"SYSTEM MOVE FRIDAY 2008.08.22"
|
LAST EDITED ON Aug-23-08 AT 00:41 AM (EDT) Well, that's that, I think. The switch is flipped, now it's a question of propagation. The Forum may be a bit unstable for a while, until we figure out what the hell it's trying to accomplish behind the scenes. It's a strange old bit of software.Still, the site itself should be much more stable now. Mad props to Dave "donnerjack" Lawson for taking point on this move and, in the process, learning far more about DCForum than he ever wanted to know - and for providing the space and the pipe in the first place, of course. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Does this mean that the site won't be subject to the "Zoner's out of >town" curse any more? Zoner's relocating to the West Coast, which would've put us in quite a bind. However, Dave 'donnerjack' Lawson has an actual hosting provider, and stepped up to not only give us space, but to do a lot of the heavy lifting on porting the site over to the 21st century. (And no, he hasn't seen anything you haven't, so don't pester his ass about spoilers.) Ard Collier that Janice chick Usual Suspect and general menace |

>However, Dave 'donnerjack' Lawson has an actual hosting provider, and >stepped up to not only give us space, but to do a lot of the heavy >lifting on porting the site over to the 21st century. I didn't plan to say anything until it was done, for fear of jinxing the proceedings, but it's all true. Dave (of "wrote the script to make an RSS version of What's New" fame) has been the gracious point man for this whole project. Another victory for the Ardaniel Competence Outreach Network! --G. >In the short term, we're just copying the existing Forum setup to the >new server. Once we're confident that we're fully stable and >established in the new environment, we may look at replacing the Forum >itself (as DCF is pretty antiquated at this point), but there are some >pretty significant downsides to that, and I'm not yet convinced that >it'd be worth doing, so I've got nothing concrete to announce on that >front at this time. If you actually manage to find a decent replacement, please share. Threading seems to be considered an abomination these days, for some reason, and frankly, pretty much _everything_ I've found generates the same reaction in me: "For the love of God, Montressor!" It's a sick, sick world when the best thing I can find is PhpBB2 with a mod to add threading.... Shalon Wood |

>If it simplifies matters to get a new forum and lose the old posts, I >won't kick. I'm pretty sure I don't have any Ancient Chinese Wisdom, >really good jokes, or information on the Perfect Chocolate >Chocolate-Chip Cookie anywhere on here. The big sticky mess comes in to all of the original, story-related material we've released in here. Like, uhhh, the entire Featured Documents conference. Maybe we could leave the old forum up and locked out for access to that stuff, I dunno. That's a problem for Later, though. Top men, &c. :)
