It occurs to me that this is awfully similar to "freemen on the land" and similar attempts to wiggle out of having to pay taxes, obey laws, etc. (For more than you probably wanted to know about that sort of thing, see RationalWiki, and if that wasn't enough, this 192-page decision by a judge who's had Quite Enough of it.) Both adopt a cargo-cult attitude to law and bureaucracy: if we construct our paperwork, spell our names, shape our guns according to exactly the right forms—then the government will be forced to leave us alone and let us do the illegal thing that we want to do.
It never works, of course, but I can understand why people feel that it should work. If only because that's how the legal system often appears to work on TV, and/or to someone who needs, but can't afford, a lawyer.
