"E3! General yammering"

So who here paid any attention to E3 this year! Probably at least a couple of you! Anything you're looking forward to playing? Anything you wish you had the console for? Any gripes about what they should have done! Anything?

For me, my friend and I were pretty hyped for Bethesda's event, and, terrible stream aside, we werent much disappointed! (we were apparently in the minority in this)

Wolfenstein 2 made her want to play the others, so I got her them, and filled out what I was missing for myself, thanks to the Steam sale.

Neither of us have VR stuff, so the Doom and Fallout 4 wasn't PERSONALLY of interest to us, but it sure looks nice! The new Dishonored looked interesting, even if it was all Cutscene. Neither of us play ESO or ESLegends so those were the only real duds for us.

Evil Within 2 looks interesting, at least, even though neither of us have played it or really have any desire to.

The Creators Club we're all for, because official mods done by trusted fans? Can you imagine the Elswyr mod done with proper backing? It's a whole frigging expansion as it is!

After that we were interested in Nintendo's, which had some pretty neat stuff on offer. Kirby, Yoshi, announcement that they're working on Metroid Prime 4, Ultra Sun and Moon, and news that they're doing a full proper Pokemon on Switch? I have only one hope for this; that it finally gives us ALL regions in a single game. All regions, all Pokemon. That's my desire for this game. It's always our desire but on console it's *possible*!

And then AFTER the direct we learned about Nintendo's own METROID 2 REMAKE AAAAAA

....so, anyone else?

(Oh, and from Sony, Spiderman Arkham York City, *YES*! Also the incredibly adorable Moss!)
(and from Microsoft an out of the blue new Dragonball Z game! Eeee~!)

Look, I like Bethesda games as much as the next dude who uses a pipboy bag and has the dragon symbol from ES tattooed on his arm, but I gotta admit, this year was mostly "our old stuff, BUT in VR! Creators club was super cool (I liked the callout to the old PC Gamer back page joke) and I'm excited that they're moving forward with that concept of modders getting paid for their work. It'll be interesting to see how that interacts with Steam Workshop.

>....so, anyone else?

I commented on twitter earlier that it's a bad day when, among the exclusives you announce for your new console, allowing backwards compatibility for a 15 year old game being the best of them means that you maybe didn't have a great E3 . That said, if you haven't played it, and you like the UF aesthetic, you should play Crimson Skies.

For my money, Ubisoft won. Skull and Bones looks amazing and I wish that I liked other people enough to play it, the new AC game looks gorgeous, I'm drinking the tears of white boys whinging about FC5 oh and they're MAKING A SEQUEL TO BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL!?!?!?!

Picked up a copy and loaded it up on our original Xbox. Haven't had a chance to sit down and actually play it yet (on a glorious 80" projector screen).

Far Cry 5 looks to be the first one yet that actually have a reasonably happy ending...so far. Of course, this is Oobi, I'm sure they'll fuck it up, but hope springs eternally.

Beyond Good & Evil, which has been named both a prequel as well as "2". Either way, wonder how many people have been waiting for that one. I'd guess tens of thousands. I sure as hell was one of them.

I keep getting every so fucking annoyed with the NFS games, it's either bumpercars galore, or there is absolutely fuck-all in the way of story, but still...this one looked interesting.

Anthem is...I dunno. First reaction: "ALL NEW BIOWARE GAME!!!" And then, "And it's a Destiny clone, because THAT will work SO well..."

The new Assassin's Creed looks interesting, on the one hand, what with the setting. Going back, and away from guns and modern sounds great. On the other hand, looking at the gameplay videos? Well, what with a bird that you can steer and who can spot and mark targets, xp-level-up-abilities, the seeming "charge down the middle" mentality, and arrows that FOLLOW THE TARGET...this didn't feel very "assassin", it felt like "Ghost Recon: Ancient Egypt".

Detroit: Becoming Human looked good the first time I saw it. This years showing didn't make it look any less spectacular. I'm really interested in this one.

Battlefront 2....or, is that, Battlefield Star Wars 2? Because, you can't in any way tell me that that wasn't what the first game was.

Skull and Bones looked SO good! So spectacularly so...until I realized that it was a multiplayer only "action adventure game". Because those? Never work out properly.

And then, of course, there is the new Call of Duty...which probably went something like, "Shit, Battlefield has made a new WWOne game! We have to come up with an answer!" "Well, we can't do WWOne, because then everyone will think we're just copying them!" "I KNOW....wait...wasn't there another world war...?" "Yeah...I think so! WWTwo or something like that." "That's IT! We'll do CoD WWTWO! THAT'LL wow everyone! It's new, it's fresh, it's never been done before!" "Genius...GENIUS, I tell you!"

Apart from FC5, which I'm sure will disappoint me, but which LOOKS good, NFS Payback, of which the same, Detroit: Becoming Human which looks great, and BG&E2/Prequel which, well, it's the BG&E2/Prequel...there wasn't really much to wow me in this years E3, in all honesty.

>So who here paid any attention to E3 this year!

Well, I saw what Nintendo had to offer (which is pretty much all I'm interested in, gaming wise), but the stuff I'm most interested in was actually revealed a week before in the Pokémon Direct. (Seriously, you have no idea how hyped I am about Pokémon Gold and Silver coming to 3DS Virtual Console.) That said, the Superstar Saga and Metroid 2* remakes look interesting, and the Splatoon 2 tournament basically ensured I would make sure I had a Switch by the game's release.

Edit: Forgot to mention - the regulars on a Discord server I'm a member of have come to the conclusion that Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is going to be better than anyone wants it to be.

*My first reaction to this: "Huh. So that's why they took down AM2R."

E3 this year was pretty underwhelming IMHO, as a lot of it could be characterized as "The old stuff, but better!" Between Bethesda trying to sell us Skyrim for the umpteenth time and Microsoft seeming to have a repeat of its '13 performance ("All new system that's really just our old one but a bit better and a LOT MORE EXPENSIVE!"), I had trouble really looking for things to get excited about. In fact, besides the Wolfenstein announcement, Bethesda was a wash for me this year. Ditto with Bioware, Anthem looks cool to somebody who was already tuning in for the announcement of Destiny 2's beta launch date, but the total absence of Mass Effect pretty much confirmed the stories that EA is putting the franchise in cryo next to Dead Space.

Beyond those, there were a few games that caught my interest. Detroit: Become Human looks appealing to me because I like the idea of being able to play the classic "robot uprising" story from the viewpoint of the robots rather than the hapless humans. And Metro Exodus looks very sweet if you're one of those gamers who sometimes likes a storyline bleaker than a Siberian winter (which I am). And a coworker pointed out Ashen to me, which has a sort of Dark Souls-vibe to it, so I might pick that up as well.

Overall, I think it was all a bit of a wash. Some interesting new IP, a few hoped for sequels and DLCs, but nothing that really stole the show this year. Unless you're a Microsoft fanboy who bought the XBox One S and are being tempted by the XBox One X (apparently the naming department was recently sacked) because this time it offers "true" 4K capability.

Oh! It's using the short video Kara as a launch point. This almost makes me wish I had a PS4.

I had actually completely forgotten about Ubi's games! I didn't actually see the presentation - still haven't - so it kinda just went in me ear and out the other.

Kingdom Battle does look good! I love me some tactical RPG, and it looks like it'll be pretty fun, despite the Rabbids.

I DESPERATELY want to know what BGE2 has to do with the original besides the name Montpelier and pig people. Also why the constant swearing. It didn't enhance anything, it was just THERE. Really, really jarring since the original was T, and even that was just for mature themes and not constant swearing.

My compy died before I could get and play Far Cry 4, but I finished Far Cry 3 and it's ending was some grade-A bullshit. I don't trust FC5 to be anything but more bullshit.

I care exactly zero about WW2 Call of Duty, so that's a wash.

I actually DID play Crimson Skies! I bought an old Xbox and slapped some games onto it via shenanigans. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Skies, and Metal Wolf Chaos are the three I actively remember. I take it from things Ive heard that the One X is compatible with original Xbox games? I didn't watch the Microsoft or most of Sony's either. I don't have a PS3, 4, VR, Vita, or ecksbawxone, so most of that was just white noise for me. And saddening that Spiderman Arkham York City is an *actual* exclusive. .....at least until Valve starts making noises about steam sales and their massive market and can make it worth their while a year or two down the line.

I really, really hope Moss gets a PC version sooner rather than later though. Especially one that doesn't require VR. Dear god it looks adorable.

(Starchild meanwhile looks like a more colorful Inside, right down to the character animations. What is the point of *that* game?)

I actually give a negative amount of craps about Assassins Creed.

The only racing game I want is another, proper, Burnout. Burnout 3: Takedown hit that precise sweet spot for me between arcadey racer and depth of gameplay that I want in a racing game. Which is to say 'laughably shallow, but deeper than Mario Kart'.

(Edit to add: not that I don't love me some Mario Kart, but it's not something you (well, I) can play for hours at a stretch the way I could Burnout. Also, amazing-assmusic in Burnout, and getting a modern one that's easier to add my own music to to override the stuff I don't want to hear would be amazing. Burnout Paradise wasn't BAD, but it's been so many years, and it wasn't as 'instant gratification' as Takedown was.)

From what I've read elsewhere, the creators have said it's technically a prequel to BG&E. Remember how in the first game, all the hybrid animal people were common and an accepted part of society? BG&E2 is supposedly going to detail how that actually came to be (along with its dynamic solar system modeling to make "realtime" day/night cycles), so your custom character can supposedly be human or hybrid and work their way up to social revolution.

Well, the swearing I can agree didn't really do much for the thing. Still and all. It's supposed to run in connection with the first, and there were shots shown of a younger Pey'j last year. So, the suspicion is a prequel, even though it IS named "2". Oh, and you know, the video...I mean, what better than a "chavpanzee" as I saw it described? Just hilarious.
(Edit:)Oh, and did anyone else notice what the pig says when Knox hands over the swiss chocolate? "Pey'J"...

FC 4 was no better. You have the choice of shit ending 1 or shit ending 2, depending on what you've chosen earlier in the game. Well, and the hidden "completely different ending 0".
FC5 at least looks like it has the potential to have an ending that doesn't shout "All life is shit, get to know this!" Hell, you're apparently supposed to be able to just cut loose and go fishing for a couple hours. Which, you know...if the game is to the level that testers literally DO that...I might actually feel some interest.

>I care exactly zero about WW2 Call of Duty, so that's a wash.

Well, I've entirely and utterly lost interest in either BF or CoD since about 10 games ago. Though I MIGHT pick up BF1 in about a year, in order to see what, if any, single-player campaign they have, what with the WW1 setting.

Now, the latest LOOKS good and all, and, well...moving in the other direction, as it was, AWAY from newer and cooler tools...yeah, ok, good idea. But no.

While I want a reasonable racing game with a story. Which precludes most any "circuit racing game" because the story just isn't there. A nice "car-based heist game" though...yeah, sure. Hey, look at how the "Furiously Fast" movies hit a note with people. But, to each his own.

I missed that part~ also, the chavpanzee seems....well, remember the guff people gave Sing for having a gorilla gang? Maybe they should've saved that for this.

Modern Warfare is when I a tally started caring about Drab Brown Modern Realistic FPSes. Bad Company 2 was a nice surprise, too. Modern Warfare 2 was pretty good. Never got to play MW3. It never went on sale for less than like thirty bucks, that I can recall.

Be careful what you wish for with remakes. I wanted a remake of Final Fantasy 3 (the NES one) for ages, but they gave me the DS one which had...ugh...CHARACTERS and stuff. They changed the story so much. And introduced like two second load times on every screen transition, of which there are *many*.

I've never cared about Assassins Creed, and each new nearly annual game has just dunked my enthusiasm ever lower, especially as reports of all the bugs inevitably come out.

Well, a driving game with a story isn't a bad thing, by any means. It's just not what I personally would *prefer* from a racing game. :) I enjoyed what I played of Driver: San Franciso, for instance~

Also at old, old PS2 Spy Hunter. The one where you never leave the car. That was a friggin' BLAST.

Well, FC2 is a good game, as such. But 2, 3, 4 all had really shit endings. "Life is a vale of tears, get to know this." Sorry, I get enough of that on the telly, as it were. Don't need it in my games. But as noted, FC5 looks like it could be reasonable.

I could get it for less than that, now, but then, that's online, and in Sweden, so...

Which is why I just want them to upgrade it until it can run on a modern comp. Nothing more, nothing less. Hey, look at the remastered Lucasarts games. They ROCK.

Well, the various versions of AC2 was REAL good. I liked Ezio Auditore da Firenze. The first game was spectacular, in a way, but could've been so much more, and they managed that in AC2. And then it went downhill with "much make more, cooler, more gadgets, this that the other". And honestly, the story did falter after 3, too. But, I had to have the Victorian London one. But that's it for me.

Oh, yes. *plays Peter Gunne*

Oh, right, forgot! New expansion coming for X-Com 2. Note, expansion, not DLC. New classes, new enemies, new allies, new everything apperently.
