   >G, the Recipe for real Boston Baked Beans you mention in TIA #3... Do
>you or Zoner actually have that recipe?

I don't believe so, no - Zoner outlined that scene, and as far as I know he just threw in the reference because he likes baked beans, not because he knows how to cook them, and I've never gone to the trouble. However, a quick scout round the Internet turns up any number of Boston baked bean recipes, including one at the official Crock-Pot® website that looks like a good starting place:

Boston Baked Beans
Serves 8

Ingredients:
2 pounds dried small white beans
12 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
1 cup molasses
2 tablespoons dry mustard
˝ cup dark brown sugar
˝ cup chopped onions
Ľ cup salt pork or thick sliced bacon, chopped into small pieces
Olive oil

Directions:
Soak beans in water in uncovered stoneware overnight (or for a minimum of 8 hours). After soaking, place stoneware in slow cooker heating base, cover, and cook on Low for 3 hours. Drain liquid reserving 1 cup and set aside. Remove beans and set aside.

Coat bottom of a skillet with olive oil and add salt pork or bacon; sauté on stovetop set to medium heat for 5-10 minutes to render fat.

Add 1 cup liquid from beans (saved from soaking) and remaining ingredients including reserved beans and bacon into the stoneware. Mix together thoroughly.

Remove from stovetop and place stoneware in slow cooker heating base. Cover and cook on Low for 10-12 hours or on High for 6-8 hours.

Personally, if I were making beans by that recipe (and I may do someday, if I'm feeling inspired), I'd jack up the brown sugar, eyeball the salt pork and probably end up using much more than a quarter-cup, and toss in some maple syrup, but I expect it would take some trial and error to get it entirely right. Crockpottery is an inexact science.

Now, being a Mainer, I'm required by custom to say at this point that I don't see anything wrong with the tinned beans from Burnam & Morrill of Portland; and even if I wasn't, I would anyway, because they're the Beans Of My Childhood, as it were. That said, I'm pretty sure my mother has an actual beanpot kicking around someplace, though knowing Mom, she has a plant potted in it. :)

Well... not as such. OTMH is a compilation of the columns I wrote when I worked at the Katahdin Times. I haven't done that for rather a long time now, so there's something of a dearth of new material. Also, the first volume is a long, long way from breaking even, which would tend to contraindicate a second one for the time being.

Not particularly. It's a long way from "not as bad as expected" to "hey, where can I get more of this guy's work?"

Having read the first two Empowered volumes, I think it's amusing, but a side-genre that I'm unsure I can keep up that much interest in.

....now, the galactic conquerer stuck in a belt? HE is a very positive note.

See, now I have this horrifying cross-over prototype in my head that involves the World-Raping Demon Goat somehow becoming a roommate of Raven's in New Avalon. Thankfully the particulars of this terrible vision remain hidden beyond the mists of coherence, but I do suspect there would be talk of MythBusters DVD collections.

Yeah, it's got "goat" in it. That can't be good. I remember this fic about a college that used a goat's head as a mascot, and...

Well, Rob, if it helps, he uses a lot of different names for himself. That's just one of them.

He was one of these galactic conquerer things that Emp put a power-draining belt on to slow him down. Too bad he was an energy being... now he's stuck in the belt.

This may be more of a MegaZone question, but I'm going to try here first...

In looking at the introduction to UF, MegZone said the following: "And the whole thing is based on WPI, the Dirty Pair, and an opening to a Def Leppard song..." Is that Def Leppard song "When The Walls Came Tumbling Down"? That's the song that leads into the first chapter, but there are a few Def Leppard songs in Core #1.

Yeah, it's the monologue about "the aftermath of the radium bomb". That's why the (illegally modified) WPI nuclear reactor blows the city up on January 1. We never did much with the "whole sky froze golden" part afterward, more's the pity.

I was the resident Leppardhead, and the opening monologue to that song just seemed to me to describe the aftermath of any random Lovely Angel mission. "When the Walls Came Tumbling Down" is fairly obscure, coming off of their LP debut On Through the Night. Most people don't think of them before Pyromania.

The song itself, however, has no relevance. "All the women were captured and chained?" Uh, no.

Actually, the WDF discovered the planet Gor in the mid-21st century. Unfortunately, there was a terrible misunderstanding with some kind of freakin' wizard and, um, the planet's not there any more.

No, but they're very often found together in field medical kits. Rad-X is made by the same company that makes Med-X™ brand morphine syrettes (also popular with the firms that assemble and market first aid kits for people who work in hazardous conditions, such as combat soldiers and ruin explorers).

I was re-reading the CSI stories today (working on X-Eve, one needs a distraction), and I noticed something.

Does the color of a Lens signify anything? Gryph's is red, but most of the others seem to be green.

(Back in the OR days, I made the Lens blue because of the anime... one of only two things I liked about it)

Nothing really concrete, no. They seem in some way to key on colors significant to their owners, but there's no solidly definitive rhyme or reason to it in-story - they just kind of happen that way. Out-of-story it's a bit of passive, sometimes not-entirely-conscious, character design on my part.

Kei's, for instance, is/was also red, while Juri's and Shiori's ended up sorta-wine-colored and orange respectively; Saionji's is green for obvious reasons, and if either of the Kaoru twins had one it'd probably be blue. The members of the Hanagumi have Lenses that go with their uniform key colors, Utena's is (unsurprisingly) rose-pink (actually, if you look at it very closely, it's a very finely tessellated, constantly changing interplay of red and white), and Skuld's is red because red, white, and black are her signature colors as well. Grissom's is green but then so is his lightsaber, and that's probably because green is, for whatever reason, a recurring theme in the presentation and packaging for the original CSI series (so if Horatio Caine had one, it'd probably be orange). Corwin's, oddly enough, is black, while Nikola Tesla's is a sort of electric-arc blue. And so on.

(Tac Div and Support Division IPO Lensmen are called "blue Lensmen" because of the color of their uniforms, not necessarily their Lenses.)

If I recall my Doc Smith correctly, the canonical Lenses are all multicolored, since they're not really one gem so much as a matrix of jillions of tiny ones.

You're in for a treat. I'd say it's narrowly better than 8th MS Team; most of those I've talked to call it the other way but agree it's a close match.

Personally, I always thought that had something to do with the disk Marty found with his name on it in....I forget what story it was, but when she died.

I think, myself, that she pulled a Marvel Comics Optimus Prime and saved herself on a floppy disk. :) Now if only Marty would dig it out of the closet and pop it into the ol' compumatilizer....

Always been a big fan of Nene. Scoop Chase remains my favorite episode 'cause of all the Nene and generally brighter, cheerier tone compared to the others. (Not to say I dislike the rest, it's just...sometimes those dark'n'gritty cyberpunk settings get a bit bland, y'know? There's a *daytime* too, and it's not always overcast or raining.)

I really should stop re reading old stories... but...

Anyway, I was re reading Phil's excellent mini series about the Sterling daughters, and as I got to the 'happen ending, but we need a concert to do this right' scene I got anvil'd by a thought. Another thought, I should say. And anvil'd bad enough I couldnt NOT ask the way I did the first time this occured to me.

We know that as of the warping in of the Dyson sphere Mylene's drummer is:
Doktor Tektonik, the Honourable J. Maurice MacEchearn the Third!

I dont recall if it was asked, or just assumed as 'well DUH', but I'm 99% sure that it was confirmed SOMEWHERE that this is, in fact, Moose's father. but thats not the question... to me the real question is:
Does Moose know about his dad's time as Dr. Tektonic? and/or do they happen to sit and swap stories about wierd shiznit' that's happend to them on tour when Moose comes home to visit after the AoN hit it big?

Oh, you know, the usual. Pretty sets, good effects, a high standard of quipsmanship, but the hardcore fans are pissed off because everybody knows Koth didn't know SpoQ until well after he graduated from the Imperial War Academy and what the hell was that bit with Intelligence Officer Nikaal anyway. Everybody liked the new kid playing ZheQov, though.

Did they film the engine-room scenes in a bloodwine distillery? (For those who don't know, the Abrams movie engine-room was a Budweiser brewery, IIRC, probably because they were running out of money.)

We did the clear water pipes at DD for the Kirk and Scotty bit in there, which were entirely cg, as well as a mostly all-digital Scotty. You don't do that much work without a) the money and b) the script and storyboards to make the bid for how much money they had to spend on it. So I can assure you it was an actual set design choice, and not an afterthought. :)

I'm sure that only makes your point for you, but that's neither here nor there.

My knowledge of how big budget movies are planned and shot is less than that of someone who actually works in the industry (like you and Wedge, IIRC). My suggestion that youthe production company werewas running out of money was a half-hearted attempt to explain a decision I disagree with. It just looks wrong to me.

Nothin' wrong with just saying "the engine room looks like ass, IMO," rather than imputing financial incompetence to the location planners. :)

I kind of like it, but then to my mind all large industrial settings look like the steam plants of paper mills, because that's what I grew up with.

I get the impression actual engineering is done there, which is a plus. Also, it's easier for Scotty to hide his distillery in all the pipes, which is very important.

Following this subthread finally helped me put a finger on what bugged me about it. Its not the plethora of conduit, etc, that bugged me about it all, its that it felt not futuristic enough. Might have helped to have some strange glowy machines that looked futuristic along with all that white painted piping and conduitage.

though there is a reason that stuff's all white: helps you spot if anythings leaking, cause the paint/insulation/whatever will be discolored!
