"Middle Years Romulans"

So I saw this post over in the Annotations thread on the newest LOK story...

> It's ... red and gold? Not really much to go on. :) Any iconography would
> really be too small to make out at the monitor's resolution. It's not like
> they're the old Romulan warbirds with the big bird-of-prey logo on the bottom.

Thanks, Phil, for reminding me of that.

Makes me wonder, y'see, what 'movie era' Romulan ships might look like in the UF'verse. The generation between the old-style Bird of Prey and the fugly TNG stuff. I -loved- the old FASA-inspired 'bird' ships like the Bright One and Winged Defender, and more recently I've started picking up some minis of those and of the new Starfleet Battles line, which looks much better than its predecessors in the SFB'verse...

Some pictures - FASA:

I wouldn't otherwise defend the D'deridex - I mean, the whole design is just kinda what?! - and the first two linked designs seem to be okayish, allowing for the inadequate resolution and single aspect view, but...

The others? Really?

Anyway. We know that G's played Klingon Academy, which was explicitly set in the movie era, and which featured a fully playable series of Romulan ships, most of which were pretty slick. I'd expect to see those used, rather than SFB miniatures

Well, some of the Klingon Academy ships were pretty much cookie-cutter from Starfleet Command, which is "SFB: The Video Game", so...

(The 'Senator' class from Klingon Academy is basically a reimagining of the Sparrowhawk, for example.)

Sure! But KA's the source that would have studio familiarity going for it, and did not include the... ill-considered... designs you used as specifically Starfleet Battles examples.

Well, yes, because those are the official SFB miniatures.

They're... not the greatest looking, I agree. I much prefer the older FASA designs. Or the SFC redesigns, like the Senator. I actually do have a few minis of those... wish I could get more.

Gotta tell you, man, the Skyhawk reminds me of something, but it isn't a bird.

I do kinda like the Winged Defender, tho. Reminds me a lot of the Mogai class Warbird in STO, which I also thought looked pretty nifty.

Here's someone at DeviantArt's interpretation of it, in color. Looks pretty good to me (and shows off the wing angles, which the plan view doesn't).

AH yes, good old SFB....the only rulebook that the UN has declared a weapon of mass destruction, can deflect the full output of a wave motion gun firing, and can cause an eathquake if dropped..... :)

Hell, Sixth Ed was worse than the 5th.

(One book the size of 5th and then another one besides.)

Well, cap and powder, anyway. Modern ammo...still not recommended.

No, you need the complete SFB rules to stop modern ammo.

The only Romulan design I really like is the Valdore from ST: Nemesis. Which is the ONLY thing I liked from that film (It's the only movie I ever wanted my money back for after watching. The only reason I didn't was that I happened to have a free pass).

It -is- the one and only worthwhile Romulan design in all of TNG, I'll agree.

Heck, it's almost the only worthwhile design in all of TNG -period-.

Stargazer was OK. The Klingon ships weren't bad.

STO calls that the Mogai-class/type, and that's what both of my own Roms fly. Great ship.
