I expect that the first time a beginning dimension traveler encounters a dimension where they were obviously NOT considered by The Powers for inclusion can be pretty jarring, especially if they never attended the requisite "So you don't have a DC: How to handle being a unique in the multiverse" reading by Bacon.
On the flip side, it would also probably be pretty jarring to find your DC... but to find significant differences from yourself, like gender, race, species...
