As for Miku, yes, her association with spring onions is directly related to the PV of a cover of "Ievan Polkka" in her voice, said video being a riff on the "girl from Bleach spinning a leek" cartoon which featured instead a chibi version of Miku spinning a spring onion. The chibi version of Miku from the video went on to become a semi-separate mascot character, Hachune Miku, and spring onions would be associated with them both for... well, for the rest of time, presumably.

The Hachune Miku/spring onion thing then sparked fads in Vocaloid fandom for Signature Items and derivative mascots—a pair of trends that converged in the person of Takoluka, who is both. :)
