Funnily enough, I actually purchased a Ford C-Max a couple of months ago, replacing a 14-year-old manual-shift Focus. It has a bit of a wider turning radius than I'm used to (not surprisingly, it's a larger car) and the trunk space feels a little smaller due to the battery pack in the back, but otherwise I've felt it's been a fantastic car.Granted, I looked at the plug-in Energi model and decided I didn't want to put up with the greatly reduced trunk space, so I didn't attempt to drive that one to get a good comparison (plus I have an apartment, so the plug-in feature doesn't help me any). However I did drive one of the new Toyota Priuses in comparison which... was still kind of sluggish. From what I understand Ford decided to sacrifice gas mileage to put some more horsepower into the gas engine which is why the C-Max ends up performing better. And heck, I still get in the mid-40s MPG around town, 50+ on a good day.
Not entirely sure what you're referring to with the small doors - I'm pretty tall and don't have much issue with them, and I don't feel quite like I'm folding myself into the car like I did with my Focus.
And the automatic features are really nice. I still think it's magic that the wipers turn on automatically based on how much water is on the windshield. (Yes, I looked up how it actually works, doesn't change the fact that it's cool) Plus the thing will parallel-park itself which is great, considering I absolutely HATE parallel parking.
