"Monster Hunter"

I mean, it's called Monster Hunter, but the monsters don't really seem to require a lot of hunting, as such. They tend to be pretty obvious.

This is one of those game series I would never have the patience to play myself, but enjoy watching various holomems play. The core gameplay mechanic kind of intrigues me, since it seems to be a game built entirely around overlong boss battles without any of what Serious Gamers would consider chaff in between. :)

Yup. That provide better protection when you go and kill even nastier monsters. And of course, there are the weapons made from their remains, for killing nastier monsters in a variety of interesting ways.

There is also making armor and weapons for your cat.

I do believe you eat them, yes, after being specially prepared by a crack team of feline chefs who always sing the most adorable song ever.

They give you buffs so you can fight even stronger monsters to make weapons and clothes out of that allow you to fight stronger monsters.

Say what you will about the franchise, but by god, do they ever have their gameplay loop down.

I haven't seen the cat chefs so far in the Wilds gameplay I've watched--the Hunters seem to do their own cooking in this one--but I remember them from... World? Rise? Maybe both? I'm pretty sure I've watched holomems play both of the preceding titles...

Yeah, it was World and the Iceborne expansion for it. Rise just had Dango.

I heard someone suggest (as a joke... I think) that the switch to human chefs was because of players descending on Tokyo's cat cafes and demanding delicious platters of steaks, kebabs, etc. Prepared by the cats, of course.

Some of them are even reasonably wearable for Real Humans.

Euro cosplayer team Kamui Cosplay did Walkthroughs of their costume making for the Bone Armor, Nergigante, and Zinogre armors, as well as the Guild Marm.

...okay, well, FSVO "reasonably".

Look, all I'm saying is my cat needed a new parka. I was entirely justified in filleting those frogs. No court will convict me.

...

That said, I find the trappings of the setting fascinating. Especially the bit where the guild has to confirm where and when its hunters actually go into combat.

I dunno about you, but given using hunter weapons on humans is apparently a taboo ... this entire setting is a giant post-dystopia and I suspect it had very little to do with the actual monsters roaming the lands.
