"OWaW 02"

On track for tomorrow, Godzilla willing and the creek don't rise. Here's a snippet.

"You should thank Perrine when you get a chance. Trude, too. You've got a pint of blood from each of them roaming around in you now."

Gryphon opened his eyes to regard her, then grinned slightly. "Essences of Gallia and Karlsland, eh? That explains why I feel a strange urge to attack myself without provocation, preferably in a way that violates Belgican neutrality."

Mio snorted, a little guiltily, and said, "That's awful."

"Yeah, true. And not even fair," he admitted. "I mean, that only happened once so far in this timeline, not three times."

Also, three times? I admit my world history is rather rusty, so I might be well off-base, but did one of those times kick off one of the eternally-unseen Earth world-wars?

The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71; World War I; World War II. In the Strike Witches chronology, the World Wars were coalition fights against the Neuroi, so only the first happened something as it did in real life.

(And that's only up to 1946 - it's entirely possible that it happened again, perhaps more than once, between 1946 and 2410, but Gryphon's only speaking of events up to the timeframe he's currently in.)

I forget where I read this, probably a newspaper commemoration of V-E day circa 2010, but it was observed that the period between WWII and now (as of the article) was the longest interval without an invading army crossing the Rhine ... since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. I'm not sure what reference point they were using for that, though, and of course most of those invasions did not go through (what is now) Belgium.

Ahhh, ok. I thought that's what was meant by his comments, but haven't really had much exposure to the Franco-Prussian war. I am enlightened, thank you!

   'She'll adapt - or she'll have a psychotic episode.'

All too true, it seems.

And Lucchini and Mio's first meeting is all too entertaining :)

Think that's my one quibble so far, I'd have expected someone that relentlessly straight laced to pull Minna or Mio aside to ask, not in so many words, what the hell's going on here rather than make a scene like that.

Mio does make a good distaff version of Patton, her boots clearly aren't just made for walking.

I suspect this is something that's been building for a while. It probably wasn't helped that she was already a little off balance after the previous days events, where she was dropped in a strange mans lap, the old crew proceeded to make a game out of undressing him, and then he fell down and nearly died.

Well, as M_D notes, it's sort of the culmination of a longer process. Shizuka's been having trouble adapting to the way the 501st does things for a while now. She was already off-balance - the man falling from the sky and the veterans being inexplicably chummy with him was just the tipping point.

That, and if she'd gone all Saavik-in-Star Trek II and written Minna a grumpy memo endeavoring to remind her of the regs against fraternizing with civilians, it wouldn't have been as interesting. :)

>Mio does make a good distaff version of Patton, her boots clearly

Indeed, a number of Patton's lines from the movie fit pretty easily into her mouth circa 1943.

"Minna, in about fifteen minutes we're going to start turning these girls into fanatics. Razors. They'll lose their fear of the Neuroi. I only hope they never lose their fear of me."

(Sorry, Mio, they did. On the other hand, it turns out Wuv may be a better motivator anyway. :)

"You know, Mio, sometimes the girls don't know when you're acting."

"It's not important for them to know. It's only important for me to know."

I recommend 5-7 days bed rest and follow-up magic sessions as needed to complete the internal repairs.

So, 2-3 days for Gryphon, assuming enough calories? I'm guessing that Doc is basing her estimates on a normal human.

Yeah, it's not clear that any of them knows the full extent of his abilities (his age/lifespan, for instance), but Yoshika being one of the new kids, she hasn't seen the way he bounces back from injuries before. (I would assume the veterans have - he can't have operated with them for months in '43 without getting racked up a few times, and they all saw that he survived the Hell Patrol without witchcraft to sustain him, which is not something your average muggle could pull off.) Note, for instance, that she thinks he's about 30.

As it is, he should be fine Wednesday morning. Plenty of sleep, a tub of ice cream, job's a good'un. If nothing else, we've got to get on to bits of the story that don't involve him being mostly asleep. :)

That's a great way to start my weekend.

Something I've liked about stories here is how they take series I have zero interest in normally and use them to create some of my all time favorite stories. Bravo, sir!

Yup, same here. And bravo, also.

Also also: Lucchini is unspeakably adorable in the "I was sleeping" segment. Alas, I cannot agree with her on the subject of octopus (or any other cephalopods).

I'd like to accept credit for that, but I have to admit that Lucchini is basically always adorable. :)

You just reminded me of an annotation I forgot to add, though.

>Alas, I cannot agree with her on the subject of

I like a bit of calamari now and again, but it has to be breaded and fried. Then again, almost anything is edible if it's breaded and fried.

At least she wasn't advocating live octopus as a foodstuff. That's not just disgusting, it's dangerous. And the mere thought would probably have made Shirley hurl.

--G.
"No, Shirley! Don't hurl! 'Cause if you hurl, I'm gonna spew. And if I blow chunks, someone else is gonna honk - you could start a retroperistaltic chain reaction."
