One of the nice things that occationally shows up in DC's JSA is that - you have the old school heroes like Wildcat, the original Flash, the original Green Lantern... then you have the 'modern' generation of heroes, who they advise. It's also telling that they don't take the command position very much, unless it requires them to do so.

(The denoument of the 'Princes of Darkness' storyline, for example, was very much a case of generations and their effects on each other.)
