"Q1 2024 anime cont; BRAVERN edition"
| |
So, over in General, we were talkling about anime recs and things, and I was unsure about what to think about Bravern. After episode 7, which just popped on Crunchyroll, I'm still unsure what to think about Bravern, but I think it's now less 'This show is everybody but Isami being insane' and more 'I don't know if I entirely like what the implied reasons are for this all to be happening'. ...I don't know if that paragraph made sense. But some STUFF is happening, and I'm not entirely sure if I'm okay with it on a purely conceptual level. I'm still watching though, so...it's doing something right. |

I'd been wondering if maybe that thread oughtn't be moved over here. To continue the spirit of being unsure... Astynax mentioned "Gushing Over Magical Girls" in passing, a series that I find myself with mixed feelings about. Because on the one hand, I look at a basic summary of the first episode, and I think "Wow, it's really something making me -not- interested in a show with a title like that, but you have absolutely succeeded at that dubious goal!" But on the other hand, I read a spoiler block somewhere else and it made me go, "Wait, is this like a certain other manga I once read, which would mean one of the magical girls flat-out invented the villain faction entirely in order to facilitate her own self-gratification? That could be an interesting twist, just as it was in a certain other manga!" I'm about 99% certain this is -not- actually the case. And yet, it vexes me. -IA. >I'd been wondering if maybe that thread oughtn't be moved over here. I decided not to move any threads to this one because there are a ton of threads in General that are arguably media-related, and after the hell of having to find and move all the obituaries (and then move them three more times to get them in the right order), I couldn't face it. Upon reflection, maybe if I confined myself to just the ones posted in the last year or so, that would be bearable. --G. not tonight, though. -><- Benjamin D. LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-24 AT 04:19 AM (EST) I'm liking the premise of the show, myself, because it seems like it's a show where about everybody in it (That I've seen so far) ends up unlocking kinks that they'd never have considered before, or even knew existed. Spreading the....love, let's say...is a thing that should be aspired to~ Granted, Gushing over Magical Girls could certainly go about it in a slightly less sleazy way, but...
EDIT: See also 'Chained Soldier', which is a guy ending up as the slave-slash-pokemon of a team of girl monster fighters, and as a magically enforced reward for fighting for them, they do stuff to him based on his subconscious desires - so all of the things they do to him is, as someone I watched put it 'Hey, lady, I'm as surprised as you are that I'm into this!' |

>Granted, Gushing over Magical Girls could certainly go about it in >a slightly less sleazy way, but... The thing for me is that I tend to get, at a minimum, very twitchy when it comes to material where the characters don't at least seem to be trying to respect consent. And, well, it doesn't sound like there's much caring about that at all in the series, so it would probably end up being the kind of situation that only ends in tears and fire. -IA. Eheh... that feels a little awkward to hear, since I think sometimes I'm a little more obsessive about it than is entirely healthy. (I've been known to have trouble with fiction about consenting persons roleplaying, which is about as far as it's possible to get from something involving actual harm without completely losing track of what's going on.) But stuff happened the way it did, so I've got to find a way to work with the hangups I have. -IA. (my parody fanfic written without having consumed the original material will be named 'gushing except magical girls') |

>What the FUCK? Are you talking about the Not Really Dead Person, or are you echoing Superbia's last line? Speculation about the Not Really Dead Person popped up in the comments on episode eight. Peter Eng -- Insert humorous comment here. |

>The Not Really Dead Person and general confusion over what the hell is >going on at this point. Well, the NRDP was fighting an opponent that did timey-wimey stuff. Near as I can tell, the end of the fight resulted in their being tossed backwards in time to episode 1, body created from the opponent, but mind being essentially the NRDP. Other than that, the episode was pretty straightforward "Let's go save the universe, YEAH!" stuff. Peter Eng -- Insert humorous comment here. |

I just watched the Bravern finale on Crunchyroll… They went full Gaogaigar, complete with a golden powerup, hot-blooded hair growth, and even a bit of gaolith action. (Although the VERY last battle felt more TTGL to me.) Mario |
