Or the AK-47, which is at best an adequately accurate assault rifle, heavy and chunky in that Russian style, but also virtually impossible to break and can be counted to do the job it was designed for every time.

Getting back to what you said earlier about Ishiyama, now I find myself thinking of Mojave as sort of America's version of that planet, a place where the settlers ended up creating a culture that largely copied a "golden era" in their home country's past. In America's case, that would have been the 1950s, though with obvious concessions to the cultural and technological advances since then. One of the odd results of such an approach was a regression in electronics technology, seen by many of the settlers as a cause of much of Earth's problems in the late 20th and early 21st century. But at the same time, fusion power and other post-Contact technologies worked their way in, until you get that "21st century as seen by the 1950s" sort of world. You had nuclear-powered robots with vacuum tube brains running life-like AI programs, powered armor and directed energy weapons, and yet men went to work in three-piece suits and families listened to radio serials or watched black and white TV.
