It's also the standard Paragon MO in the Mass Effect games. Side quests for great justice!

I do owe them a thank-you note, actually; I got a sweet set of power armor pieces off one of their guys who managed to get himself killed out there with no help from me. As a completely unrelated aside, I like that you can repaint power armor pieces, so that when their former owners' associates run across you, they don't know you jacked it from one of their buddies' corpse. I should get them a nice mutfruit basket.

Dan's attitude toward it is a bit like Gordon Freeman's in Freeman's Mind: "I have no trouble going up to a grieving widow and telling her I'm sorry for her loss, but her husband was a ratfuck meathead who tried to kill me for no God-damn reason." Just for a change of pace, I made him a little older than the Usual Sort of Protagonist; discounting his time in cryo, he's probably in his mid-fifties. He wasn't just in the Army for a hitch during the pre-nuclear phase of the War, he did his 30 and retired.

That extra seasoning means he's rarely off-balance for long, and he has very clear ideas about who the good guys and the bad guys are. (Mind you, most of the time the game makes that decision very easy, but bear with me, I'm roleplaying here. :) The good guys get all the help he can give them. The bad guys get bullets. That's how it works. That's how it's always worked. War... war never changes.
