12. "RE: Gun of the Week: Winchester 94"

So, had an interesting and terrifying experience with a model 94 today. Was out at 'the range' (a gravel pit with a backstop), training a friend of mine on the Remington 870. One of the folks in our group made friends with the guys next door, and we got to take a tour through their arsenal. FN p90, Uzi, HK in 7.65.. fun stuff. And a Winchester model '94. Which proceeded to explosively lose cartridge containment on the first trigger pull, peppering my friend's face with brass shrapnel. Seven hits bad enough to draw blood, one of which I'd characterize as 'moderate' - bad enough to have blood literally flowing out of the hole in his forehead skin. First aid was easy squeezy by the book, and he's fine now. No damage to hands or eyeballs. So what the hell happened here? As near as I can figure, the cartridge failed spectacularily, but I'm astounded that the action allowed brass to escape out and up. I'm not asking for gunsmith advice here, or problem-solving. The horse is fled, and the wench is in another country. I'm just curious if the folks here have any thoughts on a failure mode I've never seen before or heard about. |
