"fun in Cyrodiil"

In honor of Fallout 4's release, I've... played Oblivion again instead. Hey, at least it's a BethSoft game with a 4 in it.

Finally got around to doing the quest lines I never do, and in so doing reminded myself that there are reasons why there are some quest lines I never do. (And was reminded once again how pleased I was when there was a "no, fuck you guys" option to the Dark Brotherhood line in Skyrim. I still haven't played the version where you actually play along. Probably not going to.)

Was also reminded, when I reached the end of the main quest yesterday, of how satisfying it is to just walk up to Mankar Camoran and shank him before he even finishes his patronizing little speech. "And so you come to me at LAAARGH" dead. "Oh, I'm sorry," (wipe blood off sword) "you were saying?" There's a moment like that in the Mages' College storyline in Skyrim too, when the Thalmor guy starts a speech but the game doesn't compel you to hear him out - probably both unintentional on the designers' part, but just richly satisfying. :)

The thing I love about the Elder Scrolls games is how plainly, irreconcilably ridiculous their storylines are, even by the standards of fantasy roleplaying. Tertia Caxton (named for a character I created for a story I never got around to writing) is now the Hero of Kvatch, Champion of Cyrodiil, Arch-Mage of the Mages' Guild, Master of the Fighters' Guild, Knight-Errant of both Leyawiin (despite the fact that the Countess of Leyawiin hates her guts with an undying, incandescent passion) and Cheydinhal (despite the fact that she assassinated the Captain of the Cheydinhal City Guard and desecrated the tomb of Countess Llathasa), the Grey Fox, leader of the Dunbarrow Pirates, Listener of the Dark Brotherhood (albeit an extremely negligent one; I prefer to roleplay it that she's put the Brotherhood out of business in Cyrodiil by taking it over and then declining to do her actual job), valued champion of every single Daedric Prince except Mehrunes Dagon (who is presumably more than a little annoyed with her), and the Lord Crusader of the Knights of the Nine at the same time.

Oh yes - and she's Sheogorath, Daedric Prince of Madness. Talk about imposter syndrome.

What I'm saying is, I understand the developers wanting to give the player a lot of options, but I can't help think that for any individual character, selecting some of them should close off the route to others. :)

Anyway. It's been nice revisiting Cyrodiil. The game's graphics haven't aged terribly well, particularly the characters, but the environments are pretty, and sometimes it's still nice to just roam around taking in the countryside.

Actually, what's sucked up all my time, or at least my mental bandwidth, has been a combination of Family Stuff, Health Stuff, Work Stuff, and Finishing the Last Undergraduate Semester Stuff. Replaying Oblivion is just what I've done with the time when I haven't had the spoons to do anything else...

Mark me down as another of those who thought you might have been sucked into FO4 along with a myself and a few others. Though I admit RL has also been taking up most of my own time, between work and my father's recent surgery, such that I didn't really get a chance until the other night to play for more than an hour every other day.

If I had to make a case for getting FO4, it most certainly include one of the best servings of ham & cheese in the franchise's history: The Silver Shroud. Ok, it's your character hamming it up by playing a fictional character who's The Shadow with the numbers filed off, but the voice actors apparently had serious fun with this quest. I offer Exhibit A, namely the final showdown of the quest, with your character giving the Shroud's catchphrase in all of its hammy gloriousness.

I do plan to get Fallout 4 eventually. Mostly, there are three things I'm waiting for:

1) I'm not in the last two weeks of the last semester of my undergraduate career.
2) It costs less than 60 frickin' bucks.
3) It might actually be kind of stable. You know, say, crashing to desktop no more than every couple of hours.

Being as it's a Bethsoft game, 2 and 3 will probably happen at around the same time. Like they did for Fallout 3. And New Vegas. And The Elder Scrolls V. And The Elder Scrolls IV. And The Elder Scrolls III. :)

Hm. Fallout 4 certainly has its share of bugs, but I haven't seen any stability problems. It's been quite solid for me on that front. Do you have an older system? I -will- say that it seems woefully inefficient for the less than modern graphics quality.

No, but it's a running joke to me that Bethesda games have been hilariously, unworkably unstable for at least the first six months after release since, oh, at least Morrowind. It's been consistent across the board for all of the titles I mentioned in my previous post. And that was four computers ago, so, y'know. :)

However, I notice that Fallout 4 doesn't actually use the same engine that all of those games were based on, so maybe it doesn't have that specific problem. (On the downside, that means all the cheat codes are going to be different. I've gotten good at futzing with Gamebryo over the last 15 years. :)

Funny enough, the lockpick and gold (bobby pins and bottle cap) codes are the same console command code as previous Bathdesda (intentional misspelling) games.

See Comment.

Actually it mostly does. Or rather, it uses an updated and futzed with version of the Skyrim engine (that is, I believe, and updated and futzed with version of the previous engines.) People are using Skyrim mod tools to make at least basic mods until the new GECK is released, they are that similar. For cheats, '~' still brings up Ye Olde Console, player.additem, player.modav, etc still do what you expect, etc.

Oh, good. They probably just changed the name. Decided it had evolved enough from the original Gamebryo Engine that it should be called something else, or the like.

Bethsoft confirmed that FO4's engine is a modified version of Skyrim's engine, much as FO3 uses a modified Oblivion engine.

Yeah, but unlike some of the quieter moments in FO3, I don't often find myself in the middle of post-apocalyptic Boston and thinking "Did I stumble into Skyrim by mistake?"

Though, in that grand Bethesda tradition, I have found myself spending hours playing every side and radiant quest, getting constant reminders that there's a main quest to pursue.

In the playthrough of Oblivion I just wrapped up, the Amulet of Kings took 73 days to be delivered to Weynon Priory, which is probably a record for shitty courier service even in Tamriel. It was very sporting of Mehrunes Dagon to hold off on actually launching the full-dress invasion until Tertia finished all her other business.

* In the midst of Fighters' Guild business, Tertia overhears a couple of citizens chatting near the Great Tree in Chorrol.

"Did you hear? Daedra have attacked Kvatch! The whole city is destroyed!"

"No!"

"Absolutely!"

"Good day."

"See you."

Shit, thinks Tertia, glad I don't have to go anywhere near there. Also, I admire how quickly that Orc recovered his sangfroid...

Translates to 50 USD, at the moment, and Paladingames works spectacularly, I've bought 4 games so far, and made damn sure I became a founder. AND it is, to the best of my knowledge, world-wide. To make sure, pop Mark a line and ask...my experience is that you'll have an answer within 30 minutes, if it's any time between 8 in the morning and 2 at night, UK time.

   >1) I'm not in the last two weeks of the last semester of my

I feel your pain. Got a new job just five months ago and between weird scheduling and the occasional need to sleep, I haven't had real time to devote to FO3. Had it since launch day, only up to lvl 35 and just got around to what's effectively the end to Act 2 of the game.

>2) It costs less than 60 frickin' bucks.

Yeah, being a gamer is not cheap. FO4 didn't just extract $60 from my pocket, I also had to invest in either a next-gen console or PC, decided an XBone was the cheaper route for now.

>3) It might actually be kind of stable. You know, say, crashing to

I haven't heard too many horror stories about FO4, which I think is because Bethesda is using the Creation engine this time around. Though it still seems to suffer from amusing physics bugs, like the radscorpion who popped out of the ground to attack me...then immediately disappeared into the sky. And corpses still have that habit of twitching and jittering on the floor.

Just in time for the first DLC to drop and introduce a whole new set of bugs.
