I dunno, I mean, the very first shot in the trailer is calling collect from the heart of the Uncanny Valley.

It's one of the problems of adapting anything drawn/animated to live-action. I initially questioned the look because it had been awhile since I read the original manga, then I did a quick Google image search and realized that that really is the rough proportion of her eyes to her face in the mangas. I still question the decision now to be that faithful to the visual look of the manga, but I'm willing to at least cut them a bit of slack because it looks like they haven't gone with the Ghost in the Shell whitewash.

The most egregious flaw I see so far? They failed to give Ido his trademark "Egon" hair-do. Those bastards! j/k

Considering the horribly weird origin of Yoko in canon, her looking just a touch off works...

I'd tend to agree. It's a little jarring at first, but arguably she SHOULD be uncanny valley.

And yes, the hair on Ito, but it was still clear who he was so that wasn't a disaster.

People keep bringing up the whitewashing of the Major, but her origin is entirely different, and part of the idea was to make her as unlike her old self as possible.

Also, it totally throws everyone ELSE in the movie under the bus. There were like three white people in that movie! And you're focusing on THEM (Hell, not even them, just THE MAJOR) while ignoring the ENTIRE REST of the cast!

The movie had its many problems. But casting ScarJo was not one of them.

Far, far worse was the use of scenes and imagery from the original animated movie that lacked the context given IN that movie and were just there to be "Look, it's just like the one from the 90s!"

I always thought that wasn't his hairdo, that was the actual shape of his actual head.

I'm cautiously hopeful. FWIW, if I were to dig out my copies of the original comic, I think I could point to actual scenes in the trailer. Can't say that with many movie adaptations.

I think the designer of the movie here really, really dropped the ball on the eyes. The problem is in the process of translating to western-style cinema from anime, you have to translate the idioms and genre-specific conventions inherent to each. In anime, huge eyes are a part of the art style, not necessarily a part of the story. I agree, Alita -is- supposed to be a bit off, but it should show in her mannerisms and speech, not necessarily her physical appearance if she's hiding her mechanical construction. It's been a very, VERY long time since I've seen any of the anime, but I really think failing to recognize and translate the cultural assumptions of the genre could tank this movie. And I think the eyes might just be the tip of the iceberg there.

I'm going to reserve judgement until I see more w/ regards to the eyes. Her proportions are a bit strange, perhaps in an effort to make her stand out.

Of course, by the time we see other Martians for context we would be WELL beyond what Hollywood would consider workable as a movie and the franchise would be resting on a mountain of corpses.

That's because animation generally does not allow for much in the way of facial expressions so artists focus on what conveys the most emotion which is usually the eyes. See also: Walt Disney, the Warner Brothers, Tex Avery, et.al. Since lack of facial expressions is usually not a problem with human beings I'm going with the distorted proportions being a failure to adapt to the medium.

In all honesty, I suspect that that was the IDEA, in fact.

As an, at least related, side note, why is it that Maggie Siff hasn't made more music, because her voice is...epic.
