Yeah, it was a nice thing to wake up to (went to bed last night much earlier than I normally do). Quite an enjoyable read.

BTW, Juri was right; I don't think I can look at Miki the same way ever again. :)

So that's why Gryphon's brain tormented him with visions of vampires. Good call leaving them out, though; I figure if real vampires existed, they'd have nothing but contempt for the goth crowd. (No offense meant to goths in specific; from what I've seen of them, though, they're merely a manifestation of the 'I want to be an individual, just like everyone else' trend.)

That, or he put in the goth section to foist of the vampire muse.

And, nah the vampires wouldn't have contempt for the Goth crowd...no more then you have contempt for cattle...I mean think about it, it's built in camoflage. We stay up all night, are asleep all day, plus enough of us are junkies that track marks on the arms wouldn't be noticed. And enough of us wear fake fangs that those would just be passed off as well, except for maybe they would get compliments..."Hey man, who did those? They look great. I wish I could get mine to be anything but 2 shades lighter then my real teeth."

And yeah, we are. Just lke everyone else does...we just like this way. That, and dressing like a 19th century streetwalker is fun. :-)

Actually, it's a parallel coincidence. The vampire thing may yet turn up at some point. Darn it, I used to like them, before the World of Pretention crowd got hold of them.

Er... since Dorothy is an electromechanical robot (or, to use a phrase my friend Andrew Petrarca coined and of which I'm very fond, a "galvanic girl"), not a bioroid, that wouldn't work very well... it'd just get her mock alimentary canal all sticky.

It was something of a joke...I doubt that vampires would fit well into SoS. .45, maybe, but not SoS..

Not right now, no, but keep in mind that I have a plot arc right now that leads to something like 2420. Anyway, I'm not thinking of a whole rampaging horde of them; that would be unwieldy. :)

Whoever said that Vampires should go rampaging and keep
in hordes ?

A smart one , who would know how to adapt to the
whole tech thing , smart enough to feinge body-heat emmisions
and vital processes , cunning enough to have survived
a few centuries . If he were really smart he wouldn't even
have to feed , he'd think of something like blood-synthetyzing
nano-machines in his bloodstream or one of numerous other
choices that come to mind .
If the Vampires we're talking about here ignore simple religious
icons when those aren't backed up by true faith and the effect
the sun has on them is merely caused by their body chemistry
and/or extremely sensitive skin then implants and modifications
would handle that easily enough .

And if they are a species you'd think they'd adapt naturally
at some time .... the possibilities are awsome !!!

All the more reason to pay attention to Gryph's creative cycle
IMO , ne?

-Griever

It sounds to me like this is your big chance to knock some wind out of the pretensious vampire crowd, or to reinvent them. Vampire skatepunks, anyone?

These days, 'winter' - as defined by "snow deep enough to need digging out from" - generally lasts from late january/early february through mid-april.

It's now September, and yesterday it was 90 degrees out.

Geez, back in 1992 when I lived there I remember digging my car out in November twice. Which wasn't fun...

Damn, you were here in '92?

Then again, November of '92 I was in the dorms at SUNY Buffalo, and the
day after a huge storm dumped shitloads of snow on us - before the plows came by the drifts were about 12 feet high in places - I had to walk across a quarter mile of it to try to reach campus and deliver a paper that was due...

Bleh, I wrote this once already but my computer choked before I could send it.

-Warning! Brain droppings follow!-

I think my favorite part of Hogtown was Miki and the theremin. Theremins have always struck a cord with me (badum-CLANK). I built one for an 8th grade science project. The assignment was to make some sort of musical instrument, and everyone else came in with some variation on the shoebox-and-rubber-bands concept. I came in with a theremin. My teacher was completely floored, and my classmates remember it to this day. Yay for theremins!

I have a feeling Juri will be quite at home in france, seeing as so much of RGU is french-inspired.

Something I really like in symphony is the intricacies of the relationships between all the people, like Utena and Saionji's issues with their freindship.

I hope we get to see the meeting between Urd and Utena sometime. It may have been very interesting. Also, what'll happen if Urd meets Azalynn?

Another thing that I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder: I know it doesn't matter at all, but is Kate, in fact, of the lesbian persuasion? I get the impression she's a bit of a bi, myself. And Juri is... crud, I can't remember. There was something odd about her unrequited love, but I can't rember what is was.

Immense impressedivness on Azalynn's part for the whole 'poise' thing that Urd's capable of. On Urd's part, probably a 'hey, I know you!', assuming that Urd, being at some point (not sure about now) the Cupid, can recognize various worshippers....

Himself stated that Kate is bisexual a bit back. Juri... well, according to a check over at http://www.duellests.tj Episode 17 shows Juri to have a crush on Shiori, as she keeps her picture in the locket that gets smashed by Ruka later on (in episode 28). So... make your own conceptual leaps....

Actually, technically, Ruka -threatened- to crush Juri's locket (which
had a picture of Shiori in it from their Ohtori Junior High years) in
Episode 29, not 28. But, he didn't follow through, instead managing to
get Juri to duel Utena one last time. -Technically-, if one wants
to be pendantic, it was the Power Of Dios (tm) that shattered Juri's
locket at the end of the episode, and right after that, Juri forefited
the duel to Utena.

Hope this helps... :)

Actually, I owe you an apology (and if I'm gonna do it, it'll be as public as my offense).

I have had a horrific few days at work - moved to another department and seen the department I built and wrote the book on how to do things (literally - they're working out of the manual I wrote on it), and watched the trouble tickets move from the ZERO that were there when I left on Wednesday to 100 pending issues by today, plus the filled mailbox of issues.

And the guy that's doing it now says >I< left it that way. Thankfully, the VP in charge of our group checks things at the end of every day, so he's got the records. But still, you spend two years buildig something and watch someone tear it apart in two days... it makes you more bitter than usual. (And I can already transmute milk into cottage cheese at twenty feet.)

So I was feeling evil and snarky and that just got me at a bad time, and I apologize for lashing out at someone who didn't deserve it at all.

Umm, no offense, but are you braindead or something? "Aw, how nice, you brought me a redhead"
For some reason, the day's activities had put Kaitlyn in a
slightly odd mood; with their post-prandial course of action decided,
she spent the rest of the meal girlwatching, an activity for which the
BCE Place courtyard, and indeed the City of Toronto as a whole, is a
place admirably suited. Shortly, she'd involved Miki (with slight
embarrassment) and Saionji (with faint amusement at Miki's
embarrassment) as well. Utena supposed she could have countered by
trying to interest Dorothy in a spot of guywatching, but such a scheme
didn't seem likely to be profitable, so she didn't bother. (Well,
actually, Kate was doing a bit of that too, but she wasn't commenting
about that so much, since she figured in doing so she'd lose her
collaborators.)

If you've not figured it out from this, and *several* other bits in the stories, well...Grow a Brain

Eesh, no need to get abusive. I just wanted clarification/confirmation. It's never safe to assume, even given the evidence from the story. I know lots of girls that girlwatch. Also the Juri thing could very well be the idolization that is found in so many anime's. Not really even lust, just sincere adoration, such as all the girls' of Ohtori squealing Utena's name while she plays basketball.

Could be, but Kate hasn't known Juri long enough to idolize her, even if she were the sort to do that kind of thing. :)

Thank you. I am very pleased with the way Utena and Saionji's friendship has developed; over the course of Hogtown it toddled off in its own direction, and in doing so amused the hell out of me. Pure fun, and for characters who've really earned it, too. :)

>I hope we get to see the meeting between Urd and Utena sometime. It
>may have been very interesting.

Well, since I skipped over it and don't know if I'll ever get the opportunity to backfill it, I can tell you what happened - Skuld and Belldandy had warned Urd ahead of time that she was not to interfere ("Don't try to be cute, and don't try to 'help'. Keep your hands, your potions, and your 'advice' to yourself."), and now that Skuld's an adult (and Urd has matured some since Ragnarok), Urd pays attention when she puts things that seriously. So Urd was on her best behavior, and there was no havoc. She spent most of the week sitting on the toolbox and cheerleading. :)

>Also, what'll happen if Urd meets
>Azalynn?

Offhand, I would guess that they'd go out and paint the town red.

>Another thing that I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder: I know it
>doesn't matter at all, but is Kate, in fact, of the lesbian
>persuasion? I get the impression she's a bit of a bi, myself.

She's bisexual, but at the moment she's mainly looking at women. This may be due mainly to the fact that her sole (very bad) experience so far has been with a man, and thus it will take her a lot longer to dare trying to get involved with another one. Kaitlyn is very much a romantic; she has to feel as though she's in love with someone before she can go to bed with them, and that's much more likely to happen with a woman than a man at this point. (It's kind of academic right now, since she's not seeing anybody.)

>And Juri
>is... crud, I can't remember.

Juri is complicated. :) She thinks of herself as pretty much entirely homosexual, but perhaps, theoretically, if the right guy came along... not that she believes the right guy actually, literally exists, but as a skeptic she's leery of absolutes, even in labeling herself. :)

Interesting mental picture here:

It was a photo of a slim, pale young man dressed in an outlandish getup of black velvet and white, ruffled silk, with streaks of kohl surrounding his eyes, black lipstick, and white face powder enhancing his pallor beneath them. His hair was bluish-black and spiked into a cleverly geometric disorder. He stood with his right hand in the pocket of his velvet smoking jacket; his left hand was raised, palm up, and a goblet of some blood-red liquid rested in it, the liquid matching the scarlet polish on his fingernails. His fingers were bedecked with rings, his bare chest crossed by black beads and a silver ankh.

One blue eyebrow was cocked above one black-rimmed blue eye, the expression on his handsome, powdered, painted face an intriguing combination of ennui, amusement, and frank, slightly mocking sexual challenge.

Because, see, when I first read this, I immediately knew that *this* was the subject of the picture that we were warned not to look at before we read the story. However, my brain immediately latched upon the first picture on this page as a possible template. And, as much as I like that picture, I have to say that it's probably a good idea it didn't provide the form for the portrait of Goth Miki. Too many disturbing images.

Still, that is a nice pic.

Besides Goth Miki that everyone is snickering about (the folks in the next office were wondering what I was laughing about at lunchtime), there's 3 other things I'd like to comment on:

- Who would have thought that Dorothy would be the one to coin "Vlad the Impala". There's something definitely wrong if she doesn't voluntarily take the Turing Test this time. So why do I keep having a niggling suspicion that she's going to be forced into taking it for some reason? (the suspicious part of me working overtime?)

- o/~ "Bitch, where is my money? / I need it right away! / I have to go to HMV and buy some Doctor Dre. / Bitch, where is my money? / There can be no delay! / I have to buy a new pimp suit at Zellers or The BaaaaAAAAAAAY!"

Here I thought it was a salute by the authors to the "talent" portion of the Pimp of the Year contest in the (IMO) very funny movie I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, only to find out its from a Toronto late-night cable comedy show. Then again, knowing Canadian comedy groups, it probably is a take-off on the movie after all.

- The discussion only briefly touched on the passage of the Extension to the Psi Act; after all, though it boded ill for the structure of society at large, it would have no direct effect on any of -them-, right?

For once in her life, Azalynn dv'Ir Natashkan missed a trick.

Why does this last sentence feel like it's written all-caps, bold-face, underlined, red, extra-large font, surrounded by flashing lights, with ominous music for a soundtrack? Is it possible to write something more obviously intended to be foreshadowing something?

Now the authors can sit back and chuckle while people drive themselves crazy trying to decide which of several different possiblities, if any, is being foreshadowed here <g>

Nicely done, folks

Jeanne

Well, she can't really be forced to take it, unless you mean forced by circumstances. (OK, I suppose she could if Corwin ordered her to go, but we've already established that he doesn't want to do that.)

... OK... actually, it isn't intended to be anything particularly momentous. All it means is that Azalynn has, for once, failed to notice something about one of her friends - namely, that Devlin Carter is an unregistered telepath. Had she known that, she wouldn't have passed off the subject of the Psi Act Extension nearly so easily.

Corwin's made his feelings about ordering her to take it quite clear, I think. And speaking of clarity, I should have been clearer. Yes, forced by circumstances to take the test (as in, "only independent, sentient beings can <do X>" "all right, give me the #&*^%$ test now") before she has an opportunity to voluntarily take it (as in, "I've scheduled myself to take the test a week from next Tuesday"). But that's my evil, suspicious sub-conscious for you, always looking for the darker side of life ;)

Everyone has a bad day, even Azalynn. At a guess I'd say the huge majority of that entire group Devlin hangs around with has missed it. So OK, no foreshadowing beyond the Psi Act, and possible (probable?) PsiCorps raids for unregistered folks (I'd ask if we're going to get to see just how good those forged PsiCorps cards Zoner's been handing out like candy really are, but asking that sort of thing is against the rules so I won't <weg>)

Well, 100% is a pretty good majority...
And being as the method by which psi-corps finds out if you are a teep or not is a simple genetics test (ref: the psi-corps trilogy) and about 30% get through, well you've got a pretty good chance that even if devlin *does* get tested. And I'd assume that anything that zoner passes out is either legit, or a perfect copy.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be the Psi-Cop who tried to snag Devlin. In addition to Amanda, they whole gang is pretty damn intimidating. And someything tells me that Kate's reaction to someone attempting to mentally push her around would be to growl, pull her sword, and decapitate the jerk...

And that doesn't even touch on Utena...

Decapitation is extremely messy, and somewhat irreversible, so it really depends on the degree of pushing around. I mean, look at her duel with Saionji in Wounded Rose; she doesn't even bare her steel until he's drawn blood. She doesn't see deadly force as a first or even second option most of the time.

There are conditions, though, under which she would say, "If you do that again, I will kill you," and mean every syllable of it.

>And that doesn't even touch on Utena...

If they know what's good for them, they'd better not, too. :)

The Psi-Corp? They wouldn't know good from a hole in their heads.
Which might actually be an improvement, as it would let some fresh air
into those brains.

Random Thought: You know, there's a whole BUNCH of enchantment on the Thorn Of Rose...a fair portion of that done by someone who has (even if he doesn't realize) rather strong feelings for Utena...

Makes me wonder just what the sword's rection to a psi-cop getting to close would be, much less Utena's (much less the rest of the IBGF)

hmmmm....

Nothing.

People ascribe a lot more to things than they should. The sword is an extension of its weilder.

And using this as a jumping off point:

I am amused/annoyed by the posts were people are like "Well if they do anything the WDF will just come in and stomp them."

Um, no - not gonna happen. The universe is way too messy for that - that would start an intergalactic war and there are decent odds the WDF would lose it. There are already issues on the frontier, and trying to fight the UFP in the rear area at the same time would be like Hitler jumping the gun and invading Russia - a bad idea.

As for the "They did it with Salusia" - a handful of people ran a Spec. Ops. mission and reinstated the rightful ruler. They succeeded because the public supported the action. If they'd put in some puppet there would have been an uprising. As it is they unseated a usurper, who was an unpopular ruler to boot, and put the proper, and popular, ruler on the throne.

Also, Kate isn't going to behead anyone. The moment she does that - she's dead. Shot at range by every PsiCop there. Many have noted that things have leveled out to be more 'normal' in SOS - that's true, and they aren't going to suddenly jump into being a superhero comic. The old core group has done many things that are nigh-impossible - most of them after a few hundred years of experience, and of late they aren't just Detians but are abnormally powerful even for that race. After Twilight they are nearly demi-gods in many ways.

But the cast of SOS are still teenagers. The cream of the crop, very exceptional teenagers, but still teenagers. If they try to stand and fight against the Psi Corps, I wouldn't bet on them. They corps is a professional, militaristic force. If the corps makes a move on them, they their only real chance is to avoid a fight.

The Psi Corps are not the Keystone Cops, and the IDS is not the JLA.

Huh. Didn't think of that. (Desperate handwaving) That's what they do, all right, but they can use a rose, because it's symbolic of the Rose Bride, and therefore by Similarity and Contagion acts as if it *were* the Rose Bride and her gem.

Otherwise, they'd have to wait until Anthy actually gets into the story before they could do anything!

True, but mixing them like that creates a whole in the space time continum so large MY avatar can use it as a bloody portal! ^_^;

Thinking, though... If they use a rose, since its red, wouldn't that mean the rings don't work on the color green? (Since Green is the chromic opposite of red) Might explain Lisa da B developing a sudden intrest in Woodlands camoflauge gear. ^_^!

Actually, this assumption is pretty much... well, wrong, but thanks for playing. Sure, the Society couldn't take on the whole Psi Corps; there are thousands of them. But they wouldn't all fit in Alden Hall.

I do wish you wouldn't use that "Thus have I spoken; Thus shall it be" tone when you're talking about something I'm designing. It confuses the boys 'n girls, and since the public assumes we have some kind of mind link, it makes me look like I changed my mind later on when I do things differently than you assumed I would.

I know what has been planned - I helped plan that bit, if you recall.

I didn't say there wouldn't be any confrontation, I said they couldn't have a stand up battle against the corps. Small group action, smash and grab, etc, against a small group - sure. But they couldn't stand and fight for an extended period because the Corps would send in a large force and stomp anyone who opposed them.

Well, I have seen bits of *most* of the things I buy. When I started buying GW I watched a couple of eps and thought it looked ok, and I was still employed so I kept buying it.

Sometime this week I'll probably be doing a massive eBay sale of VHS anime - and probably my Jeep on eBay motors.

Now, if we had a mind link maybe you'd pick up my fondness for terrible Hong Kong action movies like Butterfly and Sword. (I watched it tonight - Gryph was in the room at the time.) Ok, so the main appeal for me there was Michelle Yeoh.

(Sidenote from CNN just now - the location they are taking the WTC wreckage is the recently closed Fresh Kills Landfill. The commentator mentioned it was an unfortunate name - but 'Kills' is Dutch for 'stream'. Funny thing is I never really thought of the other meaning because the area of NY I grew up in had a bunch of such places, like Lisha Kill. I used to drive Lisha Kill Road a lot, and I've known the meaning for about as long as I can remember... Anyway I just tossed this in here since I was typing this message as I heard it.)

Yeah, I noticed that the other day, and had pretty much the same thought. "Gee, I bet most people don't know that's Dutch for 'creek'."

That opens up a whole different can of irony, the whole concept of "Fresh Creek Landfill", but...

Going even further off topic, there was a brief movement by some ASPCA-types to rename the Fishkill to something else... Having gone to college in upstate NY, I was surrounded by rivers and streams named Postenkill, Thiskill or Thatkill, I thought it was both amusing and an incredible waste of time...

Ok, after a little sleep, some comments...

I couldn't help but have the odd image in my head of what Vlad would look like with the climate control field on through a FLIR. :)

'Jizz-fusion'? <snort> I don't know if I have a harder time with the phrase itself or the idea of Dorothy saying it.

I downloaded a copy of 'To Be Alive Again' after you posted the lyrics, which interested me enough to pick up Arrival a few days later, my mind has now permenantly associated 'We Will Meet Again' to the scene of Utena's toast to Anthy, specifically:

And if she were standing in a crowd
She'd be the one that I would find among the faces
And if the music was too loud
It'd be her voice that I would hear
Above it all (we will meet again)

It probably was helped that it had become my favorite song on the disc, and I've been playing it constantly since I picked it up, but it still fits to me.

Was curious if Dorothy has any interest in actually joining the IDS? It's not like she isn't more or less always there anyway, but is it something that she'd have any interest in, or is that a 'shut up and wait' kind of thing?

And semi-related:

Dorothy stood and considered the situation for a few moments.
She felt curiously uneasy, for some reason. She'd never been in any
danger; she was utterly immune to chemical intoxicants, after all, and
possessed enough strength to ruin entirely the day of any human who
tried to take anything from her by force. Nevertheless, she felt
almost... almost frightened. Not so much by the encounter itself, as
by the thought of what could have happened had she been someone else.
One of these others, the Torontonian girls, high schoolers and college
coeds, in their combat boots and bangles, laughing and joking.

Kaitlyn, at least, would have the sense not to drink anything
a guy like that handed her, and she could do a fair bit of remodeling
-herself- on anyone who tried it rough... but these other girls hadn't
been brought up by a master martial artist and an honorary Valkyrie.
They were so defenseless in a situation like that...

For varying reasons which haven't quite solidified in my head yet, I really liked this bit of insight inside Dorothy's head. Feels like the seeds of further purpose in her life, but I won't specualte beyond that. I also like how she handled the situation, though at this point I'm past trying to guess if it's going to turn around and bite her. I certainly hope not, but the drama decides...

"Th-th-thanks f-for c-c-c-coming," Kate said as she drove toward Boston.
"I-it's r-r-really k-k-kind of a b-b-b-bummer, b-being a-all al-l-lone in
P-P-Paris... "

And how. I wish her a far better time than the four days I spent there more or less alone, and await that tale with guarded anticipation. As always, a great read.

Hey, I didn't coin that one... the band in the cantina scene in Star Wars is, IIRC, described in the novelization as a jizz band. :)

>days later, my mind has now permenantly associated 'We Will Meet
>Again' to the scene of Utena's toast to Anthy,

Not a bad image, though to make it work as an in-story music cue, that scene would have had to be considerably longer, and contain a retrospective montage. :)

>It probably was helped that it had become my favorite song on the

Yeah... there are several songs on that album that have a spot someplace in the Symphony. The spot for "To Be Alive Again" hasn't come around yet, so the post of the lyrics was kind of a preview in itself. :) "Higher Place" appeared as incidental music in Wounded Rose, and will appear as incidental music again at least once, but it could also be a cue someplace. "World Gone Wild" is an image song for a place in the timeline I haven't reached yet. The rest of the album's too darn sappy to work with. :)

>Was curious if Dorothy has any interest in actually joining the IDS?

She can't - she can't get a weapons license because she's not a person.

A fellow Real Genius fan and you think I'd have a problem with a good 'gettin' it together' montage? :) And that's why I quoted the one chorus, because it was the one that really struck home with the moment. A clip to fit the space.

Upon first listening it struck me as the perfect end credit music to a good 80's teen buddy movie. I'm interested to see where it works in.

It's not Duel music, no. :)

Well, I'm assuming that that's going to take care of itself in one way or another. And the answer in another post about Dorothy's non-violence pretty much answers the rest of my question. At some point or another there's going to be an instance of Dorothy not having a proper authority at hand to deal with something. The mechanics of what it takes a person like that to cross that line is always an emotion packed moment of revelation, and it's one of the things I enjoy seeing build up, as stressful as it might be for the character. That she's now defined enough where I can maybe see a glimmer of that moment forming on the horizon is a very cool thing, I think.

The montages in Real Genius weren't flashbacks, at least. :) (You may have noticed that the Symphony does not lack for Real Genius-style montages; heck, there are two in Wounded Rose alone. :)

>>The rest of the album's too darn sappy to work with. :)

>It's not Duel music, no. :)

Scoring battle scenes is harder than it looks... though I could actually see "Higher Place" working for a friendly duel - or, rather, given the song's tone, a duel between people who are somewhat more than friends, perhaps.

Yes. Definitely something to consider...

Oh I crash
And burn inside my mind
It happens time and time again
I can't explain the way you make me feel
Oh I know
I don't have much to give
But what I have I give to you
With all the madness left inside of me...

>Well, I'm assuming that that's going to take care of itself in one way

Mm, not necessarily. Dueling isn't necessarily "violence" in the same sense that busting some guy's head because he wasn't keeping his hands to himself is. In fact, when some pairs of characters do it, it's more like a dance. The expressiveness might appeal to her, once she has her feet a little more firmly under that whole "emotional feedback" thing...

All I can say is, keep an eye on her and see where she goes. :)

No response, really, other than, while re-reading a few things the other night the following bit of twisted dialog popped into mind:

"C'mon, Kate, Miki invented a new virus and we're going to release it into Liza's room!"

It was probably due to everyone calling him 'Boy Genius' as of late. And lack of sleep on my part. :)

Sheesh, you might as well at least share with the rest of the class. I won't comment one way or the other, so you keep your image. :)

Well, if you're going to be like that... :)

The very first image that came to mind was Kaitlyn and Juri, either after the ice is cracked, so to speak, or, even more intriguing, as the specific event that starts as a friendly duel and ends as a more-than-friendly duel. Maybe the latter is a little Top Gun-ish, but then I have a soft spot for moments like that, so sue me. :) <edit> Just dawned on me that going into a duel would also place Kate in 'combat mode', thus clearing out the stutter that's still pretty strong with Juri, and significantly bolstering her confidence. Hmmmmm, interesting... </edit>

(And, given the title of the next Entr'acte, insert said duel into some out of the way yet picturesque Paris spot--one of the boardwalks down below street level on the Seine after dark would be nice and pretty and out of the way enough to not draw too much attention, especially later at night. Refer to Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You, specifically the dance between Woody and Goldie Hawn towards the end in a similar spot. If you can stand Woody Allen movies, anyway. :)

Then, tonight whilst driving about in a fit of insomnia, I saw it with Amanda and Devlin instead. The new dynamic in their relationship combined with the fact that a duel with Devlin might be as good as foreplay for our favorite Gamilon Princess would make it a good match. :) Now that I think about it, though, is Devlin a duelist? I'm blanking if it was even mentioned now. Haven't seen him with a melee weapon, and I certainly doubt the PPG counts. It was a thought, anyway.

There, I shared, and I feel better now.

Yeah, ok, I kind of figured that. Then again, I wasn't exactly thinking of a duel on the quad at noon, either. Heh. "Defend yourself, Earthman." Poor chap (yaright).

Now that Devlin has irrevocably, er, involved himself in the Gamilon royal family, I can't imagine that Amanda will allow him to go on not knowing one end of a sharp, pointy item (aside from herself; he knows his way around her pretty well :) from the other. But for right now, no, he hasn't the skills necessary to be a Duelist.

Umm, I never saw amanda as sharp and pointy. Devlin may be around her, but I would think that amanda is more firm and squishy in all the right spots...

One assumes the characterization of Amanda as 'sharp and pointy' is meant to describe her speech tones and her wit, and not any part of her physiology.

If it is, I'm certain that Devlin's got some very interesting marks that were just not described in the part where he ran around the palace in his underwear and coat....

Maybe. Of course, she also might wind up to flustered to be able to function. (Re: Now she knew how poor Corwin felt, a little lost in Cleveland.)
I kinda doubt that, but it may happen. (U: Oh common, you didn't even skip a beat when Juri's shirt came off. K:I still say she did that on purpose. U: What are you talking about, you're the one who slipped up and cut it off!)

She doesn't need a weapons license. IMHO, Dorothy could duel with her bare arms. And given that the object of the duel is to take the rose (rather than injure, or even knock over, one's opponent), most of her strength advantage is unused. Her keen reflexes would be offset by her limited reach.

That being said, I don't expect her to want to enter the IDS.

   Loverly!

We get to see a Duel between Utena and Kate... and more!

I love the way Dorothy handled the creep at the bar. Heck, somehow, physically disabusing him of his notions that he can treat women like that seems so... petty for Dot. Like Data (Who can be excused since he was, in fact, portrayed BY a person) She is much more human that many people I associate with everyday.

However, reading all of this has brought up several questions in general I feel compelled to ask.

#1) Kate and Utena wern't able to get their licences until 16. Corwin not only has a Drivers licence but a Spacecraft MASTERS licence! AT 13! Without illumination from our great Gweeping Gods, this seems like a plot hole large enough to drive a truck through... and gives Skuld one more good reason why Corwin should teach Utena on Tomodochi, rather than earth.... "YOUR INSTRUCTOR IS 13!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

#2) While you felt compelled to cut off the exposition, I was wondering just how it is Toronto DID become known as Hogtown.

#3) Ok, this one will probobly be answered in later chapters, but I for one am looking forward to future scenes between Utena and Dios... and I was surprised that el-creepo was Dios' body that didn't have the good sense to die. Kinda also explains why he was trying to all but rig the tourney, doesn't it?

Dorothy is very strong, and not bound by the First Law, but she doesn't like violence. She's not a pacifist or anything as elaborately-thought-out as that - it's not really a philosophy per se - but she doesn't enjoy the thought of resorting to force. And in that case, there was no need for it, since she was not in direct danger. SH3 doesn't work on her any more than any other biodrug would, and there was no way he was forcing her to go anywhere.

>#1) Kate and Utena wern't able to get their licences until 16.

Not so! Utena won't be 16 for another nine months, and Kaitlyn is still, as of the last day of Hogtown Rhapsody, four days shy of her sixteenth birthday.

>Corwin not only has a Drivers licence but a Spacecraft MASTERS
>licence! AT 13! Without illumination from our great Gweeping Gods,
>this seems like a plot hole large enough to drive a truck through...

Corwin tells Utena in Christmas Rose that a human can take the Zeta Cygni Republic's Master's Certificate examination as early as 13 if he can prove he's had and passed a course of instruction in spacecraft mechanics, piloting, astrogation and emergency management, or as early as 15 without said proof - but he also mentions that the test is brutal, and it is. He also mentions that most people don't bother trying it until after college, because it is so difficult, and it takes a long time and costs a bit of money to take. You can take it at his age, but not many humans are capable of passing.

Driving works similarly in Zeta Cygni. Kaitlyn could have taken her driver's license exam two years ago, if she felt like it, but she didn't. She didn't have much time to practice, and it didn't seem that important to her anyway, so she took her time about it. If she hadn't received the not-so-subtle nudge from her father in the form of a testing authorization sheet sent special messenger (one of Corwin's many functions :), she wouldn't have bothered in Question, either.

As for Utena, well, she's only lived here six months, and didn't know how to drive before Corwin and Uncle Keiichi taught her. When they'd finished with her education, she tested and passed without trouble, but before then, though she could have taken the test anytime she liked, she wouldn't have passed because she lacked the skills necessary.

>#2) While you felt compelled to cut off the exposition, I was
>wondering just how it is Toronto DID become known as Hogtown.

Dorothy was right - there's a lot of disagreement on that score. Some maintain that it's because Toronto used to be a major meatpacking center, like Canada's Chicago. Others claim it comes from the fact that Toronto was considered a no-fun sort of place in the late 19th century, with low standards of living and a lot of mud - a place only fit for hogs to live, so to speak. I think the former is more likely...

>#3) Ok, this one will probobly be answered in later chapters, but I
>for one am looking forward to future scenes between Utena and Dios...
>and I was surprised that el-creepo was Dios' body that didn't have the
>good sense to die. Kinda also explains why he was trying to all but
>rig the tourney, doesn't it?

"All but", heck, that's exactly what he was trying to do. That scene represents the first real outright spoiler for the not-available-in-English part of Revolutionary Girl Utena (unless you count Miki's description of Anthy's departure from Ohtori Academy, but that was somewhat more predictable), but I knew that was going to happen sooner or later and I'm not terribly worried about it. If people are that hung up that they don't want to know, I guess they can stop reading the Symphony until Software Sculptors catch up, if they ever do.

Anyway, plunging ahead with that spoileriffic line, that's exactly why Akio was trying to rig the Tournament - he wanted his old self back. Well, actually, he wanted his old self's power back; whether he actually wanted to go back to being a nice guy is open for debate, but I personally don't think so, and so that's the way it is in UF. He couldn't enter the Tournament himself, so he stocked it with people he figured would be easy patsies, then waited for one of them to win.

Fortunately, it didn't quite work out the way he figured it would.

Great part, and I was particularly happy with Utena and Saionji once again managing to turn being bored into marvelous dialogue. These two are such a Robert Holmes double act... if there's ever a series of murders at WPI requiring the abilities of a pair of wisecracking snoopy detectives, I vote for them. :-D

Heh. You know, this gives new meaning of the term "I would have gotten away with it if not for those darn kids!!"

However, I Disagree with the charecters selected to date. I know its over-budget, but clearly the whole IBGF/IDF would wind up being involved. And Vlad would NOT make a good Mystery Machine. That would be a Job for Moose's "van"... Which would probobly benifit from the psychodelic paint job more than Vlad would.
