"RE: Our Witches at War Eps. 09-13, RND, 14" In response to message #0      On the B-36's size: my Dad was stationed in Japan in the late 1950's; he was an aircraft electrician in the Air Force, worked on B-57s. He once told me about a B-36 making an emergency landing at his base. Now, the '36 was only supposed to land at bases where the runways were rated for the size and weight of the thing; this one wasn't. When it touched down, the runway was only *just* wide enough to fit the tires on (and this was a runway that B-29's (and later, B-52s) landed on with no problem,) but the weight of the plane literally drove the landing gear through the tarmac, and the landing gear held up to plowing three tracks through the runway for nearly half a mile, until it came to a stop with the gear buried halfway up to the fuselage in the ground. They had to cut the thing apart and truck it out in pieces, because the runway, even if they could have got the plane out of it to make repairs, was only 2/3rds the minimum length of takeoff run needed to fly it out of there.
