"Childhood friends"

...So I recently learned that the same actor played Worf's father (a Russian Jew) and Ivanova's rabbi (a Russian Jew).

Which leads me to ask, in UF, did Worf and Ivanova grow up together?

Might explain some things.

It might...

OK, so I was intrigued enough by this notion that I did a bit of research and a bit of math.

According to Memory Alpha (the Star Trek wiki that restricts itself primarily to reporting on things that have appeared on screen), Worf was born in 2340 and we first see him aboard the Enterprise as a lieutenant junior grade in 2364 (age 24). He's promoted to full lieutenant in 2366 (age 26) and to lieutenant commander in 2371 (age 31). This last bit is important because he appears as a full lieutenant, and an established member of Captain Picard's command staff, in S1M7 Reflections in Transition. Picard and his team appear in that story more or less as they are in the later seasons of TNG; since each season of the show was supposed to correspond to a year in-story, he'd be in his late twenties or early thirties.

Now. Over on the Babylon 5 side, the Babylon Project wiki says Susan Ivanova was born in 2230, and we see her as first officer of Babylon 5 in its first year of operation, 2258; her birthday is in April, so she's actually 27 when the show begins, but that's neither here nor there for our purposes. In UF, B5's first year of operation was 2405 (and we first see it, and her, in Reflections, which happens in May), which would mean the UF version was born in 2377. (Which would imply that her mother must have run afoul of some Olympus-backed precursor to the Psi Corps, I should think, since the Earth Alliance wasn't even created until 2390, but that's a different matter.)

Anyway, if UF's Worf was also born in 2377, and was also 28 in 2405, that would fall quite neatly within the window. That'd mean Picard and company, as we see them in Reflections, are basically as they appeared in season 5 of TNG. Even if he was a year or two older, it'd still work out fine.

(Interestingly, that means the Galaxy-class Enterprise lasted longer in UF than in the original, since she wasn't destroyed until 2412, seven years after Reflections; in TNG canon, she only had three years left in season 5. But then a lot of things take/last longer in the UF universe.)

So yeah! It is, logistically, entirely possible that Sergei Rozhenko was Andrei Ivanov's rabbi, and that one's adopted son and the other's daughter knew each other as children - although I must say becoming a rabbi is a slightly odd thing for a warp propulsion engineer to do in his retirement, and it could put a whole different slant on aspects of Worf's childhood.

Not as odd as one might think, even if one assumes that the mindset of a warp propulsion engineer tends towards the materialistic rather than the spiritual. A rabbi isn't a priest, but a scholar and a teacher. Their roles in the religious life of a modern practicing Jew do bear a strong resemblance to that of a Protestant pastor or minister, and they are ordained, but the intellectual life is distinctly different.

It's also worth noting that in our world, Russian Jews of the 21st century tend to identify as such far more as a matter of ethnic identity rather than religious faith or cultural heritage. There's some renewal of interest in the latter components of late, which is encouraged and facilitated by the Chabad, although Sergei Roshenko is manifestly not Hasidic.

One last note: Minsk, in Belarus, is where Worf specifically mentions having grown up, and a quick Google shows Ivanova's birthplace as Saint Petersburg, but, personally? I'd revise either of these, or chalk it up to the exceedingly efficient travel of the late 24th century, for the awesomeness of Worf and Ivanova as childhood friends and latter-day drinking buddies :D.

I'm pleased that I was able to work that out without recourse to The Klingon Dictionary, based solely on pattern evaluation and a working knowledge of, well, Ivanova. :)

INT. DAY CLUB 602, STARFLEET ACADEMY
SPRING TERM, 2398

Various members of the CLASS OF 2399 are having a drink at day's end and indulging in the class's favorite pastime: ribbing Midshipman Second Class WORF for his lack of a social life. OLIVIA "SWEDE" ANDERSSON has just taken him to task for his avowed intention of skipping the Spring Formal.

WORF
I simply see no point in attending a purely social function. It is a waste of energy that could better be directed toward my studies.

SWEDE
Pffff. You sound like a Vulcan.

WORF
(muttering)
Someone here ought to.

LULARI TAMEEL
Oh, come on, Worf. Don't you ever get lonesome just working all the time?

IVANOVA
You're wasting your time, Lulari. Worf doesn't need companionship. (She rolls her eyes.) He has his honor.

WORF
(stiffly)
I would require a Klingon woman for... companionship.

IVANOVA
Hah. (She starts a long pull on her pint of Baltika No. 3.)

WORF
(deadpan)
Russians are too aggressive.

IVANOVA spits cheap replicated dealcoholated Russian beer across the table, narrowly missing SWEDE.

SWEDE
Whoa, toxic waste spill. Somebody get a hazmat team down here.

Everyone else bursts out laughing.

LULARI
Worf: 1, Ivanova: 0.

50-100 years ago, this kind of transition would have been exceedingly rare at most. But even nowadays, there are plenty of people who spend 10-20 years in some sort of profession before deciding to go back to school in a rabbinic or cantorial program and getting ordained. Additionally, at least with rabbis, many of them stick to the teaching side of things more so than the pastoral side, which is something I could totally see an engineer doing.

Plus, the whole theoretical physics side of warp propulsion engineering would lead to very interesting takes on "Let there be light!"... :)

Hmm, give me a Piety Check there Offsides :)

Back to the subject at hand, though, I always find joy when things come together like this. It has a quality of "meant to be" which is something exceedingly rare these days in fan fiction.

Thank you!

"Just Academy classmates" works even better, IMO, in that sense that others who meet two people who happen to both be from _______ frequently just assume that of course you already know each other, right? Little things like being born and raised in completely different cities aren't going to dissuade them...

Not so odd - after retiring from being a software engineer, my Dad recently decided he'd like to become a Deacon in his church, and I know a couple of priests who have held other careers before deciding to join the clergy.

A data point: technically and scientifically oriented people aren't perforce atheistic. Quite the contrary. The way my dad, a high school Physics teacher and Roman Catholic, explained it to me is that science isn't a denial of God; it's the learning about and understanding the universe God created. There's nothing to reconcile between science and faith because there is no contradiction.

Bible literalists (literal Bibleists?) are something else entirely.

I know that. I simply think it's a peculiar career change, that's all. The jobs don't seem to have much to do with each other. I'd have said the same thing about an architect who retired from that and went into cell biology.

Oh my sweet merciful Grodd, I just realized what this means.

It means that somewhere in western Russia, there is a little Klingon boy called Aleksandr, being raised by his grandparents, who idolizes, closely follows the career of, and aspires to grow up to be just like his "Aunt Susatchka".

Nah, give the kid an oslopi; it better reflects his dual, or possibly duel, heritage. Also, we need more staff fighters. For them as don't know, and there's no earthly reason why you should, the oslopi is a short staff (generally oak) with iron-shod ends that was used by the Kievan military in the 13th century. I only know it because I'm terribly, terribly dull. =]

Good lord, really? I suppose it had to happen at some point, enough mud at a wall and so forth, but yeah. Also, below is about the closest thing I can find to something like it, and it's... still not completely accurate, but w/e.

http://cloud-3.steampowered.com/ugc/613897897369679524/4B959B5DE362CEACBF4FD2BED564AC366BDFE6A2/

Also, I made a mistake. Oslopi's the plural, not the singular; that'd be oslop.

As Gryph said, it's got that Klingon Badass Spiky Thing aura about it, and it's Russian, so he can be true to all of his different heritages.

It's the kind of thing that your ISO 9000 Klingon would snark about until it took out his front teeth and left him something to talk to his friends about.

The descriptions I'm finding make it seem more like an enhanced cudgel or proto-mace than a staff, as such, but it's pretty badass and very Klingon. Not sure how it would do as a dueling weapon, but by that point (Aleksandr's only two when we first see Worf in 2405, so he won't be of an age to attend DSM until around 2417) I'm sure the Society will have had plenty experience with inappropriate choices. I mean, even in 2410 they've got people showing up who use weapons like whatever the hell that thing Shizuru has is. :)

"Uh... can I help you?"

"I've come to join your club! ... What. Why are you all laughing."

"It's not a very subtle weapon." "Somehow, Bruticus, I think subtlety would be lost on the Predacons."

"What kind of name for a weapon is oslop?"

"One marginally better than Medieval Russo-Ukrainian Hitty Thing."

Tetsudo? I'm not familiar with the term, but I'd reckon "Cossack Tanjo" would probably be a better fit, since they're both short staves similar to walking-sticks. =]

I think the intention was "tetsubo," not "tetsudo."

Unless it was "Cossack Testudo", but frankly I can't see Cossacks having the patience for a company-level mutually supportive mass shield formation vs. overhead projectile attack.

Oh, right. Yeah, that makes a lot more sense now that I've looked it up.
