Here's the hell of it:

I've dealt with people who were facing up to their lifetime of being an asshole with the intent of being better, and petty emotional blackmail from my brother when he needed money.

It's hard to tell the difference at the first round. It only starts being visible three or four rounds in, as the recovering asshole changes, and the petty emotional blackmailer stays on their loop.
