other Salusian dialects, which leads linguists to believe it traces all the way back to Proto-Salese.

[296] Here's that historical out-of-phaseness again, though there's one difference: In the UF universe, Starfleet has already standardized its logo (or perhaps it always had). Were the UF Starfleet completely in the TOS style, Lt. Adaji would recognize the arrowhead as the symbol of USS Enterprise, not Starfleet as a whole (as that didn't happen until the movies).

I know this stuff so you don't have to. :)

[301] Named for the U.S. Navy frigate that appears in The Hunt for Red October (or Red Storm Rising, if you prefer a print reference, but Red October is a film much beloved of the staff around here, and that's what was primarily in my mind).

[321] 211, actually, but again, that's because she's basing her calculations on the crew complement of a TOS-era Connie. (No, I don't know what those extra two people do on the later-model ships. :)

[376] "Scopes" is a common nickname for a Salusian warship's sensor operator, akin to 18th-century English men-of-war's officers calling the ship's carpenter "Chips".

[422] To prevent the plaque from becoming a trophy for a victorious enemy or random scavenger. A bit like Roman legions' particularness about their eagles.

[521] Though highly nonstandard, this was an authorized modification, as was the computer core. Story-wise, it was mainly done because if Eight-Ball One had been in the shuttlebay, it'd have been blown to bits.

[659] "Yes! I mean I think so... "

[700] Actually he's quite a bit older than that, but he doesn't look his age.

[743] We get a pretty good look at why in Star Trek: Insurrection.

[771] The Grizzly was the model of APC in use before the Mako in the Mass Effect universe; one can occasionally see them parked outside buildings in the game world. It's here because the Mako was established as the current frontline Salusian APC in The Fulcrum of Fate.

[789] From the cult post-apocalyptic sci-fi film Damnation Alley, made an Ares Corporation product here because of its similarity in style and name to the Ares Citymaster riot control vehicle (from Shadowrun).

[948] Also known as the Stormtrooper Transport (TRN) in the old TIE Fighter computer game.
