I'm going to disagree about reading in Story Chronological order, and instead recommend publication order. (Frequently new characters and plotlines get retro-added to the story as they strike Gryphon's or the rest of the staff's interest, and IMO it's clearer what's going on if you read in context.)
Symphony of the Sword is probably the best starting place, after the Core -- it's a major step up in quality from the '90s stuff.
I happen to have Marshall McLuhanthe list you need assembled from the archives of the EPU What's New page, exactly because I wanted to read the EPU archives this way.
