"NieR: Automata"

LAST EDITED ON Mar-31-17 AT 09:24 AM (EDT) by pjmoyer (moderator)

This is a neat little weird game from Japan, the distant sequel to semi-canon sidestory game that follows weirder ending of another weird game.

This is a game on Earth in a distant future of 11945, where last remains on humanity hid on the Moon while alien machines and human androids slug it down on planet. It's a game about love, tragedy, duty, some plot twists and 26 endings (only 5 of them are actual endings, other are more comedic).

This is a game by Platinum Studio and weird moon-masked man Yoko Taro.

Here is very good overview of PS4 demo, game runs moderately nicely on PC.

It's also probably the only game I've played where you can get an ending by selling something to a vendor...

But yes, weird, but very good game. It's got Platinum's trademark tight combat design with Yoko Taro's... unique take on things. And it encourages replaying via a sort of 'new game plus' that has a very unique spin on the idea of 'new game plus'.

It's also hard to talk too much about without spoiling some of the neat bits.

All androids and mechanical lifeforms come equipped with self-destruct. It's essential feature.
And it would kill you only in one location. But it's funny ending.

You can pet your robotic flying Pod. It increases affinity and is no less of essential feature.

Having now done two complete playthroughs of the game since it came out on PC - and now working on 100%-ing it - I think it's fair to say I've been highly enjoying the game and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Yoko Taro or Platinum.

Anyone who has gotten ending E will know why I needed 2 complete playthroughs... not going to spoil it for anyone else. This game is best experienced with as little spoilering as possible. :)

Why are they blindfolded? That strikes me as inconvenient at best.

So far as I'm aware those are visors or something akin to the full dive rigs known to be used by Major Kusanagi.

I've also seen them depicted as being like the faces of a certain pair of French robot musicians and displaying what amount to LED emojis.

(quite likely to be missing the joke entirely)

Fancy VR goggles to be cut off dramatically in plot-mandated episodes.

Same with veil-handsets Operators wear.
