Well, I guess it's not really a surprise that it was jammed if it stayed back in the first place—if the bolt was blown open but the lever didn't move, everything inside must be wrecked. Which is impressive when you consider that one of the things the 94's action is known for is its strength...
I wonder if maybe you got a double-charged cartridge or something. It's unusual, but it happens (a particular danger with handloads), and there aren't a lot of actions that will stand up to something like that.

Indeed. I'll always wonder.

Yeow. I almost said something like, "And now your friend knows why we wear safety glasses," but decided it would be unwarrantedly pompous. Knowing now that he wasn't wearing any, not so sure about the unwarranted part.
When I first started going to the indoor range I sometimes use downstate, I had to convince them that my prescription safety glasses were fully as up to the challenge as the little jobbies they sell. "Look, these are ANSI whatever spec industrial safety glasses, I bought them when I worked in a machine shop. They're meant to protect the wearer's eyes from lathe accident shrapnel and such. They will meet or exceed any standard those things are built for, I promise you."
