"SYSTEM MOVE FRIDAY 2008.08.22"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-08 AT 00:41 AM (EDT)

Well, that's that, I think. The switch is flipped, now it's a question of propagation. The Forum may be a bit unstable for a while, until we figure out what the hell it's trying to accomplish behind the scenes. It's a strange old bit of software.

Still, the site itself should be much more stable now.

Mad props to Dave "donnerjack" Lawson for taking point on this move and, in the process, learning far more about DCForum than he ever wanted to know - and for providing the space and the pipe in the first place, of course. :)

Does this mean that the site won't be subject to the "Zoner's out of town" curse any more?

Zoner's relocating to the West Coast, which would've put us in quite a bind.

However, Dave 'donnerjack' Lawson has an actual hosting provider, and stepped up to not only give us space, but to do a lot of the heavy lifting on porting the site over to the 21st century.

(And no, he hasn't seen anything you haven't, so don't pester his ass about spoilers.)

I didn't plan to say anything until it was done, for fear of jinxing the proceedings, but it's all true. Dave (of "wrote the script to make an RSS version of What's New" fame) has been the gracious point man for this whole project.

Another victory for the Ardaniel Competence Outreach Network!

If you actually manage to find a decent replacement, please share. Threading seems to be considered an abomination these days, for some reason, and frankly, pretty much _everything_ I've found generates the same reaction in me: "For the love of God, Montressor!"

It's a sick, sick world when the best thing I can find is PhpBB2 with a mod to add threading....

Not sure if you've been here already, but there's a site on the web the runs demos for a number of CMS and Forum applications. You can login and play with the settings and stuff, see how it looks and if it'll do what you want it to do. I doubt they have everything, but it's a good place to have a look at any rate.

The site is www.opensourcecms.com.

There are two big issues with forum changes:

1) migration of the old to the new
2) preserving the data formatting from the old to the new

Considering the joys of DCForum's excuse for HTML support, the second may be just as hideous a level of work as the first.

Eh, the first is a SMOP. Of course, it may be a SMOP that results in your brain leaking out your ears, although I'd hope that DCF isn't as horrifying internally as PhpBB... Right? Please?

The second... does that imply that DCF doesn't keep the raw posts around, but only the formatted posts? Ewww.

I'm not working on the migration, but the DCF-specific formatting is, uh, special. I fear for the sanity of anyone trying to create a conversion. I can only imagine the database is pretty squamous by now.

If it simplifies matters to get a new forum and lose the old posts, I won't kick. I'm pretty sure I don't have any Ancient Chinese Wisdom, really good jokes, or information on the Perfect Chocolate Chocolate-Chip Cookie anywhere on here.

The big sticky mess comes in to all of the original, story-related material we've released in here. Like, uhhh, the entire Featured Documents conference. Maybe we could leave the old forum up and locked out for access to that stuff, I dunno.

That's a problem for Later, though. Top men, &c. :)

That sounds like the best tactic, if a conversion is done. I mean, it's been determined that making things move from Here to There will be a logistics nightmare on the scale -above- Corwin's wedding, and we don't have any goddesses to help out here in the real world.
