My favorite part of Project Binky is the absolute and utter _lack_ of insanity in the finished project.

If I remember my numbers correctly, Binky is going to end up being an ultralight all wheel drive rally car with somewhere around three hundred horses - at the wheel.

SURE, that's a considerable number. Even a large number - but it's not an insane number. With a proper ECU that works both at partial and full throttle, it would even be street drivable.

The worksmanship is brilliant though - and I'm not sure if I'm referring to the videography or the carsmithing.

Ummm...no. No, Binky is very specifically NOT going to be a rally car, but a dedicated street car. Admittedly, there have been plates included for the potential of adding a cage, but that's just there because it would be foolish not to add them. Everything else makes it rather obvious that it is NOT meant for rally.

Well, ok, yeah, this is certainly true. But for Binky to meant to be USED as such, there are a lot of things that aren't there, and a lot more things that shouldn't be but are.

There are different grades of rallying, though. I mean, there's the full-dress Subaru Impreza STi WRC GT4 ANSI PBJ EIEIO lunatic level, sure, but there are also classes that use... well, road cars.

Oh, absolutely, but even those cars are modified for rally conditions, with various safety features that aren't there in Binky.
Of course, I don't doubt that Brunning & Blackhurst could GET such features, they race both rally AND track, after all, but I don't think they could easily install them into Binky, without a LOT of further modification.

Someone decided that powering one with Getter Reactor (Or Neuroi Core, depending on factors) would be fun?

Also, how last letter ("ć")should sound? Same as middle one, "č", or similar to zz in pizza?

I think it's something like "binkatsevich", but I'm not 100% on my Serbian diacriticals. (possibly the other way around? binkachevits?)

FWIW, the only example I can think of offhand is in the name of the Serbian seismologist Mohorovičić — Wikipedia has a link to an IPA help page which specifies the first c-squiggle as the "ch" in "church", and the second as the "ch" in "cheese".

I think I just sprained my larynx.

First, I just learned what's with Moho Mine in TA.

Second, I can't hear difference between two sounds ad you described them.

Third, https://nhorus.no-ip.biz/sounds/ four possible pronouncements based on how I understood problem correctly, two_ch.mp3 is the one that should sound the same as in Mohorovičić.

TBH I don't hear a lot of difference either. I suppose it depends on whether your ear's attuned to the dulcet tones of ISO Standard Received Pronunciation (a.k.a. BBC English), or some flavour of American English.

On the gripping hand, half the time I can't figure out how to pronounce the various IPA squiggles either (see above re. sprained larynx)...

OK, for one thing, there are two ches in church, but more importantly, they're all three the same sound, I mean... aren't they? Please? Is my whole life a lie?

I took the Cyrillic spelling I used from the Wikipedia page for... I forget, someone whose last name else ends in -ačević... and a spot check of other, similarly-named individuals' pages indicates that the "-ачевић" ending isn't a typo there; so I guess you'd have to take that up with the Serbs, not me. :)

Now, why they use the Serbian version of Cyrillic in Transbelvia, that's a valid question, and one to which I don't really have an answer. :) I think it would be more sort of to the north of Romania than over by Serbia if it really existed, but, who knows.

Wasn't it rumoured that the designer of "Objekt Binkačević" was extradited from the Serbian Mini Fan Club out of self-defence? Looks like Transbelvia was the only place he tried to get into that didn't toss him right back.

Extradited? What, like he was charged with a crime by the Teesside Yesteryear Motor Club while he was a member of the Serbian Mini Fan Club, and the Serbian club forced him to go back to Middlesbrough to face trial?

Actually, that's not entirely implausible under the circumstances, though it still doesn't really address how he ended up getting asylum in Transbelvia. :)

In a random wander-through, the answer to this question just occurred to me.

After a visit to Italy on some other form of business, he had three sets of western blue jeans to trade.

No, your whole life is just in English rather than in (most dialects of) the Serbo-Croatian languages.

The first "ch" in "church" (or the "ch" in "chip", if the two "ch"s in "church" are confusing) is made by putting your tongue up against your alveolar ridge. The "ch" in "cheese" has your tongue against your gum line.

In English these two sounds are considered the same phoneme, but if you spoke Serbo-Croatian you'd distinguish them. Allophones are fun!

Right, so the short answer is they're actually different sounds, but in English, you don't care.

If you cay the two words and very carefully pay attention to how you are saying them and how they sound, there is a slight difference. At least there might be a sound difference depending on your accent¹.

The most noticeable difference to me is what way the tongue moves: With church it flexes up towards the roof of the mouth, with cheese it slightly flexes down and falls away.

1: Accent differences can result in amusing calls to the CBC about a "rural rout" being farmers fleeing and many bemused people in a newsgroup reading the statement "raze doesn't sound like raise, it sounds like rays."

If I pay attention to the tip of my tongue, I notice a difference in location - it's near the roof of my mouth for "church," near my lower front teeth for "cheese," and in between for "chip."

In terms of sound, I can't hear it; my ear isn't educated to detect the difference. Even if I deliberately force the wrong position, I don't notice anything.

Haha! I was actually about to make a small comment to the effect of "WOW that went well off topic", not that that is unusual OR wrong.

Wouldn't mind me a tyre-stuck-out-gauge, but what I REALLY want is an official "Make the NOISE!" t-shirt. Unfortunately, they're not made in proper sizes. Sadness.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-18 AT 11:14 PM (EST)

My local Subway recently installed a new credit/debit card reader at the register. It has the mildly annoying feature that there is a laser scanner mounted on the side of it, function unknown (the cashier doesn't use it to scan anything you might be buying; I guess maybe if you had a coupon or something with a bar code on it? anyway), which is situated in such a way that it directs its laser at the highly reflective stainless steel counter next to the keypad.

That isn't what this post is about, though. This post is about one of the device's other odd features, which is that it has a slot for chip-bearing credit cards in it, but it doesn't like the customer to put a card into the slot before a certain specific point in the checkout process. If you put your card in too soon, it screws the entire process up and the cashier, with much heavy sighing and rolling of eyes, must void the transaction and start over. Instead, you must wait until the device instructs you to put your card in. It does this with a screen message (INSERT CARD NOW) and a quiet, unassuming beep.

So, given the thread I'm posting this in, you probably know where the rest of the story is going. I have now developed the habit of telling the machine, "Make the noise—!" before it gets to INSERT CARD NOW.

The staff find this bemusing. I assume they have never watched Project Binky.

There is a new Q&A video out vis-a-vis Binky, where-in it is completely confirmed that no, he will never be anything other than a road-car, and no racing is foreseen to take place.

Which, you know...but, at least that's the plan.
