""What's New" RSS update"
|
We have what looks to be a working script for generating an RSS feed of the What's New page. Not much point in actually going live with it until the next time said page gets updated, but I thought you might like to know we have, in fact, got a tool for it now. Props to Dave "donnerjack" Lawson, Slarti's co-worker and member of the Ardie Extended Competence Search Network, for doing the legwork. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >>and >>we're doing work for you, > >I distinctly recall offering to do it. Yes, and we also had the generous offer from Dave, whom we know and trust (I've had drinks with him, for example, as has Ardaniel - in fact, at the same event), as opposed to someone who we know as J. Random Guy On Forum. Forgive us for using a trust metric ('righteous dude who does sterling work' vs 'guy on webforum who occationally gets dickish') to decide who we would work with on this. If that's not what you like, here's your coat, I'm sure you can find the door. And before you decide to go 'I'm this guy whose done work on a Linux distro', you should understand: I don't pay that much attention to such things; the only way to impress me would be by saying 'I'm Linus Torvalds'. -- Geoff Depew - Darth Mephron Haberdasher to Androids, Dark Lord of Sith Tech Support. Forgive us for using a trust metric ('righteous >dude who does sterling work' vs 'guy on webforum who occationally gets >dickish') to decide who we would work with on this. I'm not particularly bothered by this, I'm just saying that if I offer to do it, and you don't take me up on it, and then I make a comment about what has been done that is not glowing praise, you can't really turn around and demand that I worship you because "you're doing work for me". While I don't begrudge you your choice, I am not responsible for it. Frankly, I find it quite disturbing that a person cannot make a simple observation without being called names for... what? I really do not see how anybody could take offence at a simple statement of a reason why something might be done.
But I withdraw my offer of assistance. I would not want to work with such aggressive, hostile people. And in future, I will refrain from reporting suggestions or bugs that I find to this project, since so far as I can tell all statements that suggest less than perfection are verboten. |

>so far as I can tell all statements that suggest less than perfection are >verboten. ... Yeah, actually, you know what? If you can't tell the difference between friendly (and useful) criticism and the snottily superior "A-ha! You guys fucked up and I caught you!" tone you customarily strike around here... ... well, I find it impossible to believe that anyone cognizant enough to operate a computer wouldn't be, leaving me to conclude that you do it on purpose, and quite frankly, I can do without your brand of troll around here. Just for your records, you're only the third user I've had to toss out of here since these boards went live. Prosit! --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Frankly, I find it quite disturbing that a person cannot make a simple >observation without being called names for... what? I really do not >see how anybody could take offence at a simple statement of a reason >why something might be done. We stated a timeframe for when it would go active; your comment seemed to come off as more than a little snotty. Then you said that you had offered, and I noted that for us, we'd prefer someone with a known-good trust metric (and 'Slarti knows where he lives and can whack him with a stick' helps raise that trust metric). >But I withdraw my offer of assistance. I would not want to work with >such aggressive, hostile people. And in future, I will refrain from >reporting suggestions or bugs that I find to this project, since so >far as I can tell all statements that suggest less than perfection are >verboten. Actually, no, they are not verboten, because all software has bugs. But a little bit more politeness, instead of what is easily interpreted, in a totally text medium, as whining and snottiness, is not something to regret. This is not me being aggressive and hostile; I can get waaaaay worse than this. You may want to remember that we've had more than a few 'suggestions' from people who drove us a little batshit. (Check the NXE forum for the most recent exempla of cerebral dysrhythmia we've been forced to deal with, should you need a reminder.) Can you, perhaps, from that, realize that some comments make us just a tad twitchy, especially if they could be easily interpreted as being whiny? -- Geoff Depew - Darth Mephron Haberdasher to Androids, Dark Lord of Sith Tech Support. And, y'know, we'll let you know. Posts like yours, Andrew, are part of the reason we're oftentimes not really thrilled by having a Forum at all. We go and recruit a coder to implement fan suggestion, and we get a faceful of complaint over how *we* choose to run *our* infrastructure. You might imagine that this doesn't really make us receptive to suggestions. Ard Sumhenner that Janice chick Usual Suspect and general menace |

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-08 AT 01:11 PM (EST) >Perhaps you would benefit from learning not to view everything that >was not glowing praise as a complaint. Perhaps you could've *shut up and thanked Dave Lawson* *before you were an asshole.* Perhaps you could've been the least bit graceful in the presence of "we chose someone else to do this project based on our prior relationship with him." Perhaps you could perceive the vast difference between being a *whiny cockbite* and offering "glowing praise." Or perhaps you could just *shut the fuck up.* In case you're wondering why we didn't take you up on your offer. You're an incredible jackass at the dumbest things. (EDIT: Oh, hey, look, you do this everywhere else you go, too: http://www.pledgebank.com/killfileandrew I'm glad I've got friends on the ground with Debian. >http://www.pledgebank.com/killfileandrew I will draw attention to the fact that it failed, and to this comment: >This looks like people with roughly-Christian beliefs attacking a person who told them that he doesn't share their views It was an action motivated by internal political (or religious, depending on your perspective) opponents within the Debian project and it backfired on them. I am unable to disclose the specifics but it was related to my spearheading the opposition to people who wanted to use the project to promote their own beliefs. I would advise caution before associating yourself with those people. Their behaviour was (and I am being as charitable as possible here) despicable. You would be better off with the Psi-Corps. And that is all I will say on the subject. |

*Looks up at all the trolling being done, then just shrugs.* I just read the crazy goodness and only go apeshit over the truly nifty things. Mad thanx to Donerjack, indeed, though. When it goes up I'll be certain to throw in that RSS feed in with all the rest that I use. ^_^ Black Aeronaut Technologies Creative aerospace solutions for the discerning spacer "To the commissary we should go," Yoda declared firmly. Indeed. While it would be nice if it was up before the next story update, I think we can all (Well, most of us) wait until then to get a nice RSS feed. But, a question...what's this about setting up a Pseudo-feed in firefox? This is the first I'm hearing of it, unless you're talking about going through some third party site or new extension...which are way more trouble then they're worth, in my opinion. On a related note, it would be nice (though by no means necessary, or anything) if there were something similar for forum posts...I don't even know if that's possible at *all* though. I'm just sayin' it'd be nice...sorta like world peace, or for a PS3 game that actually makes the system worth buying. Y'know, stuff that will probably never happen, but it'd be nice to have. (Though really, I'm not 100% sure the 360 has any games worth the system price either...The wii has it easy in that respect...lower standards to be 'worth the price of the system'. So far there's been at least a dozen games that I'd buy the system *just to play*...if I didn't already have one. I lucked out nearish launch. And this is waaaayyyy off topic. I'ma stop now.) |

Sorry. :) I'm quite fond of the 360 version of Super Puzzle Fighter, and Lumines Live (despite its dumb price structure), and Crackdown is better than it had any right to be. My housemate is obsessed with the Ace Combat series and makes approving noises about AC6: Fires of Liberation. We still haven't gotten past the awesomeness of Portal in the Orange Box, and Beautiful Katamari is good, but obnoxiously hard (it seems the Katamari series has adopted the Tony Hawk Difficulty Curve). And, of course, Halo. And the ports of Catan and Carcasonne. Ard Sumhenner that Janice chick Usual Suspect and general menace |

>And, of course, Halo. And the ports of Catan and Carcasonne. Gears of War was a good time and still stands as one of the first and few games to actually deliver on the promise of cinematic gaming. The eventual release of N+ and Rez on XBox Live Arcade gnaws at the back of my head. All of that combined with the fact that XBox Live is easily the most well done online service attached to any of the consoles. I've never had anything short of a seamless experience on Live, up to and including the movie download/rental feature. It all just works. True, I've red-ringed a unit, but they sent me a new one inside of a month (and the customer service around it was the best I've ever had, ever), and the three year warranty and the fact that the newer boxes should have less of that problem really does make up for it. I've been a Mac Head for eons, I never thought I'd see the day where I'd willingly stump for a Microsoft product, but there you go.

> >And, of course, Halo. And the ports of Catan and Carcasonne. These. Oh, god, these. Catan is an amazing deal for how cheap it is on XBLA. I also really like Every Extend Extra and the Worms port, because, dude, it's Worms. :D If you have some friends around and a willingness to drop a small brick of money, Rock Band is fantastic as a party game. Marvel:UA is OK, and I really like NHL 2k8, but I tend to be one of the certified Hockey Nuts around here, so YMMV. --------------------------- Hope Rides Alone |

I was actually talking about single games that are worth the price of the system. Wii has several..Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3...but as I said, the bar is rather lower for that, so games that would normally not be contenders for 'buy the system for this game' are on the list. Excite Truck for example, which is racing crack, especially if you use your own soundtrack. Another thing that's keeping me from getting a 360 is the fact that I have a thirty-year-old TV that doesn't even have built-in coaxial cable, let alone anything resembling HD. That cuts one of the major candidates for 'buy the system for this game' out immediately because Capcom are big jerky poopy-heads and completely screwed over standard-def users...Dead Rising. GOD I wanna play that game, but there's no point until I get an HD set 'cause I wouldn't be able to read any of the MISSION CRITICAL text. Poopy-heads. http://www.collectedcurios.com/HTP_003_Dead_Rising.jpg?x Orange Box is on the PC, so I'm not missing anything there...(And I find myself wondering if there's an Aperture Science in the UF-verse..GLaDOS is love, and The Cake Is A Lie.) http://www.collectedcurios.com/HTP_002_Portal.jpg?x Now, Beautiful Katamari...I have the first two games, and LORD do I love me some Katamari. (Na naaaa nanaNA nana na NA nana NA nana naaaa....) Halo 3...waaaaannt. Halo 2 was the first console FPS that I ever played that had controls, out of the box by default, that just *worked*. Though I do get a little annoyed at the vehicle controls sometimes, I admit.. (I've only played the PC version of the original Halo) I haven't seen the list of XBLA games, so I'm not sure which of those I'd consider playing, but the one I DO know of for sure, without an imbecilic pricing structure, is Castlevania: Sympohy of the Night. INSTANT buy. The multiplayer games and sports games, I am *really* not too concerned about...I hate sports games (Closest I like is racing, and that more of the Burnout style than, say, NASCAR), and multiplayer games annoy me...mostly because of John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. But also because I just plain suck when I play against actual human beings. Taken in an aggregate, the 360 has plenty of games that, as a whole, make it worth getting without question. However, with the price of four hundred dollars, and games costing sixty apiece (Canadian money, for what it's worth) GETTING more than one game with the system that isn't a crappy pack-in or game the store is trying desperately to get rid of (They're STILL giving away free copies of Superman Returns with every 360 purchase at Future Shop. I think they should pay *us* to take them) is...problematic. |
