"La Maupin"

This is a slightly abstract "source material", but bear with me, because, well, have a read of this. (Caution: lots of swearing. It's Badass of the Week, that's kind of his métier.)

I link this page because not only is that woman unbelievably awesome in a man-why-have-I-never-heard-of-her-before kind of way, and not only is she (entirely by coincidence, as far as I can recall) a sort of historical prototype for what you might call the Eyrie Productions Woman of the Future, but also, take a good look at that first illustration.

Is that, or is that not, Laura Kinney escaping from a covert capture team on Versailles Prime (The Planet of Living French History)? Plainly she was working as a musician in an Authentic Period Opera House when they attacked, and for some reason (maybe the weather was chilly) stole the bandleader's greatcoat on her way out. :)

She strikes me as Elizabeth Shus'tal's patron saint. :)

"Beautiful, valiant, generous, and supremely unchaste"? Yeah, Liza would probably like that. She can't sing, though. :)

My favorite bit was her joining the nunnery.

After reading each example of her badassitude, I had to mentally add the phrase "like a boss" at the end.

The nunnery bit was by far my favorite part too.

This whole discussion makes me wonder if La Maupin could be in UF today. Einherjar, certainly, but maybe Valkyrie? Maybe Returner? Hm.

... and presumably one of the several reasons why Thor had to crash on Corwin's couch for most of the second half of 2409...

Oh, MY. I would guess inspiration has struck. Woot! I can imagine how this might have happened already, but I will hold off saying anything until the piece is out. =) Looking forward to it!

And because my brain apparently Does Not Like Me, every time I think about this the theme song and accompanying montage from the "Maupin the Third" anime series* starts playing.

*not a real thing. YET.

With a decent writer and artist, La Maupin's life would be an awesome manga and anime series.

"They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on."
