"2014.08.11: What You Are in the Dark"

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-14 AT 01:50 PM (EDT)

Digging around in a logfile today, I ran across this from summer:

Aug 11 20:33:35 <Z-Gryphon> ["This is the weirdest date I've ever been on. And I should point out that I've been on a date that ended in a giant robot fight." "All my dates are blind dates, baby."]
Aug 11 20:33:44 <Z-Gryphon> - one of the "black panel" dialogue sets from "Toph Loves Corwin"

   Also,

Aug 12 20:38:33 <Z-Gryphon> In other news, I've randomly gotten curious about a handful of things The Kids Are Into these days and done some investigating. I am deeply disappointed that "Attack on Titan" is -not- about a space war breaking out between the colonized moons of Saturn.
Aug 12 20:40:12 <Philip-M> ... eyaaaah, you probably want to stay as far away from Attack on Titan as humanly possible. IT IS NOT FOR YOU.
Aug 12 20:43:16 <Z-Gryphon> oh come on, how could a bleak post-apocalyptic fantasy about cannibalistic giants NOT be for me?
Aug 12 20:43:16 <Z-Gryphon> :)
Aug 12 20:43:58 <Philip-M> Heh.
Aug 12 20:49:31 <Z-Gryphon> It does look pretty daft, though. Particularly the weird-ass Hero Equipment, which seems like it's basically people trying to fight giants with the invention Thomas Midgley (inventor of CFCs and leaded gasoline) accidentally killed himself with.
Aug 12 20:49:35 <Z-Gryphon> ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Midgley,_Jr.#Later_life_and_death )
Aug 12 20:51:06 <Z-Gryphon> which seems ill-advised on a lot of levels.

The closest you're going to get to that is Titan Maximum, which is an explicit parody of Voltron rather than an actual drama. I found it hilarious, but the caveat there is that it is essentially a Robot Chicken piece extended out to series length (much like Moral Orel) which means that the humor is deeply mean.

There's also Tytania, which isn't about war breaking out between the moons of Saturn, but is about nuanced politics and awesome space fights taking place on a galactic stage. Like someone watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes and decided "you know what? Let's make more of that."

Speaking as someone who fast-forwards through the fight scenes in Attack on Titan so he can get to more delicious bleakness, the hero gear is actually cool. Because, well, what do you do if you're fighting a giant that artillery pieces really can't stop? Clearly, you actually climb the fucking thing and attack its weak points up close and personal, like those suicidal anti-mech troopers in Battletech/Mechwarrior who would run right up to an Atlas or an Awesome and climb it in order to lay in some charges and bring it down. But with more Shadow of the Colossus mixed in.

Tytania is actually based off of a different novel series by the same author that originally created Boring Germans In Space.

It's also much, much newer, and the animation is a lot slicker.

I liked both of them, but I'm not sure they'd be the management's cup of tea.

Develop more powerful artillery, obviously.

Alternately, you could talk to the Baltimore Gun Club. They have experience with large field pieces. Admittedly, it was used to hit a substantially larger target, but it did hit its mark, more or less (Artillery being one of those sports where "almost" counts as a palpable hit.)

Use a crossbow with a line on it and a sharp-tipped rocket. We know they have access to gunpowder weapons, and non-guided rockets are really fuckin' easy. Accelerant, tube, sharp thing, you're basically done. The Koreans were doing it in the twelfth century, for fuck's sake. It's a sight easier than the Arse-Mounted Spiderman Tin.

Then again, this is a Japanese show, so a hwach'a probably isn't on the cards. Civ V has taught me that Sejong and Oda mix about as well as fleshlights and cheesegraters...
