"List of UF stories by publication date?"

I obsessively read all of UF a number of years back.

I'm now in somewhat of a mood to obsessively read all of the bits of UF that've come out since then. However, I'm not patient enough to go through everything and try to figure out which parts of the UF corpus are actually new, and which are old.

Unfortunately, while there's a very nice page listing the various UF stories by their internal chronology, there's nothing that I can find that lists the stories by publication date.

Is this available anywhere? If not, could it be?

Even in my first obsessive reading, I remember running into this problem. For example, I encountered stories with R-Type in them before I read #include R-type -- presumably these stories were written later, but I couldn't derive that.

Thanks for any help people might have...

No. I never bothered to keep track, and now I have no -idea- what bits predate others (except for the four parts of the Core, and the odd story which has a note with a date on). A rough idea could be gained by looking at the copyright dates, but within years there's generally no telling.

Best guess? Try the raac archive. I haven't looked, but I'd imagine that the stories are datestamped for when they were u/l'd to the archive.

Seeing as the current archive was created LONG after most of UF was released...

Hell, even when I still ran it I'd moved it from server to server a couple of times and a lot of stuff all had the same date - the day of the last move.

It looks like those datestamps are clamped at February 28, 1997, as MegaZone mentioned...

However, this *did* inspire me to realize that everything since 1995 can be dated thanks to Google Groups:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=group:rec.arts.anime%2A+insubject:uf&num=100&hl=en&safe=off&scoring=d&filter=0

(Though, oddly, the first few Symphony of the Sword episodes aren't showing up.)

Maybe if Google's project of resurrecting older Usenet archives succeeds, the older UF stories will be dateable this way as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the current RAAC archive isn't the same as the one from back when Zoner was in charge of it, if memory serves. Wasn't c. 1997 when the RAAC was changed over to a team-moderated affair?

My memory from that general timeframe is rather lousy.

This might explain why a bunch of UF stories from the 97-98 timeframe are missing from the RAAC archive.

   Okay.

Since there wasn't one, I did it myself.

http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~lennox/uf-pubs-date.html is a chronological list of the publication dates of all the UF stories, the best I could determine them.

For nineteen stories, I couldn't find any indication of their publication dates. A bunch more of them had their copyright year as their only indicated date. Still, this is a lot better than nothing.

If anyone has any notes or personal files or anything about some of the missing dates, I'd be happy to fill them in.

Also, while I was going through the stories looking for dates, I noticed a few interesting discrepancies between the raac archives and the eyrie-productions.com webpages:

  • Several stories, Twilight 1-5 and Dimension Hopping: Not Quite Home, aren't in the archive. Interestingly, though, Twilight 6 is there. (The various stories written in the past month also aren't there, but that's more understandable. Have they appeared on the group yet?)
  • Leap Years 2 and Hammer Time Book 3 are both listed as Exiles stories on eyrie-productions.com, but appear in the directory The-Golden-Age in the archive.
  • Two non-story works, the WDF Technical Readout and the filk song Gweep, are in the raac archive, but I couldn't find them anywhere on eyrie-productions.com.

I don't know if anyone cares, but these might be worth taking a look at.

I dunno about Gweep, but Gryph has said that the WDF Technical Readout was taken down because it's out of date and not worth the effort to update, or something to that effect.

Also, IIRC, Wilderness is in its own directory, rather than being filed under Golden Age or Exile.

"Gweep" was a UF fanwork, a filk created by, IIRC, Rich "Radman" Anderson. As for the Technical Readout, that's pretty much correct. I'll probably re-do it one of these days, but for the moment I've more important things to do.

Wilderness is all over the dial timeline-wise, but its subdir is filed under the Exile, at least here, because that's where the bulk of the /NOW bits are.

*nods* That I'm aware of. I was referring to how the raac archive files the stories.

Thanks to Phil Moyer's Big Box O' (date-stamped) Printouts, I now have approximate dates for all the stories of UF!

http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~lennox/uf-pubs-date.html is now updated.

Thanks, Phil!
