"Entr'acte: The Courtship of Princess Dessler: Discussion"

1.0) I like the fact that Devlin doesn't even think about spacefolding for the travel to Gamilon.
1.1)I like the fact that Devlin is kept totally in the dark about it, due to his complete lack of understanding of the Gamilion language.

2.0) Ok, hell, I'm to tired to do a full run through now, but I promise I'll finish it tommorow afternoonish, at the latest. Tommorow morning more likely. But first:

3.0) Devlin is a blip? (Hey! Someone else who read the psi-corps trilogy!) Suddenly his vehmence on being anti-psi corps, and also how much he was pissed at Dr. Harrison for his dismissal of Dorthy, just because of who she was. It also explains why he tries so hard to just kind of blend into the normal freaks. Even if they found out, more then likely they wouldn't care. They don't ask questions who's answers might be painful/problematic to the answeree. And he's more then likely to just blend in. So, does he have a red card? I mean, not a real one, but a fake one? (I'm assuming that it's kinda like immunization records for public schools. You can get in without them, but it requires more paper work.)
3.1) Who is footing his bill at WPI? The underground isn't rich enough, I doubt that he's got the personal cash (Ok, stupid assumption.)
3.2)Ok you bastards, was this planned the whole time?
3.3)I like the scene with him yelling at a drape. Very nifty. I was wondering where he had picked up super-hearing. The psi bit didn't even come into consideration.

I once again am astonished at the continued ability that you fellows(and, if fellowette's should have helped, then fellowette's as well) show, with a cast of mostly unique characters. Whom I've alway's liked a bit more then your fan-fic's, but that's just 'cause I like originality (which you people OOZE)

Nope, I haven't. They call them that on the show too.

Yes, he does.

His family. He has got one...

>3.2)Ok you bastards, was this planned the whole time?

Yup. Well, almost the whole time. I realized it about halfway through Wounded Rose.

Rina Dragonaar, now, she wasn't planned the whole time. She came along when I sent out an open call for a minor character to be the member of Amanda's fighter squadron who was sent to take Devlin from his cabin to the flight deck. That was all she was originally supposed to do...

Really? I hadn't remembered that. Then again, most of the teep stuff on b5 bothered me. It felt like "we need something to fill out the 5th season. I know, teep vs normal war!"

Ah well, I very much recommend it. Bester grows a heart, Garabaldi loses what little of one that he had.

to quote from aQoF: "Come with me, said Amanda again. "You've nowhere else to go, correct? No family gathering, no mysterious errands to the far
corners of this miserable planet."

I kind of assumed that ment that he was an orphan of some sort. Then again, if he was, survivors benifits...duh. Ok, I just didn't think that one the whole way through. Although it still doesn't fit. Him having a family and having nowhere to go that is.

And you wound up with a lover of Amanda's, plus body guard, go-fer and the like. Just out of curiosity, do you ever write up big character plans, and they wind up with a bit part, take an early out on the contract, and leave you with a hole to fill, or do you just get extras that steal scene's, walk on in the middle of closed sets, and the rest of the cast is real bloody good at improv?

(shrug) I haven't seen season 5, either, so it must have been sometime before that.

Which means only that his family isn't having an occasion that would require his presence. I never said they were a close family...

Not that I can think of. Occasionally, characters will get dispossessed or moved around as the plots of stories evolve around them, but I can't think offhand of a case in which the character is the part that's packed up and signed off early.

true 'nuff. So, again, out of curiosity, what does he normally do during holidays?

Yeah, I kinda doubted it, but wanted to check and be sure.

Would it be asking too much info in advance to know what p-level he is? (No, not the purity levels. (Although, it would be kinda fun to know the p-scores of all major characters)) Someday, when I have more time, I'll go through each of the eyrie tales, and assign a p-score to every character in there. Based on events that take place within the stories that is.

Sigh. I always thought those things were stupid as hell... and basing such scores merely on what has been revealed in released text would be highly inaccurate.

Well, the Great G won't tell us, so lets see if we can take some wild guesses! (Hey, it'll kill the time while we wait for the next tasteetreet.)

So.

The major point of evidence, I think, is the scene with the guy in the curtains. It's possible that he decided to come out once he was discovered, but I don't think so.

I think Devlin made him come out. Reached in and latched onto his hindbrain and made him walk.

I've never read the books. It's been forever since I watched the show.

But I don't think even Bester could do that.

Blessed be.

Except for the fact that if he could have done that, then why didn't he keep him from doing a Peter Pan out the window (to quote Tommy Lee Jones)? Devlin was broken up enough about the fact that he thinks he killed the guy anyway just by scanning for him in the first place, never mind the proof of who was behind it keeping him alive might have given.

my immpression was that he tried, but the guy's will to go jump was too strong.
Devlin tried, but couldn't stop the guy. Possibly because the guy was so unbalanced about have a telepath mindtouch him...

I don't want to say what his power level is right now, or whether he has any 'special' powers - but just to put this to rest, no, Devlin didn't puppetteer the guy. He was moving so oddly when he came out from behind the drapes because he was scared out of his tiny little mind.

Ah, the "HOLY FUCK IT'S A BRAIN LEECH!" reaction. Very similar to your "HOLY FUCK THE BODYGUARD'S ARMED AND I'M NOT" reactions in most respects.

Akin to the "Oh, fuck, I didn't kill that guy after all" impulse, which is then followed by the fleeing and the screaming and the girl shooting you in the chesty thing.....

Sensed the guy, without LOS from a couple of yards at least. >= P4. Didn't fugue him to keep him from doing a concrete jack-knife. <= P8, or not well trained. (Which is a good assumption, considering he's self taught, in three years. Even P12's take 5 or so years to learn how to do that.)

All things considered, I'd guess him at a P9-10.

There was a whole episode devoted to it, Sin.

I forget the title offhand, but it involved Bester coming
to the station to search for someone who was running an
"underground railroad" of sorts for blips escaping the Corps.
Early season 3, I think.

Ah, okay. "Epiphanies" was the earliest episode I remember the word 'blip' was used to describe renegade telepaths.

(Which appeared in Season One, but I don't think Natasha and Boris, er Bester used the term 'blip' in that episode...)

Otherwise, I think I need a sedative. That portion was decidedly manic in a most controlled way. Were you going for getting the reader to hold their breath for the entire read, or what? I need to re-read that again sometime when I'm not merging into my 14th hour at work. Cool stuff.

>Well, three cheers for that happy accident. I'm certainly sold. :)

(The scene: Gryphon's office at the Eyrie Productions studio complex in Worcester, previously seen in the meta-continuity segments of NXE Bonus Theater!!)

"Hi, I'm here for the major supporting character role?"

"Um, we haven't got any major supporting character roles open right now. The only role I'm looking for right now is the random Pilot Officer who escorts Devlin to the flight deck."

"Yeah, I know. That's me."

"... Oh."

"Hey, is that my description you're writing there? Scratch that comparison to Azalynn, Chief. I'm short - " (bounce) " - but I ain't petite."

"... Um... Yeah. Look, why don't you wait in the hall? That's really distracting."

"Sorry."

Just another day at Studio 7-G. (Frankly, I think Rina's a runaway from a Fred Perry porn short, looking for more challenging dramatic work. :)

>Otherwise, I think I need a sedative. That portion was decidedly
>manic in a most controlled way. Were you going for getting the reader
>to hold their breath for the entire read, or what?

Not really - I had a concept, so I decided I'd just run with the flow and see how it came out. It started out kind of slow and felt a bit awkward - some creative flows are like shoveling sand and some are like breaking rocks, and Courtship was like breaking rocks for the first few scenes. After I got them to Gamilon, though, things picked up.

While I'm on the subject - the Symphony creative process has been really interesting thus far. A lot of things are developing that I hadn't anticipated... like the fact that it'll take probably five entr'actes, an interlude and an intermezzo to fill the gap between the Fourth and Fifth Movements, despite the fact that that's only four weeks in which nothing of any particular significance happens in the world at large. I can't recall anything like this having happened before; I've digressed from time to time, but usually if I've had an arc plotted, what comes in under it will wait to be backfilled later if the opportunity arises. That's not happening here.

What's happening instead is that the characters are all basically demanding that screen time be given to their development as people outside the context of the main arc as well as within it, before that arc sweeps them up into the next major development Hunted Rose. Hence A Question of Faith, The Courtship of Princess Dessler, Ohtori Academy Spring Semester Blues, and the remaining unfinished bits, whose current working titles are (in chronological order):

  • On the Road, Part 1: Hogtown Rhapsody

  • On the Road, Part 2: The Rose that Blooms in the City of Light

  • Just Like Any Other Wednesday and

  • Interlude at Bancroft Tower in D Minor.

I'm especially fond of Interlude at Bancroft Tower; it was the first piece of the Symphony to be actually completed, since it slammed its way out of my head in a single night while I was supposed to be working on Wounded Rose and, in doing so, completely, pre-retroactively (go figure that) changed the character of what was supposed to be a minor, comedy-oriented subplot in Christmas Rose.

Naturally, as I'm that fond of it, it'll be the last of the things I can actually release. Sigh.

BTW: what (if any) is the comnnection between the Earth Alliance and the Federation (as mentioned in UF4)? Is the EA a member of the Federation? Did the Federation fall apart (it was pretty damn ineffectual as a result of GENOM's military expansions as I recall) and get replaced?

The Earth Alliance is the largest, most powerful single member-state of the United Federation of Planets. The opinion of many other member-states at this point is that the Federation government is, in fact, merely a puppet of Earthdome, an assumption which both the Dome and the Federation hotly deny.

Oooh, interesting. Would that relationship have anything to do with Gryph and Zoner resigning from the WDF?

Oh lord. If the federation is supporting earthdome and it's laws does that mean we could see Noriko enforcing the Psi act?

Not directly. It's not as if the WDF answers to the Federation or the Earth Alliance.

Not unless she left the WDF and joined Starfleet or Earthforce for some unfathomable reason.

Hmm, Maybe I have my galactic organizations screwed up. Who is the current client of the WDF? Aren't they the enforcement arm of one of the galactic assemblies?

Also, is Norkio the head of the WDF? That was my feeling from one of Hammer's stories.

Sort of. The WDF are essentially mercenaries; right now they're under contract to the UFP, but that doesn't make the WDF the Federation's bitch. :) If the Federation's behavior gets too unsavory (and the determination of this is rather arbitrary, since it's made by the WDF Supreme Commander and his or her staff), the contract can be cancelled and the WDF can go do something else. Or even try to topple the Federation government if need be. We did it to Salusia once...

>Also, is Norkio the head of the WDF? That was my feeling from one of

She's Grand Admiral of the WDF Navy, but not Supreme Commander; that, at the "present time", is Field Marshal David Ritchie of the WDF Tactical Corps (formerly Eight-Ball Two).

And of course they wouldn't be inclined to listen very carefully to what a certain former WDF Supreme Commander and his exec had to say on the subject...

:)

My guess is that the reason they haven't done this yet is that:

A: They don't feel things are that drastic yet, and
B: As long as they stay on the inside, as it were, they have ways to influence the situation short of war.

I have a feeling this is going to come to a head sooner rather than later, though.

Oh? Very interesting. Taking into account how the Dome's Psi laws are appearing everywhere, there seems to be some truth behind the rumor.

Darn... I figured Edison was one, but now I don't know who the other might be. John Carter I figured on... Wait a sec. Do you like Heinlein, Gryp? If so, I think I know who the other is.

Not particularly. Some of his early juvenile work (Have Space Suit, Will Travel, for instance) is pleasant, but when he started getting into his Space Jingoist phase, my interest started waning, and by the time he hit his Dirty Old Man in Outer Space phase, I was completely turned off. I haven't even attempted Stranger in a Strange Land.

Since it's not very likely to be important for anything other than background color, I'll just tell you; among Devlin's more distinguished forbears are the 19th-century space explorer John Carter (of Mars fame) and 20th-century occultist Randolph Carter (best known as a dream-questor). I believe real-life archeologist Howard Carter was supposedly a cousin or some such of Randolph's, but I can't remember if that's actually in one of Lovecraft's stories, or if it's an artifact of some post-written Lovecraftian pastiche.

Ah. Then you wouldn't have read "Number of the Beast" which is where the Carter I was thinking of appeared. It's definatly part of his Dirty old man period... by the end of the book everyone has wound up in bed with everyone else.

FYI, I had some seriously f'd-up dreams last night, but in the way that dreams work the only things I've held onto after waking up are Gamilons and gunfights and that whatever the exact content was left me with the distinct impression of "What the hell was -that- all about??" And I specifically did not eat the leftover pepperoni pizza in the fridge right before going to bed, so that wasn't to blame.

Which I suppose is a compliment. :)

Missed a couple of things my first time through this.

>1.1)I like the fact that Devlin is kept totally in the dark about it,
>due to his complete lack of understanding of the Gamilion language.

Oh, it's not complete... it's just not very useful in a military setting. (grin)

>(I'm assuming that it's kinda like
>immunization records for public schools. You can get in without them,
>but it requires more paper work.)

Actually, you can't be a human within the borders of the freaking Earth Alliance without one. If you're psi-active and a citizen, you're in the Corps or you're taking the sleepers. If you're psi-active and not a citizen, you're essentially on probation, reporting your whereabouts and activities to the Corps like some kind of paroled felon. Either way, if you're not active, you need the card to prove to the spotchecks and customs types that you're not, so that they don't thrown down options 1 or 2 on you.

>3.1) Who is footing his bill at WPI? The underground isn't rich
>enough,

You don't actually have to be wealthy to attend WPI. The Institute offers partial or even full scholarships to students who demonstrate sufficient talent and initiative. Kaitlyn has a substantial music scholarship. Utena (well, Zoner) isn't paying full list price for her education because she tested in so well (well enough to skip a grade). Miki (well, Gryphon) is paying almost nothing, since he tested in well enough to skip two grades.

Saionji, on the other hand, is on the "Edward tampers with the Accounting Department's records" payment plan, since he barely got in at all. :)

Thus proving that it wasn't actually theoretical when Edward said "The Admissions Department computer is a total joke. Ein could crack it having the chasing-a-rabbit dream." The Accounting Department probably requires Ein to be awake.

Finally , a story with more Devlin in it .
Since he's my favorite character in the
Symphony(next to Corwin) I was kinda dissapointed
that he got so little screen time (comperatively).

I know this has been said numerous times
before but , what the hell ,
judging by the speed at which the
Symphony's being completed the
muse must've hit Gryphon real hard .

   mmm...tasty story :)
I'll definitely be re-reading this one.

Wow...you know, as much as I never figured Devlin for a blib...it utterly failed to surprise me? Probably soemthing in my mind figuring "well, the group he's in are all weird in one way or anthoer...this must be his" :)

Xenia: oh, another character we love to hate...will we be seeing more of her?

Actually, all the characterization continues to be superb, and very believable.

How is durandel going to react to the phone call Xenia's making (which is almost definitely to the people I think it's too :)? poorly, I would imagine

mmm...pissed off rampant AI, woohoo >:)

and geez! 5 days between releases? you going to be ok, guys? you're writing almost as fast as I can read (assuming my standard 3 reads/part, to pick up all the details)

Oh, is it, now? Is Xenia telling you things she's not telling anyone else?

(And if so, why in heaven's name are you believing her?)

>poorly, I would imagine

Well, right about now, the big D is probably deep into the Angry phase of Rampancy. He'd probably take anything poorly right now. ;)

That fit with what Rijiger had told Xenia about the Earthman's
involvement in her hit squad's failure Saturday night, too. Heard a
noise? Loud enough to wake him? Unlikely... but the high emotions of
Amanda's fight for her life, the deaths of three of her fourattackers...
Yes. Perfect.
Xenia smiled, picked up the telephone built into the desk, and dialed.

Every once in a while, a story will be good enough to get a verbal reponse as I read it. Usually, this is laughter. This time...

Me, grinning, on reading the line beginning "Xenia smiled": Oh F$@K!

Blessed be.

Woah. Two stories in less then a week, and one hell of a big surprise. I knew Devlin was hiding something, but this was a surprise. I should have guessed there was at least one telepath in the WPI group, but it never occured to me.

In regards to Amamda's injuries, how come her replacement eye was so messy? People in the UF universe have gotten new eyes without a mess.

And is Xenia calling who I think she's calling? Psi Corp trouble seems evident for Hunted Rose.

The type of replacement she received is the one Flight Leaders in the Gamilon Navy are entitled to by rank. She could have had something higher-tech (up to and including simply having her natural eye regenerated) because of her position in the royal family, but Amanda dislikes taking things she hasn't earned by merit, and her naval rank reflects her level of actual achievement in life.

(The reason it's behind that Breetai-ish plate is because the optic mount itself for Flight Leaders is pretty icky-looking. Think of that scene in The Terminator where he peels out one of his fake eyes to reveal the robotic one behind it.)

It can be presumed that, as she advances in rank, her optic will advance in sophistication.

   Greetings!

Woah. What a ride!

I for one am glad MY spring breaks were never that exciting.

But, kidding aside, what a piece of work. We're getting more character development, and I'm a sucker for good character development. I get a real kick learning more about the characters I enjoy reading.

And now....

The Highlights

Rina Dragonaar. She took me by suprise, but she fit into the story very well.

Devlin's blushing. I loved the girls reactions in the infirmary. It was a great running gag.

Devlin being a telepath. I suspected it earlier on, especially after his comments on the Psionics Regulation and Protection Act.

The band. (Being Garon, Cora, Rina and Amanda) I keep getting the Daft Punk videos in my head when I think of them performing together.
(If you wanna see what I'm talking about, you can go to toonami.com or animedream.org.)

The two sides of Devlin and Garon. Both keeping up a false front for important reasons.

Amanda's dress at the ball. If I had any doubt that Amanda is Devlin's Rose Bride, this dispelled them for me. :)

Looking forward to Katie's road trip!

Rina took me by surprise, too, but it didn't take me long to get terribly fond of her. :)

Hmm... that's an interesting notion. I hadn't (believe it or not) really thought of it that way, but... hmm. She is a princess... :)

(The similarity in costume was a coincidence too, but now that you make me think about it, the Rose Bride's dress basically is the top of a uniform with a ballgown skirt instead of pants. The buttons are even on the wrong way for a woman's garment, too... )

Whew... First thing of the top of my Head.... I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight, given the adrenaline rush. While I do have the ability to imurse myself in whatever I'm reading (kinda like Mac, only not quite as good as he is) Courtship grabbed me by the throat and drug me along on a breakneck rollercoaster ride that didn't let up even at the end. I, for one, totally missed the small hints earlier, so while Devon's revalation caught me by surprise, it wasn't that much of a surprise. Something along the lines of "He's a Teep? Ok, so that's why he's on the 'watch' list." Of course, that list really is a case of the shadow's agents keeping an eye on Kaitlin's known associates... Something along the lines of Know thine enemy's, and his kids, and their Friends, and their Friends kids.... See the infamous "Evil Overlord" List. You NEVER want to leave ANY of the hero's line intact. It WILL come back to destroy you. ^_^

And indeed, with Xeria's (or however the darn name is spelled) final scene, the second I read it it was "OH >BLEEP<"

I'd have to disagree with one thought, Gryph. You might not have thought that anything earth-shattering was going on during spring break, at least as far as Utena and the whole Save Cephiro thing, but I think that these events are at least as imprtant to what is going on (and the gathering shadows) as the 'alleged' 'main' storyline (assumed) of AoN and Corwin help Utena save Cephiro.

The overal levels of plots within plots within plots also seemed so... right, especially since it was for the most part set on Gamilon. Now, I kept on missing episodes when US aired it as Star Blazers, but I saw enough to know that there was more to Gamilon, and Gamilons, that met the eye.

Well, truth be known, I don't really remember all that much about the canonical Gamilons and Desslok. It's been a few years since I watched Star Blazers last, and when I did I didn't enjoy it very much. (Another childhood icon shattered against the cold, hard stone of adult standards. Turns out Leiji Matsumoto's works annoy the hell out of me. Oh well... )

So when you get right down to it, any resemblance betweeen the UF Gamilons and their canon counterparts can be laid at the doorstep of coincidence, or possibly my subconscious memory.

Heh. I don't remember them that well either, cept that Desslock himself was the one in charge of chasing Yamato. Still, even if I did, I bet I'd prefer your Gamilons to 'the Cannon'.

There is a reason you don't see pre-teen Gamilons. The embarrasing secret they won't tell to outworlders is that larval Gamilons are, in fact, Smurfs.

   >2.0) Ok, hell, I'm to tired to do a full run through now, but I
>promise I'll finish it tommorow afternoonish, at the latest. Tommorow
>morning more likely. But first:

Ok, as previously promised, a more thorough run through, after enough sleep and coffee to make me at least resemble something human.

1.0) So, who's idea was Amanda's callsign? Very apt. Tskia would approve very much, I do belive. ;-)
1.1) Rina's callsign. Also pretty cool, if bland.

2.0) "Do yourself a favor, Carter - if you're ever in the military, do everything you can to avoid being posted to a flagship. They get all the stupidest officers and most boring missions. It sounds big and glamorous, but all you end up doing is flying parade escorts, polishing your blaster and
playing with yourself."

She's interesting all right. Who served time on a carrier? 'Cause a buddy of mine (Former tomcat pilot) said almost the same thing to me when I was listening to old war stories.

2.1)Climate management field. Evil thing to do to someone who's not expecting it, what?
2.2) *twin* helix cannon's? *two* omega class weapons on one ship? Ouchie.
2.3) I like the locker room scene. "Ok, Carter, you're all set," she said."Just remember to close your face sheild if you lose cabin integrity, 'cause no one likes sucking vacuum."

3.0) Lockheed Lightning's? Given Gamilon's general dislike of humans, wouldn't they really dislike using human tech? And even if lockheed is really nifty like, wouldn't they have their own starfighter tech? That was better then EA's?
(Assuming that lockheed doesn't have a Gamilon division, and also assuming that EA enforce's a "You design for us, and us alone" policy)

4.0) Total offshoot, but damnit, would you post a copy of the tech readout in the vault at least? I enjoyed reading it, even if it was out of date.

5.0) New revision of starfury's? (the 71's that is)

6.0) I like the sniping twix Amanda and Xeria. Very sibling-ish.

7.0) She grinned again. "One day, my children will guard yours."
Well, I guess that this answers my questions about what happens to Devlin, what? If he can keep the psi-corps off his back for a few more years anyways.

8.0) "You look dashing," Rina contradicted him. "Spectacular.
It'll help Amanda's mood just looking at you. Just whatever you do
don't smile at her. I don't think she'd be able to stand it. Too
much nervous tension, you know. She's probably going to give you
quite a workout tonight anyway," she added, punching him in the
shoulder. "Danger always makes her horny."

I am finding it interesting that of all the characters (unless you count Gryph, who probably did *something* with kei in the week of CR. But I don't), only azalynn is having sexual interactions with others. This is the closest that *any* of them has gotten to it, and only 'cause Rina's a blunt spoken fighter jock.
8.1) Yeah, yeah. I know. "They're only 15, or less." Still, with all of the romantic tension that's going on, I'm kinda surprised that no one is jumping each other's bones.

9.0) "I'm afraid I'm not very political, Your Majesty. I'm glad I was able to help a friend - nothing more."

Undoubtedly one of the reasons that 'Manda likes Devlin. He could care less about politics. But he'll move heaven and earth to help a friend.

10.0) IHNJ, IJLS "Dim-Witted Upper-Class Twit."
10.1) I very much enjoy Garon's acting ability. Very neat.
10.2) "Actually, she's securing him," said Rina lightly. "That was
my sister Cora."
Devlin raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
Rina grinned and dug him in the ribs with an elbow. "There's
more than one way to interpret our family motto, Carter."

*grin* now there's an evil little woman. I rather like her.

11.0) Would 'Manda's and Carters' kids have a chance at beeing teeps? I mean, I'm not sure on the Genetics behind teeps in the b5 world, except that some teeps, bred to other teeps make more teeps, hence the genetic pairing within psi-corps.
11.1) Or am I doing the whole "Pasha's looking *way* too far into the future with this story" thing again?

12.0) "Oh, indeed," Amanda agreed. "He is quite a pathetic
specimen, isn't he, Kit? Cowardly, spineless, weak and stupid, just
as he claims." The air of light mocking vanished from her voice and
face as she looked Devlin in the eye again and added, "Clearly such a
creature wouldn't hesitate to fling himself headlong into unknown
danger wearing nothing but undershorts and an old coat."

You know, something about Carters air of spinelessness never *quite* rang true. For someone who tried to pretend that he was a coward, he stands up to too many people. Way too many people.

13.0) Xeria deserves to be fed to alt.tasteless for her treatment of Dalin. Devotion to someone else is one of the few things in life that I will never fault someone for. Never rib someone over. And try my damnedest never to take advantage of. And it pisses me off to high hells and low heavens when someone does. And even worse when they do it caullously.

14.0) Thursday, he remembered very little of the aforementioned
conversation, which was just as well, and spent much of the afternoon
regretting having ever decided to become a drummer.

*grin* I've had hangovers like that. (not that I'm a drummer, but my last roommate was.)
14.1) It took me three readings to figure out that Garon was talking about a threesome, *not* him and Carter.

15.0)Why use setting 3 on the ppg? 1 would have stopped the assain, and left him alive for questioning...

16.0)"You have saved my heir twice in the last week, Mr. Carter,"
said Desslok gravely. "Desslok Kuraino Dessler does not forget such
things."

Always good to have goods in high places when you are a fugitive from the law. Let's see now, friends with the head of state of Zeta Cyngi's daughter and son, Semi-declared future son-in-law to the head of Gamilion, *and* co-comlien to the future head of the fleet. Friends with Edward. Friends with someone who can blow Gryph halfway across a good sized backyard. Yeah, I'd like to see a psi-cop fuck with him

17.0) "Watch out for those Void Ghosts on the
Rim, eh, what?"

Worship the comic!

>1.0) So, who's idea was Amanda's callsign? Very apt. Tskia would
>approve very much, I do belive. ;-)

Mine. Just a spur of the moment decision.

>1.1) Rina's callsign. Also pretty cool, if bland.

She didn't really get a chance to demonstrate why she's called that, unless you take the line that she earned it with her wit rather than her gunnery skills. :) (She does handle her blaster really well the one time she gets a chance to use it, but that's not really sniper fire.)

>2.0) "Do yourself a favor, Carter - if you're ever in the

>
>She's interesting all right. Who served time on a carrier?

My uncle Paul, back in the seventies, was a janitor on USS Forrestal, but he never said anything like that. Just an impression I've formed from years of liking navy stories, I guess. :)

>2.2) *twin* helix cannon's? *two* omega class weapons on one ship?

Nah, helix cannons aren't Omega-class. The deck guns of the Argo were helix cannons. They're heavy starship weapons, roughly equivalent to the heavy phasers on a Galaxy-class battleship ("exploratory cruiser" my ass) or the super-heavy blaster mounts on an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. The Destiny's Fist does have an Omega-class weapon, though, a Wave Motion Gun.

>3.0) Lockheed Lightning's? Given Gamilon's general dislike of humans,
>wouldn't they really dislike using human tech? And even if lockheed
>is really nifty like, wouldn't they have their own starfighter tech?

One of the reasons why the Gamilons dislike Earthpeople nowadays is the fact that, after the war (Gamilon had a brief war with Earth back somewhere along there), Gamilon's native military industries pretty much collapsed, and now all of their military hardware is contract-built or bought offworld. They've become galactic citizens, dependent on the galactic economy, and they resent the hell out of it.

My fault; I intended to mention this and forgot to do it.

>4.0) Total offshoot, but damnit, would you post a copy of the tech
>readout in the vault at least? I enjoyed reading it, even if it was
>out of date.

I'd rather not. Even if I put it in the Subterranean Vault, even if I put huge red warnings that it's deprecated and worthless for actual reference purposes, I'll get mail from people anytime I contradict it.

>5.0) New revision of starfury's? (the 71's that is)

No; I just couldn't find the actual number and made one up, hoping that my inability to find one meant that B5 hadn't bothered to give them one. What's the correct one?

>7.0) She grinned again. "One day, my children will guard
>yours."

>Well, I guess that this answers my questions about what happens to
>Devlin, what? If he can keep the psi-corps off his back for a few

At the very least, you now know what Rina believes will become of him. :)

>I am finding it interesting that of all the characters (unless you

[snip]
>8.1) Yeah, yeah. I know. "They're only 15, or less." Still, with all
>of the romantic tension that's going on, I'm kinda surprised that no
>one is jumping each other's bones.

Well, let's see...

(Since you didn't ask... )

- It should be obvious that Devlin and Amanda have been, and continue to be, lovers. They probably don't get all that many opportunities, but theirs is an ongoing affair.

- It should be further apparent that Amanda and Kitarina have also been lovers, though that's been somewhat interrupted by the fact that Amanda's in school on Earth. Still, it's safe to assume that they, as you put it, did something when Amanda was home for her last vacation.

- Garon and Corimel are most definitely lovers.

- It never came up, but Desslok and Grenlo are, too.

- Amanda and Garon haven't yet, but Amanda really, really wants to, and Garon has no particular objection, when the time is right.

- Amanda and Azalynn I choose to leave obscured for the time being, though if the reader wishes to speculate, I direct him to Amanda's dialogue during their confrontation with Liza Broadbank in Duelists.

- Azalynn's latest project is just beginning, but Miki did go back for the third day of Spring Wind, and he'd obviously stayed the night in Riley 212 the night after C-term finals. They didn't necessarily do anything that particular night (tired! finals are hard!), but it's still suggestive. (Besides, "only Azalynn is having sexual interactions with others" is an impossible statement. There has to be at least one somebody else involved for "others" to be true. :)

- Speaking of Azalynn's "others", Saionji isn't "encountering" anybody right now, but he did for a little while, back at Christmastime.

- Kaitlyn has too much baggage to even consider such a thing, except in the most abstract sense, right now. After Christmas Rose, she's finally begun healing, but it'll be some time before she achieves a level of confidence where she's ready to try something like that again.

- The same goes for Juri; she's a mess, one even Azalynn can't untangle right now. She has to sort herself out before she can risk involving herself.

- Utena, well, we know about Utena's situation. She's got stuff to sort out on about four different levels.

- Corwin's freakin' thirteen. (That's one of the levels. :)

- Moose isn't seeing anybody just now. Hoffmanites generally don't scope for non-Hoffmanites; to them, regular people are built unsettlingly like children. Moose might be kind of a perv by Hoffmanite standards, I dunno - but whichever, he's not involved.

- There aren't any other t'skrang at WPI, so T'skaia's on his own. Humanoids do not interest him.

- Mia just got off the boat from Minbar, where she lived a sheltered life among the religious caste (and the Anla'shok, but that's a story for another time). She's not ready for anything like that yet. But she's done a lot of reading...

- I don't know or care if Liza Broadbank is getting any. I can only say that if she is, I hope it isn't with Professor Harris.

- Same goes for Xenia.

- Dorothy... isn't. But she's starting to think about it. That's as far as I want to go with that right now...

There, now. Aren't you glad you didn't ask? (I'm sure I've missed somebody out... I always do... )

The funny thing is, Devlin genuinely does consider himself a physical coward. He hates the thought of being injured or feeling pain - he's terrified by violence and physical conflict. It's just that he can still function while terrified. If you've ever read C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower books, Hornblower has a similar mentality in this regard. He routinely upbraids himself for his cowardice because, while committing acts of such astounding courage that they make battle-hardened sailors' jaws drop, he's scared shitless inside his own mind. :)

Standard issue on B5 is the SA-23. There is also the 23E, which has only 2 guns, wheighs 125kg less, and carries 93Full Burn Seconds of fuel. The Thunderbolts are the 60's.

Bah! That is the true sign of courage. It doesn't take much courage to run into a firefight if you aren't scared. But it does take bunches of spine to do so if you are pissing your pants from fear, but do it anyway's, 'cause it's the right thing to do.

Well, all of the ppg's in B5 have three settings. The first setting kicks like a mule upon impact, and will leave second degree burns under normal clothing. 2nd will leave third degree burns, and usually drop a target in light body armor. 3rd setting will melt through a half inch of ships hull.

Hmm. I don't remember that from the show. Is it canon, or is it from one of the RPG sourcebooks?

Mm. Ok. I still shrug a little, since in many cases JMS has admitted that he considers various publications to be canon in broad strokes, but with the minor details sometimes negotiable. (Which is only fair... it means that if a small detail wasn't on the show and it gets in the way of telling another story later, he can declare it non-canon. As it should be.)

Anyway, I'll leave it to Gryph to decide what's canon for UF. :)

I figure that it was in there to shut the people up about how the same gun would only hurt people some of the time, kill people outright other times, not hurt the background, and yet be able to cut open doors. But it is in the Sec manual.

No need for that. It's still up in the RAAC archive. You'll just need to have an app that can gunzip and tar -x.

I suspect that Pasha means "coimelin", a term from the Pendorian language of Elf Sternberg's "Journal Entries of Kennet R'yal Shardik" series of SF-erotica. "Coimelin", as far as I can gather, seems to refer to one's true love, with the understanding (and assumption) that an individual can have more than one coimelin.

Me, I find polyamory much too messy in the Real World, though it does make for happy fiction.

I need to take my own advice.

Yes it does, tho I'd like to note here that my parents have been practicing such for three or four years now and I, at least, have yet to notice any particular problems arising therefrom.

YMMV.

So true. It depends in a large part on whether or not all the people involved in the relationship *want* to be polyamorous. In my experience, most poly relationships crash and burn because one or more people aren't *Really* poly; they just try to be, because they're in love with someone who is. I have seen poly relationships that work, though, and have lasted for years, so it *is* possible...

That's not polyamory. That's just sleeping with lots of people. Polyamory, as I understand it, is the act of being romantically in love with more than one person at a given time, in a continuous, long-term sort of way.

I can handle sleeping with lots of different people as easily as anyone, though it's not something I choose to do. It's being in love with more than one person, or knowing that the person I love has feelings equally strong (maybe stronger! that's the real fear) for someone else, that really breaks *my* brain, and causes many angstroms of angst.

I've been observing "binding relationships" (not to be confused with bondage) lately. A tight binding relationship is one that is difficult/painful to get out of, and a loose binding relationship is is one that is easy to get out of.

Given that about 50% of marriages in the US end in divorce, I have to suggest that this culture has difficulty with a one-to-one tight binding relationship. I can only guess that adding more people into such a thing would further destablize the relationship. Risky.

It all depends on the people involved. Some would argue that 'open' relationships remove some of the stressors that break up many monogomous relationships.

Personally I think it is just too complex to sum up. I know people who have been in long term poly relationships, 'open marriages', etc, as well as people in the 'classic' monogomous situation. And I don't think any one choice is better than any other overall, it comes down to the people involved and what works for them. I know some of the people in poly relationships would never cope with monogomy, while others would probably do just fine - and some of the monogomous couples would never cope with the new twists being poly brings in.

There is also no such thing as a 'standard' poly relationship, there is quite a lot of variation.

But this is WAY off topic, so if anyone wants to continue this take it to the General forum.

That is most definitely NOT polyamory - that's just group sex.

Say something like that in some circles and you'd be lucky to make it out alive. It REALLY pisses off a lot of polyamorous people when other people treat it like it is just sex, or that just having sex with multiple people makes you poly.

Since I'm not that deep into it I only find it annoying that people have such a drastic misconception of the situation.

Having a menage doesn't make you poly.

I doubt it. They're not well-suited to the WDF's carrier hardware, which is mainly geared toward Veritech fighters and atmosphere-capable fixed-config starfighters. You'd be more likely to find them turning up with the GENOM fleet, if they didn't already make their own highly maneuverable, disconcertingly flimsy space-capable starfighter line.

Hey! Furies aren't disconcertingly flimsy! In fact, they are cabable of taking alot of damage. It's just that there's a lot of power being thrown out of a cruiser class vessel.

Um... oddly, I never actually figured out what they look like. My mental image was more like the F-22 (which should have been called Lightning II), but it wasn't very detailed.

The P-38's is kind of a silly outline for a space fighter to have, but I suppose it could be done. Hmm...

Not being the author, my opinion isn't worth much, but:

Why setting 3? Because Devlin didn't want to waste time changing the setting.

He's carrying it to deal with Psi Cops, after all. From what I've been told, an unregistered telepath caught by the Psi Cops has three major options: Join the Psi Corps, go to prison, or take drugs that are the chemical equivalent of a frontal lobotomy.

Faced with those options, adding assault with a deadly weapon, murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, carrying concealed without a permit, and resisting arrest is chump change.

The Gamilons are a highly militarized society with a lot of emphasis on martial skill. To scan people entering a Gamilon state building for weapons would be like scanning a herd of cattle for flies.

I see. Given that, it makes sense. If they don't scan everyone as a matter of course, they would probably scan only offworlders and suchlike. I can see Devlin, as a personal guest of the Princess, being exempt. Thanks.

Actually, being as it's inside the palace, and very few people even have invitations, they probably just exempted everyone from being scanned. Kinda like how it is in the local legislation. They figure, if everyone is smart, they will understand that pulling a gun in a room filled with several hundred people with guns, and who don't want to be a statistic, is not the smartest thing to do. The only public buildings that have restrictions on carry laws are the libraries, those in Yue county, federal buildings and hospitals. Everywhere else, you can walk in with a gun. If you have a conceal permit, you can carry it concealed. Something like 83% of the state legistlation carries a fire-arm to work, everyday. It's kinda neat.

Neither am I. And Pasha explained already- the vast majority of the people working at the palace are military in some way or another, and thus have at least ceremonial weapons.

Blessed be.

Considering the fact that a large number of the attendes are, or were military, I kinda doubt it. There is also the "what weapon sir?" "Oh, yeah. Must have been an error in the scanner." bit. There are advantages to being a teep.

Being a teep doesn't mean you can do Jedi mind tricks. As evidence in the source material, B5, people tend to know when they are being scanned. Trying to manipulate someone's thoughts takes a LOT of power and skill, to do so without being detected is something I'd expect only a mere handful of teeps can do - and they have had years of practice.

I don't have the encyclopeadic knowledge of B5 that some here do, but the only instance I can recall of someone having reality bent for them and not realizing it was when Lyta and a group of teeps united to fool Bester. And even then it was obvious he thought *something* wasn't quite right, but he just couldn't put his finger on it.

Talia, not Lyta. I remember this episode pretty clearly (unlike so many others watched in the great huge B5 binges in Truss' living room).

True. On the other hand, being a teep does not immediately invite madness and megalomania into your head if you fall to the Dark Side of the Force... Teeps just have to deal with ordinary human problems on an extra scale, instead of suddenly getting a big boost up the existing scales.

Then again, Bester is an incredibly powerful teep. A P12, and has been training for six decades. He's almost 60 in the series, so he has a very good sense of how teep works, and a very strong mind. P8's and up can project what they want to see into a mundanes mind. Or a teeps mind, but a teep can try to resist it.

I have to disagree with this. I also served, but I was a sonar operator, on a cruiser. CGN-41, Uss Arkansas. For 9 months we sailed around doing nothing but looking up Enterprises backside from the plane guard station. Which would have been not so bad except that dispite the fact that Big-E made so much noise she blanked out half my sonar scope but we were still expected to mount a proper sonar watch. This was in 84-85, and we were rotated from the Red Sea to the Med, just after Regain bombed Kadaffi. Our most excitment was HOPING someone would take a shot at us just to warrent all our paranoia. That and combat pay. Ships like Destroyers often get detached for more interesting stuff, but Cruisers, while built to be all purpose ships to an extent, tend to remain with the battle-group to provide AA coverage for the carrier.

Ergo, MY opinion that the WORST assignment is to be on one of the flagship's ESCORTS. All of the boring work, but you're too close to the flag... Captains want to put their best foot forward for the admirals, et all.

I think Redneck pinned down that Fold drives just aren't economically feasible for commercial purposes. He's probably never folded before. Heck that could be the only ship the Gamilons have that CAN Fold, since it seems to be reserved for the big battlewagons.

Third biggest gun in the quadrant. i.e. it's bigger than a Wave Motion gun but smaller that a Reflex Cannon (SDF-23) or Phase Transit Cannon (Concordia). I think every fleet in the quadrant has a severe case of muzzle envy when it comes to the WDF.

Or did they paste some girders on to make it LONGER than a Wave Motion gun.

That would be why I liked it. Internal consistence in the universe, and all that.

*grin* "Gods damnit! How am I supposed to compete with them? They've got both the Guns *and* the Girls."
(And that's Reflex Cannon MkII.)(But, according to the Tech Manual(yes, I know this is what you people hate about it) the Wave Motion Gun is bigger then the Helix. Cannons, so they must have *another* BFG on the ship.)

>Or did they paste some girders on to make it LONGER than a Wave Motion

Well, depends. That might take a *lot* of girders. I mean a WMG is lik 3/4ths the length of a yamato carrier...

The most powerful armament the Destiny's Fist mounts is its wave motion gun, which is slightly more powerful, in terms of total energy output, than the earlier models of the same weapon mounted by the WDF's Yamato-class battleships. "Wave motion gun" is a class of weapon, not a specific model, so outputs vary.

Good point, Gryph. You know, if I were able to make an apperance in UF, that would be the job I'd love to have... CO of one of the Yamato class ships. What can I say? It wasn't exactly my FIRST exposure to anime... Speed Racer was that, but it was the first one I remember being upset about missing episodes over.

Somehow, I can see a Gamilon military contractor telling Desslok, "... and the wave motion cannon is bigger than the Yamato's." and clinching the contract.
