While I can see how the 'Valiant shift' can be jarring, I personally feel it works. Possibly because there are extraordinary young people. All of them are rather mature for their age, often thanks to the incredible trials they've faced. They thrive on new experiences and challenges, even if they don't go looking for them.

And the fact is, this is a universe that turned a group of 20th century college students into a galactic force of peace and heroics. The Duellists and their friends are actually BETTER PREPARED.

Besides, Utena would have had to do this sooner or later. She's a Prince on a white horse and a paladin. Like it or not, if she didn't have the ability to go out on adventures and fight evil every now and then, she'd be miserable. And UF is a space opera...
