"About Utena's EoJ uniform..."

What's the eight pointed star insignia signify?

From the end of that strap, a silver chain hung down halfway to the belt before curving back up to end high on the left breast at a silver ring encircling an eight-pointed crimson and scarlet star pin, cardinal points enlarged, southernmost elongated, against a transverse silver bar.

If you can divulge the in-story meaning without giving anything away, that'd be great, but what's driving me bugfuck at the moment is the fact that I swear I've seen it somewhere before outside of UF. My brain keeps telling me it's something from Battletech, but I can't focus what specifically, and I'm coming up zero searching for it on the net.

It's the, umm, Cameron Star. I think that's the name. C-something, anywho. Emblem, symbol, etc. of the Star League. Clans like it too, for the obvious reasons.

Blessed be.

(And before Gryphon gets all upset about my speaking of the Clans, I'd like to state that I've only been interested in B-tech for about two, three years. And then mostly the computer games.)

no, that's this:

What I'm thinking of is exactly like he described, two-tone red, enlarged cardinal points with the south point elongated. Still looking...

I, uh, think I made it up. It's just the logo of the International Police Organization's Space Force. Looking at that image of the Cameron Star, it does look kind of like that, if you rotated it ninety degrees clockwise and shrank down that other elongated point to be the same size as the others, and did it in two shades of red, without anything in the middle of it. The silver ring circumscribes the three regular-size cardinal points, so it goes behind the south point. The bar across the back is inspired by such things as the bar behind the star in the old US Army Air Force insignia and the bar behind the delta in the most recent rev of the 24th-century Starfleet logo in Trek (featuring what my friend Andrew calls "the Fuck You Dominion bar").

Aside from the bar-behind bit being inspired by the old Air Force logo, if it is similar to something else, the resemblance is coincidental. The Cameron Star is similar enough that it would make a good starting image to imagemod into the IPO-SF star, though, if one were so inclined...

A-ha. As much success as I'm going to get tonight without throwing this monitor out the window (multiple core dumps suck).

This is a Clan rank insignia of some sort, which would explain why you don't know about it Gryph. It's not exactly what I was thinking, but it's close--the north, east, and west points aren't really enlarged, are they? I still swear I've seen it elsewhere in BTech. I want to say it's the general insignia for a Mech pilot or something like that (think pilots wings). I'll have to rummage through my source books when I get home.

Something like that, if you shrank the northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest points somewhat, and made them in a darker shade of red than the cardinals.

That eight pointed stars are cool, nothing more. I think so, anyway.

The CFMF uses an eight-pointed star with enhanced cardinal points as a collar tab to denote titular rank of commodore (silver on duty and dress uniform, gold on flight suits). The rank pin for captain is a four-pointed star based off of the cardinal points of the eight-point star; a fleet captain (captain commanding a multi-ship force) wears an eight-pointed star with a circle cut out of the center.
