Old King Bumi of Omashi probably ate actual rocks too, and just randomly noticed that jennamite was tastier than gneiss. Dude was crazy. :)

"Stone soup" is a classic fable about cooperation and community-building; it's presumably been retold and repackaged a million times in modern popular culture.
