All things considered, it probably wasn't a bad plan regardless of what happens. He's already proven that he can fly the He 162, which makes him more valuable with the 501st than anywhere else. If the Kaiser concluded that Gryphon was mad as a hatter, it would still be a relatively harmless madness that doesn't affect his ability to fight the Neuroi.
