CODE NAME: ULTRA

It would be simplistic - and frankly incorrect - to dismiss the
culture of Tomodachi as superficially faddish. Yes, the planet's been
known to harbor a fad or three; indeed, the good people of Tomodachi,
and especially of the world's capital, Nekomikoka, love nothing more
than a good flavor-of-the-week. The funny thing about the Tomodachijin,
though, is that unlike, say, the idol scouts and coolhunters of New
Japan, they tend to -hang onto- favorite trends long past what would, in
any other media-frenzied society, have been their sell-by dates.
Thus, while Tomodachi has as many bubblegum idols, inexplicably
fashionable garments, and Hot Toys of the Season as any other Earth
colony founded in the affluent 21st century, the best of them don't go
back out of fashion again. The result of all this is that, over the
years, Tomodachi has developed a heavily layered pop culture in which
the true favorites are beloved parts of the fabric of society - and, if
they're huge enough fast enough, they can get that way in the time it
takes a flash in the pan on New Japan to fizzle out and vanish
altogether.
Case in point: Ultraman Dash.
Had the silver-and-red giant with the glowing yellow eyes
appeared on New Japan, those in the know agreed, he would -never- have
been embraced by the public. New Japan was a world whose collective
psyche had been scarred forever by the Kaiju Wars of the 2200s, hugely
destructive corporate conflicts waged with building-sized bioengineered
monsters in the streets of Mega Tokyo and New Osaka. No giant creature
was ever likely to find favor with its citizens. At best, they would
have cursed Ultraman along with the monsters he fought as they retreated
to their shelters; at worst, their defense forces would have made a
target of him, just like any other unexplained creature.
On Tomodachi, on the other hand, he became a -sensation-.
Within weeks of his first appearance in the middle of April, the great,
the good, and the common, first in Nekomikoka, then all over the world,
drew the silver giant to their hearts and made him welcome:
By the end of May he was appearing on official Welcome to
Nekomikoka merchandise produced by the Nekomi Prefecture Chamber of
Commerce, as well as billboards throughout the city.
In early June the Nekomikoka Samurai of Major League Baseball's
Federated League adopted silver and red uniforms and announced that, for
the remainder of the 2410 season at least, they were to be addressed as
the Nekomikoka Ultramen. Moreover, each member of the team then adopted
a Brazilian-style "sports stage name" in keeping with the theme, from
catcher Ultraman Catch to base-stealing shortstop Ultraman Flash to star
pitcher Ultraman Rocket.
In the second week of June, toy stores were crammed with
children and adults alike, lining up to get their official Ultraman Dash
action figures.
On June 23, just as the fad would have been starting to ebb on
any other planet (apart from New Japan, where the consensus was that it
would never have begun in the first place), the Tomodachi Board of
Governors announced the selection of Ultraman Dash as the entire
planet's official mascot. The following Monday was declared Ultraman
Dash Day, a planetary holiday, with parades and fireworks.
By the first of July, the mighty Ultraman Dash could be found
adorning everything from lunchboxes to pencil cases, personal audio
players to coffee mugs, all over not just Tomodachi, but the whole of
the Greater Interstellar Co-Prosperity Sphere - including New Japan,
proving that the Neo-Japanese were happy to embrace a monster-fighting
giant hero so long as he was doing the fighting on someone else's
planet.

Not going to have this done before the server switch, I don't think, but it'll make a nice party favor for the housewarming...

Bah. See ya and raise ya, in memoiru of the late Issac Hayes:

Who's the smooth private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
Dash!
Ya damn right!

Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
Dash!
Can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
Dash!
Right On!

They say this cat Dash is a bad mother
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
I'm talkin' 'bout Dash.
THEN WE CAN DIG IT!

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
JOHN Dash!

Of COURSE you wernt
expecting it!
No One expects the
FANNISH INQUISITION!

This is also true.

Now that Tsuburaya's legal battle with those guys in Thailand is over with, I wonder if we'll see more of the Ultra series made available legitimately in R1. Right now all we've got is the original and Ultraman Tiga, though the Fushigi-Chan Subs guys have been doing such a good job on Ultraman Möbius that I have to admit I'd almost hate to see them pushed out by an official licensing of that particular title.

Still, it'd be nice to get some of the other recent series, like Max and Ultraseven X...

Hm. People in spadnex fighting people in rubber suits amongst miniature cardboard buildings is not a genre I have any familarity with, but as long as it's Eyrie, I'm confident I will be entertained.

I suggest pointing your web browser at http;//www.fushigichan.com/ and doing what you need to do to get some stuff from there.

Ultraman Moebius is billed as "The Production Celebrating Forty Years Of Ultraman", and it lives up to it. Gutsy humans fighting monsters with super-tech and courage? Check! Naive alien learning about life on Earth? Check! Guys in rubber suits fighting? Check! Interesting characters? Check! Obligatory cute-chick-way-more-interesting-than-hot-chick fu? CHECK!

Plus so far on the releases we've got the Ultraman Moebius and Ultra Brothers movie, with the human forms of Ultraman, Ultraseven, Ultraman Jack and Ultraman Ace are played by the original actors from the original series, and the most recent episodes released have Ultraman Taro. (Unfortunately, they could only get the original Taro's actor for an hour - enough for him to record Taro's lines, not enough to have him actually appear in the episode.)

If you want to get an idea of the Ultraman series, Moebius is a good place to start. You might miss some of the history of the series, but you catch on fast enough.

(Also, Mirai Hibino's actor is a former male idoru who turns out to be much funnier than he has any right to be.)

Though I have to say, as tokusatsu hot chicks go, Marina's actually more cute than hot in her own right. I mean, she has buck teeth. Adorable buck teeth. :)

I'll give you that. But Konomi's supposed to be the geeky girl chick, the one that Sigourney Weaver parodied in 'Galaxy Quest', and she has her own freaking Sim<i>Kaiju</i> to use. So that is amusing to me.

Aw, it's not Konomi's fault Miclas won't listen to anyone else. :)

When I read about them, I thought the Maquette Monsters would come off as utterly corny. And they do, but not in a bad way. And the concept spawned Lim Eleking, so...

Anyway. Back to the topic. I'm going to go start the proof sweep of Code Name: Ultra now.
