I think the way Isami's responding is more a result of how the US government treated him than the business of being The Only One Who Can Ride The Giant Robot. If he'd been treated like most shonen heroes are treated, that would be one thing. He was really into it at the end of episode one.

But...well, I'd guess that Shinji Ikari had it worse in his lifetime of suffering, but for single-episode dumping on a main character, I'd say that Isami's ahead.
