"XCOM 2 character pools"

Hey gang, got some pool characters put together for XCOM 2, just for giggles.

First up: the Jaeger Team, re-creations of my Pacific Rim-based squad from the first game.

Grenadier Irina "Cherno" Kuznetsova (RUS)

Specialist Kazumi "Coyote" Kato (JPN)

Specialist Hiromi "Tacit Ronin" Kato (JPN)

Sharpshooter Ping "Typhoon" Shen (CHN)

Ranger Zoe "Eureka" Walker (AUS)

Ranger Jenny "Gipsy" d'Angers (USA)

Note that evidently, if you put premade characters into the game and they end up dropping as random recruits, the game ignores the specializations you chose for them in the character generator when they get promoted to Squaddie and picks one randomly instead. I find this a bit irksome—why let me set it if you're just going to ignore it?—but it could be that I'm Doing It Wrong.

I've also put together a package of soldiers based on characters from NXE, because why not.

Ranger Asuka "Grendel" Langley (DEU)

Surprisingly close to my mental image, considering she's from a canned character generator in a completely different native art style! Also available with Evangelion 3.33 eyepatch.

Ranger Derek "DJ" Croft (GBR)

Psi Operative Jon "Abaddon" Ellison (USA)

Sharpshooter Rei "Zero" Ayanami (JPN)

(Yeah, I know Rei in NXE is actually an American, but.)

Specialist Shinji "Comeback" Ikari (JPN)

He's slightly terrifying with his dad's beard.

Specialist San "Version 3" Ayanami (JPN)

Grenadier Marina "Nuke" Kirishatova (RUS)

There is naturally no Soviet Union in XCOM 2.

Grenadier Kenneth "K" Stanfield (USA)

Psi Operative Jim "J" Edwards (USA)

Specialist Otto "Kontrol" Keller (DEU)

Just to bring it full circle, Otto was originally a UFO: Enemy Unknown character before he found himself in NXE. :)

Enjoy!

So when I made these characters, as any of you who may have downloaded the pools and used them will have noticed, I didn't bother setting their bios. This means when the game picks them up, it randomly assigns them one of the same canned ones that the regular RNG troopers get.

I am amused to note that, in the game I dropped them into, the random bio Asuka got says Bradford isn't 100% sure, but he thinks she might have escaped from a German supermax prison.

Also, Shinji's a Grenadier in that game, which is hilarious. But then the boy has bulked up some. He's clearly been hitting the weight room.

And then that didn't work either, because she wasn't the drop from a "bust somebody out" mission, she just appeared in the starting roster. :)

I noticed that as well when I filled my Pool with 'imports' of my City of... girls. Have a minor suspicion that clearing the 'Can appear as a soldier' check box on their Pool spreadsheet might help... or it might just send them to the 'monthly recruit from HQ'. Haven't started a new game yet to see.

He wouldn't be Jon if he didn't have shitty luck. :)

(That figure didn't reflect his real contribution; he did a lot of softening up guys with more than 3 health in those missions, but someone else got most of the kills. He'd set 'em up, Rei or DJ would knock 'em down.)

Also, I will note that in the missions since that screenshot was taken, Shinji has proven to be absolutely lethal in clutch situations... with his sidearm. Boy's a god damn gunslinger. You move anywhere anyone in the squad can see you while he's on pistol overwatch, you die. In one mission he critted a full-health Sectoid from a rooftop half a block away. It was friggin' beautiful.

It's a toss-up, in my current play so far, which has been the most satisfying single moment: that one, the one where the Stun Lancer learned too late that maybe charging a man with a chaingun wasn't a great plan, or the time Asuka wiped out an entire reinforcement squad she couldn't see with a blind grenade throw on their in-turn, because they hadn't bothered to move from where the transport dropped them in the cutscene.

"Man alive, these things are stupid."
-Light cruiser Tenryū

--G.
When she threw the grenade, Asuka shouted, "Hier! Fangen Sie!" - which I think is a very polite way of saying, "Here! Catch!" Nice touch.

Pistols are hilariously awesome. My main sharpshooter and her hand cannon has the highest kill rate of the entire game (As I approach what I suspect is the endgame, she's got over a hundred kills). This includes entire squads taken out by crit hits and her 'shoot everything in sight' power, and one especially memorable case where she soloed a Sectopod.

And as a side bonus, the mass effect camo pattern mod I got means her plasma pistol has fancy Quarian scrollwork on it too.

I remember a Stun Lancer that charged at my main Ranger. Who auto-attacks anyone that gets in melee range. That went very differently to what the ADVENT mook was expecting :)

Be very, very careful with that Ranger build. If you get within melee range of a Muton, they automatically counter-attack. Which, er. Yikes.

Also, just saying for Gryphon's benefit: Bluescreen rounds on your pistol Sharpshooter is very much the way forward. You can fire five pistol shots in one turn. Against a Sectopod that's a minimum of 15 damage. Minimum. And that's only if you don't bother to shred the thing's armour with an Acid Bomb or a Grenadier with Shredder and Holo-Targeting. =]

Please, they'd need to last long enough for my Ranger to get in close to them. Mutons... did not cover themselves in glory on my current play-through.

Becky's carrying AP ammo, actually. Great for both Sectopods and Gatekeepers. Don't bother shredding the armour, just ignore it and kill what's hiding behind it.

One of my favorite moments was when a Stun Lancer charged my Ranger (Duncan "Highlander" MacLeod) who promptly not only struck first, but stunned the guy.
and then did it AGAIN to the Andromedon who charged in from his flank.

Monday, April 23, 2035
ADVENT blacksite, New Mexico

Jon stood over the rapidly expiring form of a freshly skulljacked ADVENT Elite Officer, resolutely ignoring both the spasmodic twitching of the dying enemy soldier and the steadily growing pool of yellow-orange blood at his feet, and touched his comm earpiece.

"Avenger, this is Menace 1-9," he reported, allowing no trace of the lingering distaste he felt for what he'd just had to do into his voice. "ADVENT network intrusion successful. Uploading the data to you now."

"Copy, Menace 1-9," Central Officer Bradford's voice replied in the squad's ears. "Upload confirmed. Looks good."

San Ayanami, unconcerned by the twitching or the blood, sauntered over and hunkered down to take a closer look at the jagged wound in the alien-human hybrid's head with bright, curious eyes. Then, looking up at Jon, she said,

"I guess there's only one word for this guy..."

Grinning, she took a pair of sunglasses from the top pocket of her utility harness, shook them open with a negligent flick of her wrist, and slid them on before completing her thought:

"... Terminal."

"Yeeeaaaaahh!" chipped in Shinji over the radio from his perch atop the nearby outbuilding.

Apart from a muffled snort from DJ and a silent facepalm from Asuka, no one on the squad dignified the remark with a response. (Rei ostentatiously declined to even look at her sister.) After a moment of faintly crackling dead air, Bradford came back on:

"Menace Squad, Commander says you're all fired."

I'm really, *really* loving the character pool concept, even though some of its implementation is frustrating. Like the already-mentioned-in-this-thread bit about not getting the specialization you, er, specified.

I seem to have been in luck before now, in that I *did*, but last night my designated Sharpshooter that I recruited turned into a Grenadier, which is going to totally fuck with their backstory. Clearly I need to come up with some suitable event to explain this. "I used ta be ah snipah... 'til that damn Muton took ah bite out ah mah arm..."

Anyway!

I understand why it's not available, and probably never will be even with mods, but I find myself wanting a body type selector. And not *only* because I want to recreate the TF2 cast in XCOM. (That's only, like, 40% of my reason, I swear!)

Also, it would be very, very nice if the character creator allowed you to specify two sets of visuals: one 'vanilla', and one with modded stuff. Because right now it goes *completely* sideways if you send a modded character over to a friend without those same mods.

Steam likes Marishka so much, it put her on the cover.

This isn't the most current version of the NXE squad, but it's pretty near. Since this shot was taken I've completed research on the Beam Cannon for DJ and Warden Armor for about half of the gang (Asuka and DJ are still wearing their Exosuits and Shinji his Spider suit at present).

I just realized what this game, even more so than the previous one, reminds me of in terms of its pacing:

Skies of Arcadia.

It perfectly replicates that sensation of All I want, all I want is to get to where I'm trying to go and complete the task I'm trying to—

—or I could fight another four Loopers. That's also an option.

It's not XCOM 2, but the conversation reminded me that I had not played Enemy Within yet. One of my initial recruits was an Australian named Amy Williams. Naturally, the next male Aussie that joined the roster got renamed to Rory Pond. Squaddie Williams hasn't earned her call sign yet (It's only been a few days), but Sergeant Pond is known as "Centurion." Unfortunately, he ended up a sniper, instead of support, so no Dr. Rory here, just a disturbingly accurate shot with a big bore rifle. Exalt learned that the Centurion was not to be fucked with on his home turf Down Under. The rooftop sniper duel was especially telling, even after all of his available cover was removed by a grenade.

Amy, perhaps unsurprisingly, decided that the life of a Heavy was the life for her. I keep hearing Karen Gillian shouting "Cry some more!" in her Inverness accent.

Yes, I know that they're both British, but the UK took its ball and went home in the first month of the game, so I figure that Marines Williams and Pond figured that Pommyland was for the birds and moved south, or something.

Heh, which tangentially reminds me of:

"God, this is like Enemy at the Gates. 'One man has the rifle. One man has the bullets.'"
- one of the guys running the Yogscast UFO: Enemy Unknown let's-play, remarking on the psychotic ammunition micromanagement required in the original game, and how it can occasionally lead to logistical cock-ups on the Skyranger

"Get ready for a li'l surprise!"

(OK, so that's something Grenadiers say in XCOM 2, but still. :)

Yeah. Just picked it up last week(ish) myself cause between used and 2 I was able to get a copy for like $10. 90% sure I'm at the endgame myself even though I haven't officially finished it yet because all thats left to do is * redacted just in case someone somewhere somehow might get spoiled * Only reason I haven't is because I'm trying to farm enough meld for the few remaining achievements. (like fielding a fully genmod'd trooper or a fully upgraded MEC)

Achievement unlocked: "G'Day Mate!" ;D

But I was surprised by the level of customization one had even in 1. Most often I didnt customize them that much till I had something like a hook.
Like Farrah "Faucet" Kohler, Marvin "Martian" Barnes, or Lilly "Boots" Hill. The Towel (Dont panic when people start dieing) or Ducken (+Def in cover) and so on

Of COURSE you wernt
expecting it!

In the original and Terror From The Deep, when my group of friends first discovered the games, the initial player was experiencing some serious losses in his squads. On a lark, he began customizing the names, removing anything resembling an actual name and replacing it with something descriptive and less-than-flattering. Imagine his surprise when Deadmeat, Bugbait, Bodybag, etc., all began coming home with no losses.

Fiddling around with my character settings, I've realized that there was a thing I did in the first game that, for whatever reason, I don't do in the new one. In the first game, I color-coded my soldiers by class. Supports were white, Assaults red, Heavies safety orange (because explosives, I guess), and Snipers black. Also, Snipers and Assaults wore ballcaps (the latter with shades and headphones), while Supports sported a beret and Heavies favored the beanie-goggles-and-headphones combo.

... Yeah, I don't know either, I just did it. :)

In the new game, I seem to be color-coding them mostly individually, but then my primary playthrough is with the NXE squad, and they all had personal color schemes already.
