"A Top KanColle Doujin"
|
There are many of these. Some are great. Some are horrible. Some are funny. Some are tragic. (Many are stupid.) This one is my favorite. It's sweet and silly, yet it will take you for a ride on the feels train. It's about an admiral who loves and values his ships. It often makes fun of the game's mechanics. Oh yes. And the Admiral is a Shiba dog. I'm torn whether to recommend that you watch this video after you've read it, or watch it first and then see how many things about it you didn't understand become clear as you read. I did the former, but I think it might work either way. I'll leave it up to you. (Also, if you've had the kind of week I've had, you might find yourself just watching it six or eight times in a row because the song is so damn cheerful.) --G. -><- Benjamin D. To explain it further: Akebono and Ushio, at one point during WWII, exchanged places in formation because Ushio was having equipment problems. Things went straight to hell and they took it out on Akebono's crew, because they were the ship closest at the time. This spiralled into a series of situations where Akebono and her crew were put into punishment details and were tasked with doing things a Destroyer was Not Suited For. So Akebono continued to underperform. And the beatings continued. To take this ANOTHER step, the admiral from shiro's comics is called 'The Shitty Admiral' because he has a nasty expression, similar to a thug, and has a GLORIOUS talent for trolling misbehaving ship girls in just the right fashion to make them into better people. Akebono is his long term project. - Berk Watkins Student of Quantum Bogodynamics |

There is, naturally, a hell of a lot of dross to wade through in the vast field of KanColle-related MikuMikuDance videos, but I quite like this one. The choreography works nicely with the character, the model's really good, and the song is catchy as hell. --G. -><- Benjamin D. >This is a problem may have been inherited from MMD models in general, >really. Because the Vocaloids MMD was originally cooked up for have a >very distinctive 'plastic clothing' look since they very often >incorporate electronics and wearable digital displays into their >wardrobe. Well, sure, it makes sense for them, since they're virtual characters as virtual characters. In the course of my little odyssey over the last few days, though, I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... Excuse me. Ahem. Anyway, yeah. I think the best example that didn't involve a character just wearing the wrong costume (which was, in the way of the Internet, basically no costume), was a version of Suzuya who was wearing her normal outfit, only every single part of it was smooth, stiff, and highly reflective, like she was cosplaying as a Suzuya action figure. OTOH, there is a very adorable Yamato model out there whose clothes have actual fabric weave texture on them. ... I probably pay more attention to that kind of thing than I really should. And I probably shouldn't be admitting it on the Web. Oh well! As an aside, I'm very amused by the (relatively few) English comments one sees on these videos. You have the people who don't recognize the characters; the people who do recognize them, but don't know what MikuMukuDance is... and, in one really impressive instance, someone who clearly was familiar with both KanColle and Vocaloid, but couldn't... quite... put it together. That person asked, "Why does Yamato's singing voice sound like Megurine Luka?" So close. So close to understanding. (Or maybe it was a joke. It's hard to tell on the Internet. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Abyssals may be some of the most fun and original baddies I've seen in >a while. And the Oni and Princess class ones all have a ton of >character that you can see even in their combat stage forms. I'm... not universally sold on the "undead teeth monster" aesthetic they have going on, but a few of them have grown on me—Re-class, Wo-class, and Hoppo most prominent among them. As usual for me, my favorite fan portrayals of them tend to be the comedy ones, where the war (if there even is one) kind of works like the old Warner Brothers cartoon about the wolf and the sheepdog. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. The idea of Shipgirls in Valhalla got me thinking. And then I chanced upon it. There is a fanartist who is doing illustrations, mainly of the Kreigsmarine girls, as fantasy heroes. Sure, Graf Zepplin has guns. But then consider that her Carrier rigging is controlled by the control interface for a card based arcade game. (Not unlike the arcade version of Kancolle, really...) - Berk Watkins Student of Quantum Bogodynamics |

>Ah! The Royal Navy Battlecruiser HMS Indestructible. Always a risky name for a warship, but especially ironic for a battlecruiser. :) Heh, so I got curious and checked to see whether there had actually been an RN ship with that name. It appears there hasn't (the closest they got were Invincible and Indefatigable), but in the course of checking I ran across a mention of a minesweeper called HMS Wilton. She had a glass-reinforced-plastic hull, the idea being that she'd have a better chance of avoiding magnetic mines that way. (It seems to have worked, since she's now the Leigh-on-Sea Yacht Club.) One of her nicknames was HMS Indestructible as a result, although she was also known by the somewhat less reverent tag HMS Tupperware. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >The name 'Indestructible' is a one that popped up among Kancolle fans >for 'British Kongou' because that is.. actually what her name MEANS >(besides being named for Mt. Kongou): Adamant/Indestructible.(The men at the table in the smoky room look up at Jeff Goldblum as he stands panting in the doorway.) We know. Sit down. --G. :) -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-17 AT 01:57 AM (EST) >Sorry, it's been that kind of day. Well, it's entirely possible somebody didn't know, which is why I put on the smiley. I just couldn't resist the reference :) Also, it looks like there have been a few ships named HMS Adamant, although only one was a Proper Warship (the first was a fourth-rate in the late 1700s). The others were auxiliaries, a depot ship and a submarine tender, respectively. (Also also, there is of course a Defiant-class destroyer by that name in the IPSF, because -ant word. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Holy crap Leberecht Maass gives off some pretty serious Erica Hartmann >(of Strike Witches) vibes and U-511 reminds me of Eila Ilmatar >Juutilainen. Same designer. I think Shimada did all the European Axis ships in KanColle so far, in fact, which is the joke behind Princess Eugenie von Preußen in OWaW. The Italian destroyer Libeccio is basically Lucchini with a palette shift, which caused a lot of "oh come on, is he even trying?" type bitching when she came out. That said, people in the fandom take poor Lebe for a trap a lot more often than they do Erica (ugh, fandom), and any resemblance Yuu has to Eila is... um... blunted somewhat by her remodel, Ro-500. :) --G. -><- Benjamin D. >Littorio/Italia, Roma, Libeccio, Zara, Pola and Aquila were all done >by an artist going by the handle 'Ji Ji.' > >But all the Kreigsmarine ships were done by Shimada (thus the scarcity >of pants). Huh, I could have sworn he did Libeccio, thus all the grumbling about her resemblance to Lucchini. (Also thought Aquila was one of his, but that may just be because of all the art shipping her with Graf Zeppelin.) I somehow managed to forget about the battleships and cruisers momentarily, though. And Commandant Teste, I suppose, if you count Vichy France as part of the Axis, and really, why wouldn't you. Man, how could I forget Pola? How could ANYONE forget Pola? :) --G. -><- Benjamin D.
