"(S60) S5E2 Out of the Blue"

-9 The title of this piece was chosen because it refers to the evolution of the story in a couple of ways. Much of the text was originally developed for Clarion Call, but it didn't really fit with the story of the wedding attempt itself. The idea of making it a separate entr'acte sort of arrived, well, out of the blue. Which tied in well with the fact that much of the story involves people appearing unexpectedly - in one case literally out of the blue.

47 Yes, that's the same hat - Corwin's from A Rose for the New Year.

323 The Eta-2 Actis interceptor, the prototype of which would later turn up at the Muroc III trade show in Rogue Squadron.

546 Kard is an evolution of a character I originally invented for a story set in the Star Wars universe in about, um... 1985? Which I suppose makes him, in a very oblique way, the oldest original character in the UF universe - older even than Don Griffin.

842 Fans of the original Dragonlance Chronicles may recognize the words Tsuwabuki uses to dim and brighten the room as those used by Raistlin Majere to turn off and on the light on his mage's staff.

861 Like their counterparts in many FRPGs, svartelves can see into the infrared, making heat sources (like Tsuwabuki's blush) show up plainly in darkness.

863 A common fantasy convention - and not just fantasy, either, since I seem to recall that various sci-fi people, e.g. Tamaranians in the original New Teen Titans comics - can also do this.

928 Ana's name is derived from that of Anaximander of Miletus, an ancient Greek philosopher and student of Thales. Anaximander is credited with being the first person to propose a purely mechanical cosmology - a precursor of the Ptolemaic worldsystem under which Cephiro actually operates.

1038 We see Corwin's prediction come true in Code Name: Ultra.

1141 Leyna first appeared in Raven: Blood Ties, and acquires a last name here.

1174 It does not say Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty.

1327 Alfheim's vættir, unlike the hobbits of myth, do wear shoes. Besides, in this setting it'd be rude not to.

1468 In the Shire, "fool of a Took" has something of an air of compliment about it. Peri comes from a very long line of iconoclasts and daredevils.

1546 A variation on the real CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics that some scientists would be pleased to get hold of, I suspect, particularly in the materials sciences.

1593 Not to be confused with So You Are Falling from a Great Height, which is intended to be consulted by people who are currently experiencing skydiving accidents and similar misfortunes.

1641 This remains one of my favorite exchanges in the Symphony. I'm fond of the whole conversation, but especially these two lines.

1649 Professor Kraalgh wasn't actually supposed to be here for this scene, as he returned to the Klingon Empire the previous summer, but he's come back at great personal risk in order to consult with persons at B6 regarding the progress of the Klingon Civil War, which is well underway by this time - and while he's in town, what the hell. Meanwhile, the Society's current faculty advisor, Professor May, has left a couple of days early to spend his spring recess shooting new eps of Top Gear, the first of which - in progress on this very day - would later appear as Road Film (With Fighting).

That makes Kard as old as I am. And I'm really impressed that you've kept him up enough to bring him in for the UF verse. How much of his character is still part of that original incarnation?

The words literally mean 'Light' and 'Dark' in the series' 'Language of Magic' if anyone unfamiliar with the books wanted to know. The original Chronicles, Twins Saga and Brothers in Arms prequels used to be some of my favorite books.

>1174 It does not say Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty.

Hmm. Perhaps the third of Ivaldi's blades? It has the same basic hilt styling features - simple crossguard, round pommel - as Cortana... Alas, the text does not specify the style of writing. An adjective such as 'angular' might have given away whether it was runic or not. Interesting.

You remember correctly. This turned up in the X-Men/Teen Titans crossover:

"Bozhe moi!"
"Oh, a new language to learn!"
"Fraulein...sprechen zie Deutsch?"

I'm not much for the shouts of 'Youre my hero' and the like, but I have to say that setting thought admiral Captain Slow, as the new faculty advisor is...beautiful. Or something. :) VERY lovely, in fact. But, I have to ask...what is he professor of, and will we ever see him actually duel/fight someone? He has had at least 4 duels, 3 to the death, we know that, but we've never actually seen him fight anyone.

Well, I think it was said in the Featured Document entitled 'From The Desk of President Tiefeld' that he'd be something to do with engineering, and as far as duelling goes...

Clarkson (bemused): "Bloody hell, James, why didn't you say you could use a bat'leth like that?"

May (slightly annoyed): "You never asked."

EDIT: I misremembered. He is in fact going to be teaching Klingon lang and lit, C20-22 military history (as part of, as they called it at Kent, the Department of Insensate Carnage), and helping out with the music spods as well. I apologise for the above error.

And if, somewhere along the way, he manages to put together a couple intramural games of klin zha kinta, all well and good.

The question is, of course, is he using the bat'leth in the manner it's supposed to be used. For all we know, he's using it to julienne legumes. (Tricky, but not impossible.)

Of course, a true bat'leth master may insist that, in addition to splitting the skulls of the unbelievers, bat'leths are also elegantly designed for precise culinary cutting. Who am I to argue with a Klingon carrying a bat'leth?

Now I'm imagining the Saturday Night Live skit where they had a Samurai Tailor, except with a Klingon.

I believe that's a regular skit on the new season of SNL being broadcast in New Avalon these days. Pretty funny guy, that Jh'ym B'hlush'ee. Not many Salusians can do that kind of humor.

I suppose you're the one got me writing the mini "Getting Things Sorted" by accident. Well, good on you, and I hope you liked it, even if it wasn't duels to the death.
