Sorry about the continued digression, but my brain won't let me not note that it's VERY similar to a belaying pin. Which sort of suggests that the diver in question came from a sailing vessel of some sort. Or, perhaps, that he went to one, under the surface. Though that would be less likely, if only because the pin would be in less pristine condition, as it were.
