Whoo! It does everything it needs to - fills in the implied backstory, introduces two supporting characters that I really like, develops all the characters, and gets BHS out of the armor.

Now there's only a few pieces of backstory I have no idea about, so if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sit in the corner and quietly speculate on those bits. I should be able to fill two weeks with WAGs before I get to serious speculation.

I rather liked how this installment served up the Starks' backstory inbetween portions of aftermath from the battle & fine dining epsiode. I certainly felt enlightened as to Tony and Ben Stark and didn't get that "YES YES WHATEVER ARE WE DONE YET" feeling that backstory so often gives me.

Altogether: A++ would do reading again.

Yes, I understand where you are coming from. the backstory being
interspliced like that was fun to read instead of the usual
"we know where we are going but have to slog through the parts
everybody else knows before we can get there." type of backstory.

on a related note about the backstory, even though Ben Stark
was inserted into the picture when the iron man suit
was made, to change things to fit the story... and provide the
backstory on what happened to Tony Stark and why he isn't the Iron Man

I must I literally felt quite sad to see Tony go like that, it was quite the tragedy of war :S

I too enjoyed the rehashed origin without the 'WHATEVER' aftertaste. Though what you meant by would do reading again is just plain poppycock!

I'm still "digesting", but am enjoying what I've read so far.

I peeked at the cast list at the end, and so must ask. Is this "Friday" someone we've seen before? Did the authors perhaps read a certain novel by Heinlein in his latter-days sex-on-the-brain ultra-cheesy phase?

Nothing of the sort, in fact. Friday's another import of sorts from the old Iron Man comics. She was one of the string of machine intelligences Tony Stark used to use to coordinate his activities back in the pre-"Avengers Disassembled"/Warren Ellis/What the Hell Is Going On days. In The Iron Age she's the expert system that operates StarkWire.

Gotcha. So then she's TIA's version of UF's Eve, Vision, Excel Excel, et.al, but more limited in function (so far as you've revealed to date, anyway) than the UF models? (I liked the scolding she gave to Mr. Cheong, btw <g>)

After a fashion, yeah. Friday in the comics was kind of a glorified electronic organizer; she kept Tony's appointment schedule, made excuses for him when he was off being Iron Man, and so forth. The TIA version is mainly responsible for managing the StarkWire server farm, which is a somewhat less involved job than, say, controlling the system functions of the SDF-17's FTL processing cores, yeah. The states of the art in computer science, uh, vary somewhat from universe to universe. :)

It was a good read; the story definitely has some heft to it, literarily (is that even a word?) speaking. And as others have said, very well-paced.

That the Iron Man suit was essentially kit-bashed was a little surprising. I mean, I knew what the original Iron Man looked like (basically an anthropomorphic cast-iron stove), but the mental image I got from its first appearance in TIA #1 wasn't so rough-hewn as it was described in #2. It'll be fun to see the process by which the suit gets refined in later issues.

Also, my favorite piece of dialogue:
MegaZone: "I'm going to lock you into a delta state for 48 hours"
Ben Stark: "That's what my last girlfriend in college told me."

Had me in stitches.

I give it a thumbs up.

- Zatch

Speaking as someone who has never laid eyes on an Iron Man comic in my life, the backstory was very well-presented. The tech bits were nicely futuristic, the characterisation was as always superb... all in all, a fine read in the Excellent Eyrie way. :)

Major "Snrk!" moment:

The phone at the other end rang twice before it was answered
with a crisp click and a filtered voice saying, "Operator."
"Mackie!" Nene said. "I need an exit."

But then, I have a known weakness for surprising quotes used in a completely different context.

Actually, was I found the most entertaining was the running joke of Nene's youth. It's easy to run a joke into the ground, but Gryph manages to handle it quite nicely.

Surprising quote, but your major "snrk" was maybe the one thing in this story that gave me a bit of pause.

Bad Things have happened. Nene's calling the emergency number, Mackie answers, identifying himself as "operator" and using a filtered voice. And what does Nene do? Call him by name, then ask for an "exit" from coded coordinates.

Anyone listening? Anyone want to have a data point for breaking a code? Yes, I know it would probably not be likely in story context, but still... what happened to security???

Woohoo! I like Pepper a lot better with Happy Hogan (apparently?) edited out of the pictures. Kudos to your editing skills, Mr. "Stark"!

Good to "hear" from Friday, too. I was a tad expecting her to mostly be the name of the server and not the full-on A.I. from the comics. It's good the be wrong, and I'm very glad to see her by Iron Man's side.

Mm. Don't get me wrong, now, I like ol' Hap, but in a scenario like TIA's, he and Jim Rhodes pretty much serve the same function, character-wise. If one of the two had to be left out, Rhodey made a lot more sense to be the one staying in, what with his connection to Iron Man's early adventures in Vietnam. Plus, Rhodey just seemed to fit the overall scheme of the TIA universe better. As a decorated military pilot, he has more realistically useful skills to a futuristic tech company than an ex-boxer.

And, yeah, I have to admit, Pep's just more fun without him around.

I'm not as long-time a fan of Tony as you are, so the majority of my Happy memories (not all happy Happy memories) are from post-Heroes Return. During that time he seemed to be not only the biggest generator of angst in Pepper's life, but also the biggest block between her and Tony hooking up -- which, pre-Rumiko, seemed ideal to my neo-fan eyes.

No real slam at Hap' Hogan intended, but your Pepper Potts really, really shines without him!

.

Yeah, poor ol' Happy was kind of an asshole in Volume 3.

He and Pepper started out, back in the old-timey Tales of Suspense days, as a combination of comic relief and drivers for the Angst Love Plot that all Marvel comics seemed to require back then. Pep was Tony Stark's secretary and, like all the young women working at Stark Industries, madly in love with him. Happy was a Gruff but Honest Ex-Boxer and nominally worked as Tony's chauffeur - Tony gave him a job in return for saving his life after a racing accident - but Tony usually drove himself, so Happy didn't really do much other than hang around the office and occasionally almost get killed saving Tony from the Melter or the Titanium Man or whoever.

So for quite a while they were a set-piece: Happy thought Pepper was worth getting to know, Pepper thought Happy was a punch-drunk idiot with a face like an old boot, and Tony kept angling them together, even though he was in love with Pepper, because - this was 1960s Marvel love plots in a nutshell - He Could Not Get Serious With Any Woman, for With His Heart Condition and His Dangerous Double Life He Might Die at Any Time and That Wouldn't Be Fair to Her.

Eventually Tony's efforts to set them up together worked, they ran off and got married, and Tony went on to have disastrously ill-advised relationships with deeply dubious women like Whitney "Madame Masque" Frost (the head of an organized crime family), Indries Moomji (that creepy "designed to be your dream woman" chick who worked for Obadiah Stane), and Rumiko Fujikawa (all the maturity of a Pikachu backpack with one-tenth the charm). The Hogans, meanwhile, got written out of the original book altogether sometime in the '70s and made only occasional guest appearances until Heroes Return, when Kurt Busiek had the good sense to bring them back and Joe Quesada had the Joe Quesada sense to make them idiots after Busiek left the book.

Well, most of what we know about her still has to do with what A!G has said here. Past that, it does make sense, both in the terms of a girl Friday, etc...

Nice read all in all, Ben. Looking forward to see how this continues to evolve!

   Greetings!

A very informational chapter. I'll just make a few comments on the stuff that made an impression on me.

"Nice day!"
"How the fuck do -you- know what kind of day it is?" Ben grumbled.
Tony eyed him warily, then grinned. "I'll get you some more coffee," he said.

Nothing worse than a morning person after an all-night bender.

The phone at the other end rang twice before it was answered with a crisp click and a filtered voice saying, "Operator."
"Mackie!" Nene said. "I need an exit."

That brought a smile to my face.

On the surface, it was a very crude piece of work, but when she looked more closely, her practiced eyes caught a multitude of little details that told her the truth. This armor, this... iron man... was a work of art to Sylia's eyes. It was unpolished, like a pencil sketch or the rough draft of a poem, but it had in it all the elements that would make the finished product a thing of great beauty.
...and I can't wait to read about how it'll look.

Nene Romanova, on the other hand, was slumped in a seat at the other table with her head on her folded arms in the classic "I'll just rest my eyes for a sec - zzzzzz" position.
Cute! :)

Tony shook his head and whispered ruefully, "God damn, I should've married her."
Damn good line.

"... All the seats in the gweepery taken?" he asked after a few seconds' consideration.
*snicker*

--Iron Man's assault on Wong Chu's compound and his death.--
Satisfying.

"... I'm not a kid," she said half-heartedly, but by the time she did she was alone in the room.
The running gag about Nene's age was great.

--Tony's final letter to Pepper.--
Heartbreaking.

Thank you for all your cards, emails, and file uploads of support. We here at StarkWire appreciate them all - except for that not-so-clever attempt to corrupt our user contribution database, SupaHax59838. The police will want a word with you in the morning, Mr. Cheong, to say nothing of your parents.

HAHAHAHA! You don't mess with a net.goddess!

The backstory on how the Iron Man came to be was very well done. I get the feeling on an old WWII "buddy movie" when I read it.

Now that we know the past, it's time to look to the future and see what this alliance between Stark Industires and the Knight Sabers will hold!

Until next time,

One of the bits I enjoyed was:

Stark looked disappointed. "Oh. Hum. I was kind of looking
forward to the doped-to-the-gills part. I had my heart replaced and I
don't even get a lousy Demerol drip?"

Gave me a 'I had a heart transplant and all I got was a t-shirt' type feeling. 8)

Overall it was great (as usual for EPU).

Zoner watched the door shut behind her, then turned back to
Stark and said sagely, "You better watch yourself with that one. These Japanese females are treacherous."

An awesome MegaTokyo reference-- which is appropriate, considering.

Out of idle curiosity, and since B.J. Hunnicutt shows up in UF, the UD-5 Penobscot aerodyne wouldn't happen to be named after Colonel Donald Penobscot by any chance?

No, it's named after the Penobscot Indian tribe. Dynos are the TIA era's equivalent to helicopters in most military applications, and like military choppers before them, they're named after Native American nations.

Now that there is some damn fine ficcage. Proving once again that you guys can out-plot, out-dialogue, out-action-scene, and flat-out out-write at least 75% of the folks working for Marvel and DC.

(I'd suggest that you try for a gig with the big guys, but then there'd be line editors and--worse--Suits breathing down your neck... it's probably better this way, with total creative control and no deadlines to meet.)

Specific bits:

At first, my thought was "What's the final version of the IM armor going to be?" Then it hit me that that was silly--Iron Man isn't a goal, it's a process. Onward and upward.

No matter how hard I try, I can't visualize Nene as anything but the Sonoda version. Especially with all the crossing-guard jokes. (And I want to call her "pre-Crisis Nene," but that really doesn't work. :) )

And one question remains... the Great Unanswered... are this Ben and Zoner native to this BGC world, or not...? So far, there's no hard evidence either way, and it isn't even necessarily germane to the plot... *shrugs* I suppose you'll let us in on that eventually. No rush.

   Well, that was fun :D

Most of my what I would comment has already been covered, so I'll just touch on a few things of note in no particular order.

A note on style:
To me, there's a noticably style difference in TIA than other EPU works. Its hard to put my finger on the exact term I want, but its seems more, well I don't want to say "in your face" because I'm not a marketing director for the G4 network, but its more... Hmmm. Agressive? Active? It'll bug me till I think of the right word, but the gist of it is that TIA comes off the page diffently then say, a SoS or Bacon Comics piece. Was this a conscious choice? Is it a result of the setting? Or am I reading too much into it? I'm liking it though.

Gryph & Zoner's Interaction-
It's been years since we've seen these guys on screen together beyond a sentence fragment, and I think its a consensus that we've missed them. I'm thoroughly enjoying their return. And Zoner calling it "that clunky old fucking suit" will go directly to my quote highlight reel.

>Stark looked disappointed. "Oh. Hum. I was kind of looking forward to the
>doped-to-the-gills part. I had my heart replaced and I don't even get a lousy
>Demerol drip?"
>"I could arrange one if you really want it," said Zoner sardonically.
>"I think it's an important part of the recovery experience," Stark said >piously. "See to it."

That killed me.

Tony the Machine Spirit-
I've my own suspicions here, but I'll just say that I found it interesting how the chip talked in 27' and how it talks in 32'.

Last, Zoner getting his swerve on with Sylia Stingray was pretty good. The old "get into a gunfight with mercenaries and their combat robots" works like a charm.

Nope, and I hadn't really been aware of it until you mentioned it. It might be an artifact of the setting, since the TIA universe is supposed to be more of a straight cyberpunk/near-future-conflict setting, but I couldn't really tell you.

Less 'domestic', perhaps? People in UF (outside of, say, the Exile stories or parts of Warriors of the Outer Rim) tend to live in comfortable, homey places, cook their own dinners, shovel the snow off the garden path, banter with their housemates, etc. In TIA, Gryphon and Zoner are 'in transit', as it were, and while the Knight Sabres presumably have places to go home to, I'd guess they pretty much just sleep there (or hack there all night long, in Nene's case). This adds to the 'cyberpunk' feel alluded to above by Gryphon (I tend to find parallels to Shadowrun, because it's my main experience of cyberpunk).

Being thoroughly unfamiliar with Iron Man was probably an advantage for me, because the background wasn't a re-hash at all. I found it very interesting, in fact - very easy to visualize, and I like the concept of the Iron Man suit being a mixture of high-technology and old-fashioned steel and rivets.

Overall, I enjoyed this more than the first chapter of TIA, probably because the characters (and the interactions between the different groups) are now more fleshed out.
