"RIP Dwayne McDuffie"

Surprised none of our people here with a more direct connection to the Comics Thing hasn't mentioned this already, but in case you hadn't heard: Dwayne McDuffie, one of the relatively few writers in comics today who wasn't completely batshit insane and/or taking more hallucinogens than a traveling funk band, has died. Among quite a lot else, you may know him as the head writer on Justice League Unlimited, the cartoon series that made it OK to like the Justice League again after Identity Crisis. It was kind of his dharma to have that kind of effect on the world of comics, I think.

Obviously, this is in Source Material because the way superheroes are handled in the UF universe has a lot to do with JLU, and the overall way the WB Animation side of the house counterweighted all the crap going down in DiDio/Johns-land, much of which was owed to the guiding hand of McDuffie.

Ta-Nehisi Coates has a good post of McDuffie here including a link from McDuffie on his greatest fan and a eulogy from another fan. I suspect that the CW don't know his work because Bruce Timm is seen as the JLA/JLU guiding light, and Static (or Static Shock as his, alas, brief and way too cool WB reincarnation called him) didn't get much face time. Plus the subpop that actually followed Icon is, um, how to say this, probably underrepresented on this site. I include myself as part of the igorant.

I wish I'd known that I knew his work before his death.
