I love it. I'm getting a really weird vibe from it, though; kinda like if the backstory to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was played for laughs. All these completely disparate personalities held together by a long-suffering but still vaguely sane captain.

Well, you know, making wildly incompatible diversity work is kind of a Federation thing. :

Mind you, I will own that there are certain exercises in deliberate wackiness here. I never like Star Trek when it tries to take itself too seriously. In particular, you will note that Cosmonaut's Former Borg officer is dressed - in fact, she's wearing a boiler suit; I believe this bucks a trend. Also, if there were a way for me to depict Dr. K'Eyra with blood up to her elbows, I would totally go there. :)

Given the way that Cosmonaut acquired his command and started accumulating his crew, I believe the two options he and his officers had were "try too hard" or "develop a certain devotion to eccentricity", and plainly they've gone for the latter. In earlier eras this would probably not have been tolerated by the brass, but they do usually get the job on, and (as the game's setting is constantly reminding us to justify the rather extravagant amount of combat happening) there is a war on.

Oh, jeez... now you've got me thinking about purchasing this game and getting a crew together for the sole purpose of making the most completely incompetent bridge crew in the history of Starfleet. Hell, I'd even be tempted to call the ship the USS Troutbridge...

The more I think about it, the weirder it is. "Oh, no... I can't play the MMO based on the great white hope for the future; all shiny frisbee battles are denied me. I shall play a game about a child trying to barrel his way through a series of underground labyrinths and not be stabbed to death by his slavering God-addicted mother, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, flies, exploding flies, zombies, mobile brains, a fallen angel, a trickster demon, the headless horseman, the seven deadly sins, a creature living in a pile of offal, something that pisses everywhere, his own clones, his own demonically-enhanced clones, slavering worm beasts, and Satan himself. FUN!"

Damnit, please tell me that uniform top isn't a "pay for it" option in the tailoring.

(Yes, I play. No, I'm not planning on spending any real-world cash there. Yes, my username is the same over there, albeit all lower case. No, I'm already in a fleet, called Taskforce Tamerlane, which seems to be made up of nothing but Trek fanfiction writers.)

Well, I could, but I'd be lying, since that's the Jupiter 5 jacket (to be had in the option pack of that name, along with those fancy trousers and some other stuff).

Anyway, isn't pretty much everything interesting? It's how they make their money now that they've stopped charging people to play the game. The pay-for-shinies model, for whatever reason, annoys me less than the old industry standard of being asked to pay for the software and then being asked to pay again for the privilege of actually using it - particularly in the case of things like costume option packs and ships, which are account-wide permanent unlocks. If I had to pay repeatedly for each character I wanted to, say, put the Wrath of Khan jacket on, or have command an Excelsior-class starship, that would be a different story, and I would probably adopt a position of extreme cussedness and decline to do so. As it is, though, I find I don't particularly grudge them that; they have to keep the lights on somehow.

But this isn't really the place for a debate about MMO business models. YMMV, anyway.

Given that my participation has started as more of an experiment than anything, and I'm trying not to have my money go to the copyright cartel (like the MMO business model, not a discussion for this thread), it does make it... difficult to dress the characters up as I see fit. And I kinda gave up on the officers, anyway, since I can't seem to turn OFF the display of their armor, yet I can turn off the display of mine. Although maybe I'll go poke at the settings again...

"Disable Visuals" should be in the menu that drops down when you right-click on the Body box of each individual officer's status screen (top right):

It works for me, anyway, although I've noticed that it's not consistent. For instance, you'll note that Bob's Body and Kit boxes aren't showing the little international "no smoking" signs that indicate visuals are disabled there, but you can't see his armor or kit. Sometimes changes to visuals status need the game to be restarted before they'll work, especially on PCs, but sometimes on officers too. This behavior is probably some kind of weird graphics driver glitch.

(Bob's new, or else he'd have a a tribble with which to annoy his Klingon colleagues. His quiet revenge for the conquest of the Gorn Hegemony. :)

I've noticed a potentially related glitch when I've gone into tailoring mode. It seems after doing a second edit, my first outfit just plain disappears from the list of outfits I can edit, and I basically do have to restart the game to get it back. I'm still outfit tweaking, for the record. (Commander 25, and still tweaking? One would think I like paper dolls or something. :P)

I just unlocked the ability to create a Klingon character recently... but I have yet to indulge the more violent aspects of my nature. :)

LOL And now I have the mental imagery of Cosmonaut going around in Hawaiian shorts, just because he said he can. (Not with the velour shirt, though, because eww.)

The first time I saw the Enterprise uniforms, I thought the horizontal zippers on the pants legs meant they had a zip-off convertible shorts mode. They may well have done - that's a peculiar place for pockets - but I can't recall ever seeing anyone's uniform actually in shorts mode, alas.

Would've been a nice nod to TOS for T'Pol and/or Hoshi to were the shorts form occasionally, if it did.

They planned their campaigns just as you might make a splendid piece of harness. It looks very well; and answers very well; until it gets broken; and then you are done for. Now I made my campaigns of ropes. If anything went wrong, I tied a knot; and went on.

Heh, given where the zippers are, they'd have been Jams - the legs would still extend below the knees. William Ware Theiss would not have approved. :)

(Is it weird that, on the couple of occasions when they put T'Pol in a regular blue boiler suit like everyone else's in order to show that Things Are Xtra Srs Right Now, I liked her better that way?)

Absolutely not. I believe the correct term was 'Yum'. When she quit the Vulcan Science Council at the end of season 2, I was hoping she'd wear the normal uniform. Sadly, I was disappointed.

I was extremely skeptical of Subcommander T'Pol when the show started, if only because they were so freakin' blatant about her being the show's Emma Peel ('cause hey, it worked on Voyager), but... in a curious parallel to the way it goes down on screen, she grows on you, preposterous costumes notwithstanding. :)

I can even identify the moment at which I realized that I possessed a great and shameless wuv for her. There's a bit in... I forget, one or the other of the season 1-season 2 bridge two-parter, where the Time-Traveling Bad Guys have whacked her up on some 22nd-century alien equivalent of sodium pentothal and are trying to get her to tell them where in time Captain Archer has gone, which she can't tell them because a) she doesn't know and b) she thinks time travel is horseshit. So all she keeps saying, in an increasingly spacy tone of voice, is, "The Vulcan Science Directorate has determined that time travel is impossible."

Later, after they've given up and cut her loose, she staggers back to her room and falls into bed like someone who's just been tortured for information she doesn't possess, and a hologram of Archer appears like the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi and starts calling her name, to which she responds miserably,

"... Science Vulcan Directorate [sic] has determined... that time travel is... not fair."

If you do not want to give her a hug and tell her everything's going to be OK at that moment, you have a heart of stone. :)

OK, then here's an image of my current crew. From left to right:

Lt. Cmdr. Itomge, second officer and Chief Engineer.
Lt. Cmdr. Tarah, first officer and Chief Tactical Officer.
Cmdr. Jennifer Kanazawa, captain of the ship (currently U.S.S. Wetterhorn, previously U.S.S. Belford).
Lt. Cmdr. Juzas, Chief Science Officer.
Lt. Ryexada, Assistant Chief Engineer.

Kanazawa does have a skirt version of the ship uniform, as well as a "mock" version of a TOS uniform (I should probably break down buy the TOS package) in command color (Taskforce Tamerlane tends towards a TOS theme).

The relationship between the Gorn and the Klingons in STO is interesting, if only because I think I detect a distinct echo of the John M. Ford approach to Klingon culture in it. The Klingons regard the Gorn as a sort of client/subject race, obviously subjugated but yet respected and trusted enough to serve as high-ranking officers in the Klingon military. More than slaves but less than equals - it strikes me that that's much like what Mike Ford called kuve in The Final Reflection.

Please disregard the master systems monitor at the back of the room that's displaying a schematic of a Prometheus-class munchkinmulti-vector assault vessel. Cosmo's been trying to get that damn thing fixed since he took command. Nobody at the shipyard seems to care.

Nice ship, but a hell of an ugly and open bridge that takes way too long to cross from any one station to another in the event of an exploding console emergency where you need someone to man the helm RIGHT NOW. There's enough space there for at least forty people to be working, instead of eight.

Incidentally, have you considered having a tactical/strategic holo-tank installed in front of the captain to supplement the viewscreen? I've seen similar rigs on ships before, though you need to decide how to interact with the damn thing. The two main choices, it seems, are a laser pointer and a pupil sensor-monocle. And I don't know if you captain can rock the monocle.

This is a problem with all the ship interior "desktop themes". The scales are all out of whack, everywhere, I presume as an engine design decision related to the game camera. It's least noticable in the TOS themes, as the sets they're based on had scales effectively out of whack for the context, as a design decision related to the filming camera and crew of the time period.

When it gets really bad, is when you're doing something like flying a Miranda-class, and it has the Sovereign's engine room in it. I don't care HOW you do the math, that doesn't fit there. And it doesn't change significantly unless you're willing to pour lots of money into things.

I've put money in for an appearance package, and a couple of crew upgrades, but that's been the extent of my willingness to spend in the game.

And, for that matter, all the bridge sets of the TNG era. I remember being astounded by the TNG interior sets, not because they were amazing, but because they were so absurdly vast and... beige. The bridge of the Enterprise (D) looks more like the lobby of some preposterous Belgian hotel than the control room of a starship.

That said...

Yeah, that probably would explain the insanely high ceilings in the corridors. The STO camera can apparently not do the "ghost wall" thing.

You know what's even funnier? That engine room (and Ten Forward) in an NX-class. Hopefully one of these days there'll be an interior set pack for that one like there is for the TOS-era Connie. Which, awesomely, has Jefferies tubes!

The TMP sets were criticized as resembling a hotel... and the TNG sets were (rightfully) compared as being even more so.

Yes, they were trying to push forward that this was a slightly more... luxurious era, but I do prefer the later interior looks.

It certainly seems like a decision between ghost walling and shoving the camera around (they did the latter I noticed), and trying to minimize the result in-game.

Not to mention the results of shoving those same sets into a Defiant of all ships, which is so small even compared to the NX...

A touch of the old Forbidden Broadway there? Or is it just coincidence that it sounds like she doesn't want Patti Lupone to replace her in Masterclass?

In the iteration Forbidden Broadway Strikes Back, the opening number, "Parody Tonight", features an impersonation of actress Zoe Caldwell (who played Maria Callas on Broadway in "Masterclass"). In her first appearance in the number she says, "No, no, Ari! I don't want to sing. I don't want to make love. I don't want Patti Lupone to replace me in Masterclass. I won't have a word said against her -- but! A Maria Callas from Long Island? I ask you!"

She then reappears after almost every other celebrity impersonation in the song to make a comment that ends with "I ask you!".

And that was probably way more than you cared to hear.

It's just that I keep finding such obscure little tidbits in UF after I learn about them from other sources that I figured that was just another one.

23. "My crew, let me show you them"
In response to message #0

LAST EDITED ON May-21-12 AT 06:01 AM (EDT)

My first character and crew (who, in the finest tradition of both Trek and EPU, may be just a tiny bit of an author avatar *cough*) is, alas, really not that interesting. (With the possible exception of OPS Lt. Sarat, who places in the top percentile for telepathic sensitivity for Vulcans, and who wears gloves on duty to avoid accidental psychic and/or psychometric contact. A note in his file actually forbids him from coming within 20 light years of the Galactic Barrier, which his captain jokingly refers to as "the restraining order".)

So instead, here's Captain Sanara Lucel Draz, third host of the Draz symbiont, who is technically not from this current timeline (long story still mostly classified by DTI) and the... colorful crew of U.S.S. Europa (NCC-80104), a Luna-class science vessel.

(The musical theme just kind of happened as I was working on hobbies and interests, and I ran with it.)

The lady herself, just starting to show her age - if you look closely, she's got a few wrinkles (she's about Janeway's age). Enlisting in Starfleet was going to be her fall-back if she didn't get chosen to be Joined, but the symbiont thought that was an excellent idea. Her primary field is astrophysics. (Draz's previous hosts were a marine biologist and a geologist.)

Commander BULLSAE (Saurian male)
Chief Engineer, First Officer
Efficient. Stable. Reliable. One of Sanara's closest friends and confidantes (in this reality). Doesn't inflate his estimates, but still gets the job done on time or sooner. Never loses his temper, never panics. Speaks in short, clipped sentences (like a certain Salarian). Has an excellent singing voice, rarely heard.

With regard to his common nickname, "Bullseye": "Too much trouble to correct. Besides, it means 'on target', 'precise'. I like that."

Commander KAHAD (Tellarite male)
Chief Medical Officer
Stubborn, confrontational, habitually argumentative. Has no patience for people who wind up in his sickbay because they were stupid. Constantly butting heads with the captain (over mission priorities) and Lorix (who he considers a witch doctor and a quack). Cares more than he lets on. Kahad loves opera and reading medical journals (mostly to pick apart the articles).

Lt. Commander T'MAAL (Vulcan female)
Chief Science Officer
Soft-spoken and diplomatic, deferring to other scientists in their areas of expertise, but coolly uncompromising when she believes that someone is being unreasonable. She sees her job as that of a coordinator, determining what resources are necessary for the current problem or research goal and making sure that those under her are able to do their work efficiently and harmoniously. Her primary field is sociology, though she has a general knowledge of many others. She plays the violin.

LORIX (Reman male)
Doctor
Formerly held the rank of centurion, equivalent to Lt. Commander. Weary of a long life of hardship, servitude and fighting (first for, than against, the Romulan Empire), he has joined the crew to learn Starfleet ways and teach what he can before he finally passes on. He is an expert in natural and traditional remedies and in the powers of the mind (healing and otherwise), some of which even 25th century medicine has yet to fully understand. At the same time, he's quite willing to use modern drugs if they're available and the best tool for the job. Lorix has set up a small zoo in his corner of sickbay, much to Kahad's displeasure, and has also taken over a portion of the airponics bay. He is very guarded about his past; it is known that he had a family at some point, and that they are no longer alive. He has sometimes been found listening to achingly sad classical music from various cultures.

Lt. MICHAELA LI WEN (Human female)
Tactical Officer
"Lieutenant Mike", as she is almost universally known (if not as "Sir"), is her parents' only daughter and grew up just as rough-and-tumble as her three brothers. She's a cunning and dirty fighter who can outsmart, outfight and outdrink opponents twice her size. Wen has high standards and pushes herself harder than anyone. She plays parrises squares and other contact sports and enjoys 20th century "rock and roll" music.

Lt. CARLENE SPAULDING (Human female)
Operations Officer
Spaulding is something of an enigma to her fellow officers. Stern and efficient in the performance of her duty, she rarely mixes with the rest of the crew when not at it, taking her meals in her quarters rather than the common mess and avoiding social functions. This pattern goes back to the Academy; details about her life before that are hard to come by. Speculation among the crew, though officially discouraged, is rampant. She has been cleared of being an Undine infiltrator, submitting to the tests without objection or comment save for an arch "may I go now?" at the conclusion. Her tastes in music, or even if she has any, are unknown.

(No, even I don't know what her deal is. She's probably not an android or a Changeling. Maybe she's another Temporal Cold War agent. Or just a naturally private person.)

Lt. (jg) HERMAN CALVIN KESSINGER (Human male)
Security
Mike's deputy is a slab of beef with a blonde buzzcut, the sort of man who looks like he wrestles Klingons and Nausicaans for fun (and does, on the holodeck). Though he towers over his superior, he obeys her orders without question, and is her go-to man in confrontations where she needs someone large backing her up. He's a brawler, with not much finesse but enough cunning to know when he should back off or go for a leg sweep. He played drums at the Academy, but gave it up when graduation broke up the band.

Ens. TEB DONLUN (Betazoid male)
Flight Controller
Not many Betazoids follow the Tactical track at the Academy, but Donlun is an excellent pilot whose uncanny knack for anticipating his captain's orders (and sometimes his opponent's) is at least partly due to his telepathic abilities. He's modest about these gifts and quiet and soft-spoken in general, encouraging others to talk while he simply enjoys the atmosphere and camaraderie. Like other Betazoids, he can be counted on to be completely honest. He plays the clarinet.

PIRPOWU (Hylasan male)
Observer
The Hylasa are native to fluidic space, where they live in harmony with the cosmozoans known as "Gekli". After Europa's incursion into fluidic space, Pirpowu joined the crew to see new horizons and to seek Federation assistance for his people against the Undine, their common enemy. Still finds living on a constructed starship strange and greatly misses the songs of the Gekli, but is willing to make such sacrifices for his people and new friends.

(One of these days, I'll need to figure out a suitable title... it doesn't help that I don't know what's displaying outside of "Commander" on my character.)

Oh, the times in STO when I would have killed for an Ubercharge.

Huh, didn't know you were in STO Gryphon, I should check here more often. Oh, and since I didn't see it here, I'll give you the answer for why you can't see armor or kits on KDF characters. Its not in the code. Only Fed characters get the armor and kit visuals. Kinda sucks.

I'll have to post my crews (yes I have way more than one captain) here sometime later. I have to get ready for a trip right now.

I won't fight you Atton.
I don't care, I just want you to die.
