London, England
Earth, Earth Alliance

Nanami Kiryuu felt slightly silly, sitting in a tall-backed executive desk chair dead-center in an otherwise empty and featureless floor of a vacant office building. She knew it was good theater; it'd make a powerful impression on the people who were supposed to come and see her shortly. The phase before they arrived, though, there was something mildly ridiculous about that. She supposed she could at least have pretended she was working on something if she'd had a desk, but that would have defeated part of the purpose.

She opened one of the files on the datapad she held (her only prop for the little drama she was to play out) and read it again to kill time while she waited. The nature of the business was such that she couldn't be sure exactly when her guests would arrive.

From the Journal of Mr John R. Carruthers
10 May 1941

For nearly six decades now I have been the custodian of a terrible secret. I have kept it faithfully and willingly, for the good of all concerned. It does not weigh on me, but I know there will soon come a time when I can no longer carry it. Even if the Germans don't manage to do for me, the White Plague will, soon enough.

If mine were an ordinary terrible secret, I would be perfectly willing to take it with me to the grave, but it is not. In fact it absolutely must not be allowed to die with me. For all that it must remain hidden now, there will just as surely come a day when it must be known. It is for this reason that I set pen to paper today and, for the first time, make a permanent record of the extraordinary events I witnessed in the winter of 1884...

Oh man.

Oh man.

Nanami Kiryuu and weird occult action? Possibly even going full urban fantasy on us? Two of my most favorite things?

I must have been very good this week to deserve this!

Hmm. Winter of 1884, eh? Probably a coincidence, but I do wonder if Atomic Robo and Helsingard are involved in some way.

Hearty agreement, on most, though admittedly Nanami isn't quite one of my favorite things; she's grown on me in the UF-context, but not really further, since here is the only place I know her. The journal bit is really neat, not to mention efficacious; though I struggle to call to mind that to which it might refer, nonetheless it is quite clearly in the Lovecraftian vein, deliberately, of course, and set the mood for me very well indeed. I await it eagerly.

Remembering a few things about the last time Nanami's next assignment was mentioned?

I think we're about to meet a very interesting take on some old(?) friends.

This should be fun.

First Dates and Firefights, in the after-credits scene. Touga is apparently unsuitable for this recovery, and it doesn't require time travel. They seek two people.

I'm a sucker for Vastra and Jenny at the best of times, so the story of how they met (and how this version mostly missed out on VIctorian London) was definately a welcome read. Although their ending up in Akios hands is certainly worrying. I wonder just what he's told them....

As a side note, the mental image of a teenage Vastra in a school uniform gave me a brief 'Lost In Cleveland' moment.

   Agreed, this is intriguing.

Incidentally, has anyone here managed to follow the new Who series? It's... a bit different. And everyone's favourite cute lizard girl and Victorian ninja girl turn up in the first episode...

I'm unfamiliar with all these characters (except, of course, Nanami), having stopped watching New Who quite some time ago (right after Donna was introduced, IIRC) -- is Strax also from there? That was the only thing that threw me for a loop.

I liked the atmospherics of the Victorian-period setting. It's got that "well, of course they found Weird Shit while digging the Underground" vibe that makes for the best cryptohistory.

Given just how unexplained the Fleet of Fog is according to H2G2 (inaccurate as that may be), I have to wonder whether the item Miss James is offering really is the item the Castellan told Nanami to look out for.

Yes, Strax (formerly Commander Strax) is from the same story arc as Vastra and Jenny. He's a Sontaran battlefield nurse (well, they would have no other kind, would they). Canonically, he evidently owed the Doctor a solid, or possibly had just concluded that his kung fu was best; it's ambiguous. He gets dragged into the adventure, anyway, and goes home with Vastra and Jenny to Victorian London at the end instead of back to his own time. Here, the Doctor isn't involved and they're meeting for the first time in... wherever that last scene takes place.

Well, even if it isn't, she's likely to be pretty pleased with it.

That was awesome!

Vestra and Jenny are two of my favorite characters, and it looks as if they'll get to ding Akio's pride a bit, which is always nice to see. Also, more girls with swords.

I really liked that Jenny took the time to ask questions, instead of just making the assumption that Vestra was unquestionably an enemy. And likewise that Vestra actually sought to communicate despite having been attacked in the very recent past and still injured.

I have to admit, I was very excited that this piece had nothing to do with Diqiu. I like your version of Korra, (the Sato kids, the Air Benders) but it's just been a lot of focus there lately. The setting is okay, but the background bits just don't catch my interest.

And, really, Nall needs to get the hell over it. Whiny, moody Nall might be story enhancing to some, but isn't exactly entertaining.

Well, that and I like the Corwin/Anthy/Utena family unit thing. I like the AoN shows, the Valiant cruises, the Asgard side-trips, and the New Avalon/EoJ/CSI:NA pieces. All of that is far more interesting than Diqiu, save for those characters above.

So, yeah, kudos for the departure.

Hopefully, you'll stay with this for a bit. Maybe work in Rose and Don Griffin in some way. Maybe work that dialogue fragment of Wakaba's in somehow. Maybe have Saionji make some contact with the Duelists. I do have hope that this will lead to Saionji and Mia dismantling whatever the hell Akio has going. Preferably, just before someone, and I'm not terribly picky here, puts a firearm to his spine and relocates it in a ballistic and final manner.

I know, keep wishing.

Nicely done.

Actually, while I disagree with you about the Diqiu stuff, I am hoping to see if Vastra and Saionji meet up. Even if she doesn't exactly pick "his side" in this whole mess, she's a VERY perceptive young woman.

I suspect she's going to figure things out in Oriphos much faster than Akio or his lieutenants would like.

While I quite enjoy the Legacy of Korra works, this non-Diqiu (can't remember the diacriticals) piece is a delightful palate cleanser that will allow me to appreciate the next LoK thing all the more. Legacy of Korra hadn't reached saturation (the point where you go "Man, my most favourite thing again? This sucks."), but it was starting to approach it.

I understand you have a bit of the forthcoming plot invested in the Diqiu bits. And as I've said before, I like pretty much everything you've written for the last 15-20 years or so. I'm just not a fan of the background pieces for Diqiu/the Mission to Yue. You only can write so much, so you write what interests you. I just don't share that interest in this setting.

So it was refreshing that Diqiu was not a factor in this one.

I find this comment far more amusing then I should, and not in a nice way.

Anyhow, while Vastra and Jenny are at a bit of a disadvantage right now, I suspect Akio hasn't quite grasped just how perceptive the pair of them are.

Glad to be of service.

I cannot help the fact that Nall pouting like a twelve-year-old girl irritates me. The stories he is in have consistently built his character and drawn him as a person aware of who and what he is and his place in the current scheme of things. So, yes, some self-examination may be due. And, yes, some self-reflection will allow him to correct/examine/accept some heretofore unnoticed weak points in his psychological framework due to being raised in Midgard alongside Corwin instead of in his native realm.

That said, Nax was a bully, a killer, and a black mark on the family name. Nall killed him not for sport, but to defend himself and Umi. It's an out-of-character reason (my opinion) for Nall to angst. Nax had it coming, practically goaded Nall into it, and if the roles were reversed, any reader of the story knows Nax would have neither hesitated nor damned the waste of it all.

Given that at least two weeks have elapsed and he's still awkward as hell around Corwin, of all people. Get actual help from some source (Corwin offered!) and work it out. My statement stands, might be story enhancing to some, but isn't exactly entertaining.

Your points would be valid... if Nall had killed anyone before. I can't remember him doing it, though I'm more than willing to be proven wrong about it. I'm given to understand that when you kill a person for the first time, you're shaken up by it. You retreat into yourself a little to examine who you are in this new, terrifying context. You are a killer. Doesn't matter how bad the other person was, at least at first. You are a killer. It is a life-changing event, and coming to terms with it takes time.

If that's "whining like a twelve-year-old girl" to you, then... well, it is. I can't make you change your mind. What I can do is say, not without justification, that it makes you sound adolescent. It makes you sound as if you think killing someone, killing anyone, is the easy thing to do. Maybe that's not what you meant, but it's sure as buggery what it sounded like to me.

Well, he helped Umi kill Touga, but that doesn't quite count I don't think because a) Umi did most of the 'work', with Nall just helping, b) it's not like it particularly inconvenienced Touga for any length of time.

>Insert shit joke attempting to lighten the mood here.

"Touga, you should really try to make something of your new life. Next time, try to get the opponent to jam their sword on your ribs, so you're an inconvenience for at least 10 seconds."

"This is probably a stupid question, but . . ."

You are entirely correct. As I said, story enhancing but not entertaining.

Hell,if I wanted reality would I be reading a space opera? I think not.

>Hell,if I wanted reality would I be reading a space opera? I think

Heaven forfend that characters be realistic in space opera. They're just cartoons, right? Pointless stock characters with no growth and no change even over more than twenty years in-story, making the journey from childhood to adulthood alongside their best friends, that's what space opera is all about.

Realistic characters in outlandish situations. That's what science fiction is, or at least it's what it is at its best. I can't make you not have a problem with that, but I can disagree with you. So I will.

>'Tis what I deserve for de-lurking.

Yes.

Yes it is.

Well, it is if what you're de-lurking to say is really fucking stupid.

I thought I was expressing an opinion in a forum where that was not only allowed but anticipated and encouraged. I've made no personal attacks, and in fact, have been complementary in nearly all my remarks. If anyone should call me out, wouldn't it be Ben?

But thank you for so politely showing me my error.

Oh, that wasn't a compliment. As someone that quite likes the fact that Nall is getting some story time that isn't just his brilliant smartassery, and involves him considering his life and trying to grow from it, your attitude of 'that's boring, Harden the Fuck Up!' is HILARIOUS.

And I did not take it as a compliment.

You misunderstand me, I was reading a Space Opera and responded as such.

As to the 'that's boring, Harden the Fuck Up!', those are your words, not mine. Seeking distance to reflect, I get that. Pulling the disappearing act on the closest thing he has to a brother and then trying to fob him off when he makes the effort to ask what is wrong and what he can do? I thought more highly of Nall than that. I just thought it widely out of his character to push Corwin away.

But, hey, you argue this stuff with Ben and it's his story. I'm just a nobody fan.

Well, let's not be dramatic about it. You're just not at the end of the arc yet, is all.

Of course, you will have to come with us back to Dìqiú to get it, since that's where it's taking place. :)

So, I was rereading this again, because I do enjoy watching the Jenny/Vastra show, especially when Jenny is winning. I found myself wondering, just where does a match girl get her hands on a katana? Not to mention a reputation at this sort of thing.

That was awesome. I like getting to see those three, I had no idea that would be who Nanami was picking up. No wonder Touga would be all wrong for that. XD I'm jus imagining that encounter and.... Hilarious. Anyway- great work as always.

>Anyway- great work as always.

Yeah, Touga is a perfect example of the...degeneration, the imperfection, inherent in the process of becoming a demon. (A very In Nomine concept, in fact.) Not that he's an inveterate lech and misogynistic womanizer--he always was that--but his Aura of Smooth has been warped. Women see right through him now, and the only ones who sleep with him are students sleeping their way to the top, I would imagine. He thinks he's as good at this as Akio, and Akio can't help but snicker at him behind closed doors. Saionji expressed it perfectly when he said Touga used to have such potential.

Nanami's transformation is a great deal more tragic, of course, but it all follows a theme. The fact that despite everything she's suffered, her competence is still intact as well as her sense of right and wrong is what makes her an interesting character, rather than the one-dimensional caricature Akio wanted. (Yes, he says she's playing into his hands. And she could be. But did he plan for her to come out this way, though? I highly doubt that.)

As for including Jenny and Vastra, I love those two. Their quietly gleeful moments stomping on Victorian social norms never fails to make me laugh. The inspiring moment for Jenny to me is a scene in The Crimson Horror where she whips off the servant's dress and has on a Victorian version of commando gear underneath. (Pretty sure this is what she's wearing in this piece.)

Can't wait to see where this goes! It will be interesting to see their courtship covered in a way it never can be on the show. (Also, anything that smacks of magic always ends up being technology. Great to see this being subverted.)

The Doctor's always been a firm believer that magic is simply sufficiently advanced technology. If I remember right, it's been noted that his UF counterpart tries to believe that, but struggles with the fact there's magic out there that the Time Lords simply can't understand :)
