"teaser/frag: GG Book 2 Act IV"

"I think I'm really getting the hang of spell cards," Flandre said excitedly as she buttered some bread. "Hey, big bro, you should try it! I wonder if you could get them to work with that thing you do. And can you teach me that shield spell you use? If you can cast it without a familiar, I bet I could too."

"Flandre, don't badger your brother at the table," said Remilia.

"Well, when else do I see him when he's working on these big projects?" Flandre asked. "It's not fair that Meiling gets him to herself all night."

Meiling grinned at her. "We're not exactly playing pai sho down there, you know, it's hard work."

"Even so," Flandre insisted.

Gryphon gave her a sidelong glance. "You want to hang out, Flan?"

"Uh-huh!"

"OK then," said Gryphon. "The house rule is, we're done work at dinnertime. So tonight, after dinner, I'm all yours. Promise."

"I'll hold you to that~!" sang Flandre with a lilt in her voice.

"Flandre," said Remilia with a very mild note of caution.

"What?" Flandre replied, all wide-eyed innocence, and Meiling suppressed a laugh.

Remilia gave a long-suffering sigh. "Never mind, do as you like."

With a cry of "Yay!" Flandre nearly tipped her chair over, tilting it far enough to get her arms around Gryphon's neck. Unperturbed, he kept eating as though nothing strange was going on.

Sakuya sighed wistfully. "M'lady is so generous..."

Remilia arched an eyebrow. "You just made it weird, Sakuya," she said, deadpan, then gave her a little grin.

Flandre taking up spell cards made me flash to Zaeed's line back in Shepard's 11, "Who the hell taught you to do that? As if you weren't dangerous enough already."

Which, given previous discussions around here about TouHou might actually be the opposite of the intended purpose, but some thoughts just won't vacate the skull until written down.

Also, apparently regarding G as Remilia's property is a running a joke in the household at this point.

They don't do quite the same thing here as they do in the games (since magical combat in OWaW is a little more complicated than danmaku), so Zaeed's line is probably applicable, yes. I guess we'll just have to trust that Remilia knows what she's doing as regards increasing/varying Flan's already impressive firepower. :)

Impressive, but not sustainable. Stopping mid-fight to recharge is unquestionably a vulnerable point that needs to be closed. If spell cards are more energy-efficient, I can see Remilia teaching them to Flandre, especially if it's relatively quick to learn.

Hmm, I thought the pauses were mostly due to the Neuroi infestation, though I guess we haven't had occasion to see Flandre light things up since to see where her abilities have settled afterward.

Dependent on both what the forty acres contains and how badly the Neuroi needed to go away, but probably true most of the time.

The "heavy volume of fire/pause to recharge" thing is a Neuroi hallmark, but then, so is the "crystals as part of a flight mechanism" thing, and Flan seems to have retained that. But you're right, she hasn't had an opportunity to really find the edges of her envelope yet.

In any case, the spell card thing is more about concentrating firepower. With the danmaku-style "barrage" spell that's about the only one she and Remilia both can cast, they can chew a Neuroi's armor to pieces fairly easily, but by the time they've exposed, located, and moved to attack the core it grows back. They don't have the quick pinpoint strike firepower necessary to close the deal. The witches get around this problem with modern weaponry and teamwork. For vampires, there are spell cards packing more directed punch.

(They weren't developed to fight Neuroi, but Remilia, contemplating ways to prepare her sister for the field, reckons they'll do the job. She's realistic enough to know that just asking Flan politely not to get involved won't work. Spell cards are plan B. :)

If they were fighting in Orussia, nobody would even notice, but the Gallians are pickier about massive collateral damage.

It's fortunate the Neuroi don't have an AT field, because that would make matters so much worse...

Not being that familiar with the Strike Witches source material, I had thought Neuroi were a 'crystals as a part of every mechanism' thing.

Tangentially, are the Strike Witches canon shows worth tracking down in their own right?

Remilia is a wise older sister. Who also probably wouldn't listen if asked not to get involved, depending on other circumstances. Besides, Flandre needs exercise/target practice, and no one is likely to complain about using Neuroi for that.

Well, yes, that is true.

That is... a matter of considerable contention. I think so? But boy howdy, does it have a tall WTF-am-I-doing curb to get on top of at the start. Once you get into it, it is much more than just a vehicle for pantyshots and moe...

... but it is still a vehicle for pantyshots and moe.

Indeed.

On the note of focused firepower, Flandre does have a weapon of her own, similar to Remilia's Gungnir. She has Laevatein, if memory serves, which gets basically the same animations with a color palette swap. Maybe a little differently shaped. (I admit to not being a bullet hell master, and have only seen animated shorts.)

Oh yes, I'm well aware of Lævatein, but at this point in the story, it's not in play. (Fortunately. If she'd hauled that out during the full-moon fever, it would have messed up everyone's day even worse.)

Reply from whoever is on radio duty at the time, too badly garbled to identify: "So why do you sound like you're fighting all of them at once?"
(Camera pans to the sky in the direction he's making best speed away from, showing a small, flying form in a garish yellow dress, with a bright green face locked in a manic grin, and the glint of rainbow crystals arrayed along thin wings, just before another epic fusillade of energetic death blots out all visibility.)

Yes, yes she is. And that was one of the best exchanges she had with the Doctor.

I used to have a bunch of audio samples from that episode, one of which was my default Windows error sound for years (the Cyber Leader declaring, "These things are irrelevant!"). :)
